Frank has some thoughts about it in his article "Copy who!" and I do of course agree that anyone writing an article for the Snooze should do this using his or her very own words, so that there will never be any questions about who is the real author. One funny, well maybe not so funny after all, thing about copyright is the actual word. The right to make copies, and, in the end, the right to make money out of those copies? Is that all it boils down to? One would think that it should be more important who has the right to sign the painting, book or whatever. Anyhow, I think we should be glad, that the strict copyright laws we've been "blessed" with lately, as in the last half century or so, was not in effect before that, or human progress would surely not have been so great as it has -- in science as well as in culture. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 23-02 Page 3 9 Jan 2006 ================================================================= GENERAL ARTICLES ================================================================= Copy who! By Frank Vest With the battle over copyright and if the editor cars about copyright or not, here's a bit of my take. YMMV and all that stuff. Copyright is a funny thing. It varies in each county, nation more. With the Internet, there are even more battles over such it. For my part, I don't really care if Bjour... Bjuer... umm... where's my key?? :) "Ah ha! There's the little bugger." Gee, I hope I don't get slapped with a copyright violation from the Harry Potter movie. :) Umm.. oh yeah! I don't really care if Bj”rn has copyright stuff on his personal page or tattooed on his... um... anyway... What I do care about is that he is not allowing copyrighted material in the Fidonews where it could hurt Fidonet. I know that the argument is towards Bj”rn being ernest in his reasons, but is that really important? Maybe, but not as important as protecting the Fidonews. For me, I figure that one should write their own stuff. A quote is ok here and there, but don't get crazy with it and insert a whole bunch of quotes to make an article. Yes, there are people in Fidonet that would try that just to see if they can get around the editor. Sad that these people don't have a life. Someone should mail them one. And here I thought that I had run out of things to write about. :) Regards, Frank ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 23-02 Page 4 9 Jan 2006 How Do I keep Writing? By Frank Vest I wonder at times just how I keep writing articles for the Fidonews? If I were to look in the Fidonews echo for material, I would be rather disappointed... or I would end up writing mostly about the sad bigotry and hate between nations that I keep reading. If I looked in other echos, I would have nothing to write about or the subject of some software review. Not that software reviews are bad, mind you, but too much can lose its appeal. :) I guess that I try to find the good in things. In a negative statement, I look for the good. Yeah, that's hard to do, but if there is no good there, I move on. The ability of most FTN and echomail reading software to skip or "next key" to the next message is a big help. There are those subjects that are good or have a good part to them. When I was asked about what I had been doing while out of the Fidonews echo, I could have written a response in the echo. Instead, I wrote a short article for the Fidonews. That seemed the better thing to do. I took that article and, since it dealt with death, spun another article off of it. Kinda interesting how that works. :) Of course, death might not be considered a "good" thing, but is it any worse that the hate and other stuff in some of the echos? Some might see the "death" of Fidonet as a release to the "dog" that they grew up with. A rather positive thing in some ways of looking at it when one considers the state of Fidonet. Then again, I'm in no hurry for the "dog" to die. However, I am running out of things to write about. I suppose that I could write an article about my BBS. I wonder if that would be a good idea? The few Fidonet echos that I carry are sparse in their message count and the Users seem more interested in the games and other things than the Fidonet echos. Ah well. It is something to ponder. We shall see if I continue to write or not. Regards, Frank ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 23-02 Page 5 9 Jan 2006 Het Achterhuis By Bj”rn Felten, 2:203/208 Born on June 12, 1929, Anne Frank was a German-Jewish teenager who was forced to go into hiding during the Holocaust. She and her family, along with four others, spent 25 months during World War II in an annex of rooms above her father's office at Prinsengracht 263 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. After being betrayed to the Nazis, Anne, her family, and the others living with them, were arrested and deported to Nazi concentration camps. In March of 1945, nine months after she was arrested, and, so very shortly before the British liberated the camp in April 15, Anne Frank died of typhus at Bergen-Belsen. She was then fifteen years old. Her diary, saved during the war by one of the family's helpers, Miep Gies, was first published in 1947. Today, her diary has been translated into 67 languages and is one of the most widely read books in the world. Oh, and in case you wondered, the headline is the actual title of the book, not Anne Frank's Diary as most people probably think. If my Dutch isn't too rusty, it translates to something like "the back yard house". Even if Anne probably is one of the most famous persons that fell victim for a snitch during the Nazi regime, she surely was not the only one. Most likely, hundreds of thousands of those that were murdered in the Nazi KZs would never have been sent there if a handful of "helpers" had not snitched on them. Maybe this is one of the reasons people, at least in Europe, regard snitchers to be the lowest of the low lifeforms there is? One society that took snitching to the extreme, was the former DDR, where the Stasi terror was almost entirely based on snitching. I guess few people want to live in such a society, and yet millions of people were forced to, for almost half a century. Sure enough telling the authorities about something that eventually can prevent a serious crime, such as on-going child abuse, is perfectly OK, but snitching just for personal gain (greed, revenge, etc.) will forever be regarded as something that will put you on the same bandwagon to hell as the rest of the most disgusting people history has seen. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 23-02 Page 6 9 Jan 2006 ================================================================= FIDONET BY INTERNET ================================================================= Fidonet Related Websites Thom LaCosta 1:261/1352 03/14/2005 One approach to tracking and viewing Fidonet related websites is to visit webrings that specialize in Fidonet. A webring is a method where sites having a common theme advertise other websites with simailar themes. The advantage to the webring concept is that in theory, the sites have an interest in maintaining an accuate listing and can modify their own listings on a site by site basis. It appears that there are two fidonet webrings....the long-running system at http://b.webring.com/hub?ring=fidonet and another at http://www.fidonet.us/fidoring/ The ring at webring.com is larger, but forces the viewer to look at google ads panels. The smaller ring at fidonet.us does not depend on adverstising revenue from ads. Sysops with Fidonet related websites should consider joining one or both rings. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's probably quite OK. No line may be longer than 70 characters. b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index, the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you may want to add some other address where you can be reached for personal comments. c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC. Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file extension of the correct subject on the file name if known..
