ERROR FIXED casio calculator pinout. Have you mixed up rs232 txd (should be pin 2) and rxd (pin 3) and casio tx and rx in this diagram? YES

THE CIRCUIT IS NOT WRONG. I HAVE JUST BUILT AND TESTED IT. IT WORKS FINE.
Pin 2 IS RXD on a 9-pin D-type serial connector (and pin 3 is TXD).
On a 25-pin connector however, they would be the other way round! YES
