Some of the features that make it one of the best are: Author Support: The author of Synchronet, Rob Swindell (known as Digital Man or DM) is active in the Fidonet "SYNC_SYSOPS" echo, DoveNet echos as well as the "alt.bbs.synchronet" newsgroup. You can also find him in the chat room(s) at "irc.thebbs.org". "Third Party" Support: Digital Man is not the only programmer that is working on the Synchronet project. Other programmers, Sysops in their own right, help with the programming. some of the Java Script modules and other facets of Synchronet are from these programmers. Easy Install: IMHO, one of the easiest installs of any BBS software. The latest public release, v3.00, and the current beta have full blown installers. Platforms: Win32 and *nix versions available. While OS/2 and Dos are not supported in the v3+ versions, the older v2.30 can still be used, and with the ability to share configuration files, one can offer dial-up along with telnet access. FTN support: Synchronet comes with its own FTN mail tosser, SBBSECHO, for handling Fidonet and other FTN mail. >> From the Synchronet Web Page (http://www.synchro.net): Version 3.10L Beta is now available for Win32 (sbbs310L.zip) and Unix-x86 (sbbsunix.tgz)! This is a beta release, but it does include a full-blown Win32 installer (no prior Synchronet installation is required). The Win32 installer can be used for a full installation or to upgrade an existing installation (of v2.3 or v3.x). The Unix installer can be used to build Synchronet from the v3.10L source code or the current CVS code snap-shot - thanks Deuce! Synchronet v3.10L now offers: * Numerous JavaScript Object Model improvements and fixes * Numerous SMTP Mail Server improvements and fixes - Including optional external mail processing (ctrl/mailproc.cfg) FIDONEWS 20-12 Page 3 24 Mar 2003 * Unix versions are of "release quality" with awesome installer * Includes IRC client (exec/irc.js) - thanks Deuce! * Requested SBBSecho improvements * ADDFILES improvements (mainly for adding CD-ROM directories) * Improved FTP server reliability and new features * New command-line utility (makeuser) to add a user to the user database - run makeuser -? for usage instructions Future plans are available at "http://rob.synchro.net/sbbstodo.html". Some of these have already been included in the v3.10L release. Future features that I'm looking forward to include: Full HTML Web server. Web interface for message areas. If you are interested in a BBS program, please check out Synchronet. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 20-12 Page 4 24 Mar 2003 ================================================================= OL'WDB'S COLUMN - WARREN BONNER ================================================================= Global Disasters wdbonner@pacbell.net First let me thank the several Fidonews readers who have emailed me in the last few weeks. I appreciate your letters and kind comments on the subjects my column has portrayed. Most amazing is, not one complaint! However that may change after this issue. Terrorism strikes all countries in the world where freedom and democracy exist. Terrorism is cowardly, and connives to demolish the lives of unsuspecting citizens in horrific and catastrophic ways. Makes them no difference, young or old, babies or adults, they strike usually without warning and claim proudly to be responsible by their God. Do not believe this claim, it is a lie. No God fearing religion on earth teaches such diabolically perverse deeds, much less rewards them with everlasting martyrdom. Our military are in the second year since the Terrorist Attack on 9-11, and are in the process of cleansing the second country of it's Terrorist. Their evil days of rule are over in Iraq as they were in Afghanistan. The soldiers are putting their lives once again on the line for us. I want you to close your eyes and picture in your mind the soldier at Valley Forge, as he holds his musket in his bloody hands, for the constitution our country is founded upon. He stands barefoot in the snow, starved from lack of food, wounded from months of battle and emotionally scarred from the eternity away from his family surrounded by nothing but death and carnage of war. He stands tough, with fire in his eyes and victory on his breath. He looks at France, now in anger and disgust and tells us this... I gave you freedom in world war 1 and again in world war 2. I helped rebuild your nation, not occupy it. I did the same for other countries too. How sad to see you willing for Iraq's people to be enslaved, for the profits to your banks. I fought in the snow and ice on every mountain in Europe, sometimes barefoot and frost-bitten to give you the freedom to vote and you stay at bay and try to sway the little countries against me. I left my family destitute to give you the freedom of speech and you remain silent or negative on critical issues, because it might be bad for business. I orphaned my children to give you a government to serve you and you have wasted it on the opportunities for your business contracts and banks. It's the soldier not the reporter who gives you the freedom of the FIDONEWS 20-12 Page 5 24 Mar 2003 press. It's the soldier not the poet who gives you the freedom of speech. It's the soldier not the campus organizer who allows you to demonstrate. It's the soldier who salutes the flag, serves the flag, whose coffin is draped with the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag!!! God be with us as our Soldiers and Marines continue to wipe out the terrorist regimes of the world. Terrorists that have basked in our freedom, used our lenient immigration laws illegally and stolen thousands of lives for a ignorant unjust cause. "Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. Amen." ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 20-12 Page 6 24 Mar 2003 ================================================================= COMIX IN ASCII ================================================================= More adventures of Fidodog _____________________________________________________________________ / | _______ | As we look in today | |My Hero| | ______________ |___ |________\ kiss | | __________ | |_ | (_____) / __ blush | | | Welcome | | | | | ( o o ) / \ / | | | to | | | | | ------------\ / /|OO \ | | | our BBS | | | | | /| \@/ (_| */_) | | |__________| | |_| | / | || ^ _`@/_ \ _ | |______________| |___| * ||---------|| | | \ \\ | ___|__________|___ |_|___ || || | (*) | \ )) | | XT ____ ____ | |____ | || || |__U__| / \// | |640K |----| |20MG|| |20MG|| ^^ ^^ _//|| _\ / | |__________________| |_____| (_/(_|(____/ | _________________________|___________________________________________| | \..The emporer has no clothes /| Please stay tuned | ...not vulgar in my country | as we pawse \ __ |\..has a way of pointing out.. /| for a station / \ | Who is in charge then? | break. /|-- \ |\..does anybody care anymore? /| (_| /_) | ..great article for the Snooze | _`@/_ \ _ |\Hypocrite! /| | | \ \\ | Two wrongs do not make a right | | (*) | \ )) |\..to anyone using those words? | |__U__| / \// | | _//|| _\ / | | (_/(_|(____/ | | ______________________________|______________________________________| _____________ |We tapped into | | |You all have| |OOPS! Little Jenny walked into the kitchen one day and looked up at her mother, who was busy cooking dinner. "Mommy, how old are you?" she asked. "Now dear," said her mother, "You should never ask a woman what her age is." "Why not?" demanded Jenny. "Because it isn't polite. You'll understand better when you grow up." Jenny thought about it for a moment, then piped up, "Mommy, how much do you weigh?" "Jenny," said her mother, "That's not a question you ask people." "Why not?" "Because it's not polite to ask grown-ups about how much they weigh. You'll understand some day." "Mommy," Jenny asked, "Why did you and Daddy get divorced?" "Darling," her mother replied with a sigh, "That's something that's still very painful for Mommy, and I really can't talk about it now. I'll explain when you are a little older." The next day, Jenny told a friend at school about the conversation with her mother. The other little girl explained to her, "All you have to do is get a look at your mom's driver's license. It has all the information about any grown-up you want on it." So little Jenny sneaked a peek in her mother's purse when she got home, and looked over her license, examining it carefully. That evening, she went back into the kitchen and announced, "I know how old you are, Mommy, You are 36!" Her mother looked down at her, surprised. "And I know how much you weigh!" said Jenny. "You weigh 135 pounds." "Jenny, where did you learn this?", her mother asked. Jenny just smiled and continued, "And, I know why you and Daddy got a divorce." Her mother just gasped and asked, "Why?" Jenny replied, "Because you got an F in sex!" <<<<<<<>>>>>>>> Face-lift A woman in her forties went to a plastic surgeon for a face-lift. The surgeon told her about a new procedure called "The Knob", where a small knob is placed on the back of a woman's head and can be turned to tighten up her skin to produce the effect of a brand new face lift. Of course, the woman wanted "The Knob." And over the course of the years, the woman tightened the knob, and the effects were wonderful -- the woman remained young looking and vibrant. FIDONEWS 20-12 Page 8 24 Mar 2003 After fifteen years, the woman returned to the surgeon with two problems. "All these years, everything has been working just fine. I've had to turn the knob many times and I've always loved the results. But now I've developed two annoy-ing problems: First, I have these terrible bags under my eyes and the knob won't get rid of them." The doctor looked at her closely and said, "Those aren't bags, those are your breasts." She thought a moment and replied, "Guess I need not ask about the goatee". <<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>> Cowboy Ventriloquist One day, a cowboy met an Indian riding along with a dog and a sheep and began a conversation. Cowboy: "Hey, cool dog you got there. Mind if I speak to him?" Indian: "Dog no talk." Cowboy: "Hey dog, how's it going?" Dog: "Doin' all right." Indian: Look of shock. Cowboy: "Is this Indian your owner?" pointing at the Indian. Dog: "Yep" Cowboy: " How does he treat you?" Dog: "Real good. He walks me twice a day, feeds me great food, and takes me to the lake once a week to play." Indian: Look of total disbelief. Cowboy: "Mind if I talk to your horse?" Indian: "Horse no talk." Cowboy: "Hey horse, how's it going?" Horse: " Cool." Indian: Extreme look of shock. Cowboy: "Is this your owner? " pointing at