While he has a right not to have his own children indoctrinated in what he believes are false and foolish teachings, he has no right to dictate what other children may be taught. -- Patrick J. Buchanan ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 23-41 Page 2 9 Oct 2006 ================================================================= EDITORIAL ================================================================= May I please remind everybody about the 70 char/line limit for all contributions. With only one line longer than that, the article will not compile. This is mainly a problem with contributions sent in as mail rather than as a file. I usually can reformat the paragraphs so the lines will stay within the 70 char/line limit, but not always. One example of when it's not easily done, is when the article contains quoted text like this week's article from Roy Witt. The only way I can solve this problem is (save from rejecting the article) to cut all lines after 70 char/line. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 23-41 Page 3 9 Oct 2006 ================================================================= REBUTTALS TO PREVIOUS ARTICLES ================================================================= The Hypocrisy of it All! Roy Witt <1:397/22> Last weeks letter to the children in Fidonet opens with a childish overview indicating to the reader that it must have been written with a misanthropical mindset. FR> An open letter from Bj”rn Forsstr”m 2:203/614.61 to everyone unde FR> the age of 15 and those of you who are older can stop read here s FR> you will never get it anyway. The Fidonews Editor says that my reply (this is the second, cleaned up version) to this letter cannot attack the author, yet the author of this letter has attacked Fidonet sysops, even though he hasn't named names but you know who he's talking about. I'll do the best I can to comply with the editor's wishes here, but ya'll will know to whom I'm addressing. FR> When you grow up I hope that Fido has since long gone been put to FR> sleep because I wouldn't want you to read about how so called adu FR> in the year 2006 are behaving towards each other like I will ment FR> below but with the present situation I don't think you have to be FR> much worried. Rabies is a lethal disease and it's spreading like FR> wildfire in here. The late comedian, Bill Hicks during his darker moments displayed this same type of misanthropy. He once called the human race "a virus with fuckin' shoes" and often referred to himself as a "misanthropic humanist." However, last week's open letter didn't reveal that kind of revelation from its author. Before you get any further into this rebuttal to the open letter, keep in mind that the 'open letter' of last weeks Fidonews doesn't display a whole lot of subtle expressions of misanthropy in pointing out the shortcomings of humanity. FR> It's free to call anyone you like for a thief without proving a FR> thing. The millionaire, Mr. Burns, and the crazed homicidal clown, Sideshow Bob, on the American comedic TV show, The Simpsons, are both snobbish misanthropes. FR> It's free to call anyone you like for a liar, also without provin FR> thing. Misanthropy has been ascribed to a number of writers of satire, such as William S. Gilbert ("I hate my fellow-man"), but such identifications must be closely scrutinized, because a critical or darkly humorous (Dark comedy) outlook toward humankind may be easily FIDONEWS 23-41 Page 4 9 Oct 2006 mistaken for genuine misanthropy. FR> It's free to have the worst man ever lived (Adolf Hitler) as your FR> Hero. Some people see the worst in everything. Jonathan Swift is widely accused of misanthropy (see A Tale of a Tub and, most especially, Book IV of Gulliver's Travels). However, Swift was also involved with many charitable organizations in Dublin, Ireland, including a hospital for the care of the mentally ill. FR> (I hope you are familiar whit the history, otherwise I can person FR> recommend a visit at Dachau or Bergen-Belsen in Germany or Stutth FR> in Poland). Hitler discovered a powerful talent for oratory. His hoarse, grating voice, for all the bombastic, humorless, histrionic content of his speeches, dominated audiences by dint of his tone of impassioned conviction and gift for self-dramatization. Something that most cannot say about their own talents. Not unlike that of some of Fidonet's *Cs, but on a bigger scale with far more followers than the most bombastic among Fidonet's leadership. FR> It's free to talk shit behind everyone's back and the more FR> patronizing you is the better. "Honor, loyalty, reverence, and fidelity - the highest and the holiest virtues of humanity - are but base commodities to be bought and sold." - Lago from Shakespeare's play, Othello. Guilty parties shouldn't be saying that others are worse than they are. While many people talk behind other's backs, a small group are upset that others dare to do the same about them. FR> Misunderstand everything and