Bob Satti, probably one of the greatest Fidonet profiles ever, passed away. Janis Kracht and Ward Dossche each wrote down some thoughts about this sad event. Ward also asked me to include a photo of Bob, and I will try -- even if I'm not sure I will manage to do so before the archive is sent away. Needless to say all other columns will be put on hold this week. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 23-21 Page 2 22 May 2006 ================================================================= GENERAL ARTICLES ================================================================= Bob Satti: A Great Man by Janis Kracht, 1:1/0 Former R17C, Z1C and IC Bob Satti passed away on Tuesday morning, May 16th, 2006, to the dismay of many many people. He was 49 years old and much to young to have left us. His start in the network was right there in the beginning with the great people of our hobby: =============================================== Bob, a programmer specializing in networking software, became interested in what was then called Remote or Host Systems in the mid 1970s. He found another hobbyist in Toronto with similar interests-after a lot of experimentation, they reached a milestone of sorts. According to Bob, "One day he typed an 'M' and I received an "H", and we each celebrated this success by going out for dinner". After getting the process a little more reliable, he went on-line on January 10th, 1977. "The phone company couldn't understand why I would want a second line in my house!" From Happy 20th to BC's Basicly BBC by Alan Zisman (c) 1997. First published in Computer Player, April 1997 =============================================== Bob was a special fellow, and we'll all miss him immensely. Those of us who were fortunate enough to work with him will never forget his love for our network and his dedication to Fidonet. As he first coined the now familiar phrase, "Noted", he let people know that he heard their concerns and cared about the situations that were important to SysOps in Fidonet. Bob worked above all else to make Fidonet a better place for all SysOps - it didn't matter what region, or what Zone - he wanted Fidonet to be place where people could work together and enjoy this hobby. People and SysOps were important to him. This was apparent in his desicion to work with some great people such as David Hallford and others when amassing ideas and plans for moving Fidonet towards using the Internet for the transfer of echomail and files. It was apparent when as Z1C, he righted wrongs brought before him. It was apparent in the positions he held as well - when he became IC of Fidonet, he realized that he wanted to give it his all and so he resigned as Z1C: FIDONEWS 23-21 Page 3 22 May 2006 ======================================= Originally posted in RGN17-Admin: Feb-27-2002 Hi Folks My third 2 year term as Z1C will be ending in the next few weeks. I have decided not to run for Z1C again, which will allow me to spend more time dealing with several matters that I would like to attend to as IC. Many folks, when they 'move on' in Fidonet, let loose with a barrage of sour grapes. I won't be doing that, as I have thoroughly enjoyed being Z1C for the past 6 years. With few exceptions, you folks are the greatest! And so we move on. I will stay on as Z1C until such time as the RC's decide on how a new ZC will be selected, and select one. If you would like to see this selection/election progress in a particular fashion, by all means take the matter up with your RC. Take Care Bob Satti ======================= Terribly saddened with his passing, the responses I've heard from people are unanimously full of respect and appreciation for Bob. Finally, a few of those responses that have been sent to me: This is indeed a shock. Though we met so very few of our peers we all became friends. The loss of a friend and one of FidoNet's leaders is a sad time. He was probably the best influence on Fidonet in his day. They simply don't make them like Bob any more and he'll be greatly missed. I too remember Bob as someone who was always there to help and support the network. Yes, we will miss Bob and feel his absence every day, but we are richer having known him. Janis Kracht Z1C FIDONEWS 23-21 Page 4 22 May 2006 ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 23-21 Page 5 22 May 2006 A monument has fallen down By Ward Dossche 2:292/854 Odd perhaps for some that I'm writing something on the occasion of Bob Satti's passing. Many will have adopted the belief that Bob and I were arch-enemies. This is not the truth. While it is perfectly correct that him and I did not share certain opinions on a number of subjects, it is little known that in private Bob and I shared a mutual respect for eachother which was expressed in a number of mails. Bob has been there always for as long as I can remember since I joined Fidonet somewhere in the 80-ies. Violent talks often went on about policy-documents in those days and when P4 made it in the Fidonet-headlines Bob was involved in the creative process that lead up to its adoption. Fidonet and P4 were Bob's pride and that was not always known to a large part of the community. Bob was human, such as we all are, with our strong points and our weaknesses and because of that he was not perfect the same way none of us are perfect. But he was a monument and the monument has now fallen down. There is no replacement. Other than the void left by people voluntary leaving Fidonet, the void left by him is of a different nature because he will be remembered. My wish is that where-ever he is now, they have WiFi so he can communicate in a zone of their own with some of the monuments which have fallen-down before him and who equally left a void ... Ron Dwight, Gordon Lewicky, Detlef Nick, Louis Van Geel, Doug Myers, Clay Tannacore ... The list becomes disturbingly long ... Included in this Fidonews is a photo of Bob: 'satti.gif', at least I've requested the editor about the possibility to include it. There are more around but it's the one I have on my site for some years now. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's probably quite OK. No line may be longer than 70 characters. b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index, the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you may want to add some other address where you can be reached for personal comments. c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 22:00 UTC. Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file extension of the correct subject on the file name if known. Put a .TXT on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews. If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I can not fix and I need your help on it.