Indian Horse: "Yep" Cowboy: "How's he treat you?" Horse: "Good, thanks for asking. He rides me regularly, brushes me down often, and keeps me in a shed to protect me." Indian: Total look of utter amazement. Cowboy: "Mind if I talk to your sheep?" Indian: "Sheep liar." FIDONEWS 20-12 Page 9 24 Mar 2003 <<<<<<>>>>>> Ham sandwich A priest and a rabbi are sitting next to each other on an airplane. After a while the priest turns to the rabbi and asks, "Is it still a requirement of your faith that you not eat pork?" The rabbi responds, "Yes, that is still one of our beliefs." The priest then asks, "Have you ever eaten pork?" To which the rabbi replies, "Yes, on one occasion I did succumb to temptation and tasted a ham sandwich." The priest nodded in understanding and went on with his reading. A while later, the rabbi spoke up and asked the priest, "Father, is it still a requirement of your church that you remain celibate?" The priest replied, "Yes, that is still very much a part of our faith." The rabbi then asked him, "Father, have you ever fallen to the temptations of the flesh?" The priest replied, "Yes, rabbi, on one occasion I was weak and broke with my faith." The rabbi nodded understandingly. He was silent for about five minutes, and then he said, "Beats the hell out of a ham sandwich, doesn't it?" <<<<<<>>>>>>> Birth Pain Transfer Exchange A married couple went to the hospital to have their baby delivered. Upon their arrival, the doctor said he had invented a new machine that would transfer a portion of the mother's labor pain to the father. He asked if they were willing to try it out. They were both very much in favor of it. The doctor set the pain transfer to 10% for starters, explaining that even 10% was probably more pain than the father had ever experienced before. But as the labor progressed, the husband felt fine and asked the doctor to go ahead and kick it up a notch. The doctor then adjusted the machine to 20% pain transfer. The husband was still feeling fine. The doctor checked the husband's blood pressure and was amazed at how well he was doing. At this point they decided to try for 50%. The husband continued to feel quite well. Since the pain transfer was obviously helping out the wife considerably, the husband encouraged FIDONEWS 20-12 Page 10 24 Mar 2003 the doctor to transfer ALL the pain to him. The wife delivered a healthy baby with virtually no pain. She and her husband were ecstatic. When they got home, the mailman was dead on the porch. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 20-12 Page 11 24 Mar 2003 ================================================================= BEN RITCHEY'S FIDONET SOFTWARE LISTING ================================================================= -=:{ FIDONet Software Reference }:=- Type: M=Mailer T=Tosser B=BBS D=Door C=Comm/Terminal P=Points E=Editor I=Internet U=Utility ?=Info .- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -. |Software: Author |Type |URL, Contact, Ver, Notes Help Node| `- - - - - - - - - - -+- - -+- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -' Argus |M |http://www.ritlabs.com/argus/ 2:469/84 | | argus@ritlabs.com Tel: 373-2-246889 | | v3.210 on Mar 20th 2001 BeeMail: |M |http://beemail.gexonline.net 1:105/10 Stephen Proffit | | beemail@gexonline.net BinkleyTerm XE |M |http://btxe.sourceforge.net 1:1/102 | | v2.60XE/Gamma-6 on Nov 11th 1998 BinkD |MI |http://2f.ru/binkd/ | | maloff@corbina.net | | v0.94 on Jul 24th 2000 Fidonet to Internet: |MI |http://www.terminate.com Bo Bendtsen | | sales@terminate.com | | v2.00 on Mar23rd 1997 FrontDoor, FD/APX: |MTPC |http://www.defsol.se 2:201/330 Definite Solutions | | sales@defsol.se 1:1/101 | | v2.26SW & v2.33ml FD, v1.15 APX Husky Project |MTPUI|http://husky.sf.net | | v1.4b2 on Feb 25th 2003 InterMail, InterEcho,|MT |http://www.ifido.com 1:1/133 Allfix | | sales@ifido.com | | v2.50 IM, v1.19 IE, v5.13 AF Radius (based on |M |http://fido5012.narod.ru/ 2:5012/38 Argus) | | fido5012@zaural.net Tel: 7-3522-469463 | | v4.009 on Jan 2nd 2003 Terminate |MBP |http://www.terminate.com | | v5.00 on Aug 7th 1997 Tmail |MI |http://www.tmail.spb.ru v2608 WildCat! If you could type it on your keyboard, it's probably quite OK... b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index, the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you may want to add some other address where you can be reached for personal comments. c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC. Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file extension of the correct subject on the file name if known.. Ideas for Subject areas: Subject File | Subject File ----------------------------------|---------------------------------- From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb Fidonet Regional News *.reg | Fidonet Net News *.net Retractions *.rtx | General Fidonet Articles *.art Guest Editorial *.gue | Fidonet Current Events *.cur Fidonet Interviews *.inv | Fidonet Software Reviews *.rev Fidonet Web Page Reviews *.web | Fidonet Notices *.not Getting Fidonet Technical *.ftc | Question Of The Week *.que Humor in a Fido Vein *.hfv | Comix in ASCII *.cmx Fidonet's Int. Put a .TXT on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews. If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I can not fix and I need your help on it.