everyone, deliberately or not doesn' FR> matter. If one is to communicate in a non-native language, one should attempt to learn it as best they can. Foremost, they should refrain from assumptions so as not to make a fool of themselves. When in doubt, ask questions of a native speaker, you'll save a lot of shoe leather that way. FR> Do to others what you don't want them to do to you. Samuel Beckett once remarked that "Hell must be like... reminiscing about the good old days when we wished we were dead." - a statement that may, perhaps, be seen as rather bleak and hopeless, but not as anti-human or expressive of any hatred of humankind. Certainly unlike someone sitting on a park bench, imbibing the fruit of the vine and then posting misanthropical craziness to others out of his stupor. FR> Show all the disrespect you can towards everyone that doesn't agr FIDONEWS 23-41 Page 5 9 Oct 2006 FR> with you. "If you rage with your fire and I remain like the still waters, the most your flame can do is sizzle my steams to the heavens. As my rain pours down upon your fire, you will cease to exist!" - Russ T Okamura Good advice for those who're too dumb and to stubborn to understand the use of the English language. Learn the language and ask questions to really know what has been said. FR> Let someone else do the thinking for you, no matter if it makes s FR> or not. Thinking is a mental process, which allows human beings to model the world, and so to deal with it effectively according to their goals, plans, ends and desires. Words referring to similar concepts and processes in the English language include cognition, sentience, consciousness, idea, and imagination. FR> Pretend to be a peace-maker in a conflict until you have earned s FR> respect and then stab your opponent in the back. Certainly not a trait unknown to the casual reader. That tactic has been used by many down thru the ages ... Heh heh heh ... FR> The older you get the more childish you will be (sad but true). Can the reader imagine what's in the future, knowing what we have all learned from this? Hopefully everyone posting in Fidonet will be beyond this perceived pre-puberty stage before posting. But I imagine that there will still be a few who don't. Those who don't get it, haven't a clue, etc.. FR> When you leave the sandbox, be sure to bring some sand with you, FR> preferably full of dogs shit. It's much more fun to toss it then. The idea that one sand box is somehow typical of everyone else's is absurd. If you find dog shit on the your face, it wasn't necessarily thrown from someone else's sand box. FR> Set as many traps as you can. It' SO fun to watch people walk rig FR> into them, thinking you was serious. Serious has to slap some people in the face before they recognize it. OTH, most of us know when people are having fun, even if it is at their (your) expense. FR> Blame everyone else for your own shortcomings. Which is what this hypocritical 'open letter' is all about. FR> Accuse everyone else for everything you don't like and then do FR> exactly the same yourself. In one of his most famous works, Slaughterhouse Five, the protagonist Billy Pilgrim "becomes unstuck in time". He is taken hostage by the FIDONEWS 23-41 Page 6 9 Oct 2006 Tralfamadorians, a race able to see in "4D", who can travel through time and experience all the events in their lives, not necessarily in chronological order. Through the novel they teach him a fatalistic philosophy, summed up in the book's signature phrase, "so it goes". FR> Have an agenda but never agree to anyone that you have one. Some people believe they're mind readers. The antagonist Agent Smith from the movie The Matrix exhibits some of the same misanthropic tendencies in the film, when he refers to humans as "a virus, you are a plague" in the scene where he is trying to break Morpheus's mind. FR> Don't ever listen to anyone else, you might actually learn someth "I have an expression I use. It's not as good as "Shoot low - they're riding Shetlands", but I try and remember this all the time - you can use it yourself - like a mantra: "People suck"." - Frank Zappa FR> Claim to have a medical education and toss diagnoses around you a FR> you see fit without even having met the patient. Because mental events cannot directly be observed, computational models provide a tool for studying the functional organization of the mind. Such models give cognitive psychologists a way to study the "software" of mental processes independent of the "hardware" it runs on, be it the brain or a computer. Many of us know this instinctively, some have actually learned about it in our college psychology studies. Some remain ignorant of the computational skills commonly known by others, even the learned. FR> Disagree with everyone just because you can. It's really nice to FR> things up. In other words, don't be afraid of heated debate because you don't have the mental capacity to carry on an adult conversation, just play it by ear and everything will turn out just dandy; or you'll get pissed off, whichever occurs first. FR> Don't ever help anyone, even if his clothes have caught fire. Especially those sinners who deserve to be burned at the stake. It's ok to piss on their ashes though, so the fire doesn't spread any further. Logically, that's very simple to figure out but some post-adolescents need further instruction from the adults. FR> Don't worry if you break existing rules, those who sees you as th FR> Hero will back you up whatever you have done. Since there is no moderator and thus, no rules, what is this all about? FR> When you run out of arguments you are entitled to sink as low as FR> see fit to discredit your opponent. Some people are famous for digging holes they can jump into. One would FIDONEWS 23-41 Page 7 9 Oct 2006 think that they'd get tired of digging themselves out of the holes they've dug for themselves. Seems like they're not. FR> I could go on for hours but I think that you kids understand what FR> trying to say. The Hardcore Chicago band Arma Angelus has a song that could apply to this on their album "Where Sleeplessness is Rest from Nightmares". "Thanks for cutting it short, Lorraina." FR> If you all follow some or all of those rules you will become a pe FR> in FidoNet that's respected and the one that others will listen t FR> because they will look up to you as their Great Leader and they w FR> worship you for coming up with new abuses in every post. It also became known as The Hypocrisy of it All! ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 23-41 Page 8 9 Oct 2006 ================================================================= FIDONET BY INTERNET ================================================================= Fidonet Related Websites Thom LaCosta 1:261/1352 03/14/2005 One approach to tracking and viewing Fidonet related websites is to visit webrings that specialize in Fidonet. A webring is a method where sites having a common theme advertise other websites with simailar themes. The advantage to the webring concept is that in theory, the sites have an interest in maintaining an accuate listing and can modify their own listings on a site by site basis. It appears that there are two fidonet webrings....the long-running system at http://b.webring.com/hub?ring=fidonet and another at http://www.fidonet.us/fidoring/ The ring at webring.com is larger, but forces the viewer to look at google ads panels. The smaller ring at fidonet.us does not depend on adverstising revenue from ads. Sysops with Fidonet related websites should consider joining one or both rings. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's probably quite OK. No line may be longer than 70 characters. b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index, the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you may want to add some other address where you can be reached for personal comments. c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 22:00 UTC. Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file extension of the correct subject on the file name if known. Ideas for Subject areas: Subject File | Subject File ----------------------------------|---------------------------------- From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb Fidonet Regional News *.reg | Fidonet Net News *.net Retractions *.rtx | General Fidonet Articles *.art Guest Editorial *.gue | Fidonet Current Events *.cur Fidonet Interviews *.inv | Fidonet Software Reviews *.rev Fidonet Web Page Reviews *.web | Fidonet Notices *.not Getting Fidonet Technical *.ftc | Question Of The Week *.que Humor in a Fido Vein *.hfv | Comix in ASCII *.cmx Fidonet's Int. Put a .TXT on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews. If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I can not fix and I need your help on it. FIDONEWS 23-41 Page 19 9 Oct 2006 Send articles via e-mail or netmail, file attach or message to: Bj”rn Felten Fidonet 2:2/2 E-Mail bfelten @ telia dot com IMPORTANT! If you send the article via e-mail, make sure you put the word "fidonews" somewhere in the subject line! That way it will always pass the spam filter, ending up in the proper folder. Please include a message, telling me that you have sent an article. That way I will know to look for it. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 23-41 Page 20 9 Oct 2006 Credits, Legal Infomation, Availability + -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- FIDONEWS STAFF - -- -- -- -- -- -- -- + | | | Editor: Bj”rn Felten, 2:2/2 | | Columnists: Frank Vest - Frank's Column | | Thom LaCosta - Fidonet Related Websites | | Robert Couture - Fidonet Software Listing | | Daryl Stout - Telnet BBS Guide | | | + -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- + + -- -- -- -- -- -- -- - EDITORS EMERITI - -- -- -- -- -- -- -- + | | | Tom Jennings, Thom Henderson, Dale Lovell, Vince | | Perriello, Tim Pozar, Sylvia Maxwell, Donald Tees, | | Christopher Baker, Zorch Frezberg, Henk Wolsink, | | Doug Meyers, Warren D.
