This month looks at several Christmas related Shareware programs, along with some other features which might be of interest to new BBS users. Since this issue was released a little later than usual, some may have thought that the run of the Pasco BBS Magazine was over. On the contrary, the well has not yet run dry and the magazine will be around for quite awhile. This month's issue was delayed waiting for an interview which never came to fruition. I would have to admit that luck had been with us up to this point. Some lessons were learned and I will try not be put the magazine in that position again. This would also be a good time to remind everybody that the magazine would love to print more articles from other sources, so why not write something and send it along. After all, your story would be read all over the world! I want to take a moment to wish everybody who is reading this a very happy holiday season and all the best for 1994. Next month will the First Anniversary Issue of the Pasco BBS Magazine, and it will be a time to thank those who have made the continuation of this publication possible. It will be fun to reflect on what has been an amazing year. But, for now thank you, and have a great holiday! + + + + + ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿ ³ ³ ³ Pasco BBS Magazine Distribution Sites ³ ³ ------------------------------------- ³ ³ United States ³ ³ ³ ³ Florida West Pasco Board of Trade BBS (813) 862-4772 ³ ³ Clearwater Pegboard BBS (813) 596-7148 ³ ³ Largo Birdland BBS (813) 595-9239 ³ ³ Lutz Night City South (813) 949-5751 ³ ³ St. Petersburg Twilight BBS (813) 323-6023 ³ ³ Tampa InnerZone BBS (813) 238-0707 ³ ³ Valparaiso Phoenix BBS (904) 651-4423 ³ ³ West Palm Beach ArrowHead BBS (407) 833-0878 ³ ³ Zephyrhills Tele Com BBS (813) 780-8452 ³ ³ ³ ³ Alabama Daleville Galaxy BBS (205) 598-9509 ³ ³ ³ ³ California Mira Loma ATTENTION to Details (909) 681-6221 ³ ³ ³ ³ Illinois Mundelein Mulligan's Place BBS (708) 566-6183 ³ ³ Shiller Park The Last Shekel BBS (708) 671-9263 ³ ³ ³ ³ Indiana South Bend The Great Beyond BBS (219) 233-8854 ³ ³ ³ ³ Massachusetts Clinton Software Creations (508) 365-2359 ³ ³ ³ ³ New York Cortlandt Manor The Laser BBS (914) 734-7045 ³ ³ ³ ³ North Carolina Morehead City SeaScape BBS (919) 726-9364 ³ ³ ³ ³ West Virginia Snowshoe Snowshoe BBS (304) 572-2531 ³ ³ ³ ³ Canada ³ ³ ³ ³ Ontario Oshawa Odyssey Systems (905) 579-9241 ³ ³ ³ ³ United Kingdom ³ ³ ³ ³ Northamptonshire Raunds Xenakis BBS +44 933 460744 ³ ³ ³ ÃÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ´ ³ SYSOPS: Read PBMDIST.INF to sign up! ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ + + + + + Jetpack Christmas Special ------------------------- Adam Pedersen and Software Creations have released a Christmas version of the popular Shareware game Jetpack. This holiday variation of the original is called the Jetpack Christmas Special. This time you are Santa Claus flying around collecting all the gifts in ten new challenging levels. In the first level you start out as a Rookie Santa, and the levels get tougher including a challenging level called Total Wormage. Jetpack Christmas Special is a fast action game that is not so simple to solve. You fly around each level collecting Christmas presents and other treasures, while avoiding the monsters. Once you collect all the presents you can move on to the next level. The treasures include the Christmas gifts, gold coins, piles of gold, golden vases and you might even find an extra Santa. In addition to fuel tanks for your jetpack (a model L1069-E according to the documentation), there are also Stunners and Shields. The Stunner will freeze all monsters in place temporarily and the Shield will make you immune to all the hazards, and both may allow for a quick exit to the next level. There are a wide variety of monsters to watch out for while playing the game. The most common foe is the Trackbot who will track you down constantly. There is the Steel Ball which crushes everything in it's path. The Spring bounces up and down. The fastest enemy is the Missile which flies around in a set pattern. Spikes bounce in a diagonal path of destruction, the Flitzer moves about randomly and the Batbot uses radar to hunt you down. Then there is the Homer, which will travel through bricks to head straight at you. There are also some teleporters, button activated barriers, moving platforms and icy bricks to make things more interesting. Jetpack Christmas Special, like the original, comes with a built in level editor, but with this editor you can create levels with a Christmas theme. Jetpack Christmas Special is a free release from Software Creations. The game features colorful graphics and sound card support. For more on Jetpack and Adam Pedersen see the June issue of the Pasco BBS Magazine. Adam Pedersen, a Florida based Shareware author, was interviewed for an article on the original version of Jetpack. + + + + + °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°° ² ² ² Board of Trade BBS New Port Richey, Florida ² ² ² ² Home of the Pasco BBS Magazine ² ² ² ² Home of Shadoware ² ² ² ² Bytor Computer Systems, Inc. presents the PC Help Forum ² ² ² ² (813) 862-4772 12/24/48/96/14400 baud ² ² ² ² Member of... ² ² Electronic Frontiers Foundation and American BBS Association ² ² Official Distribution Site for the following: Alive Software, ² ² Apogee Software, Digital Reality, Epic MegaGames, Gamer's Edge, ² ² MVP Software, Software Creations and Westcoast 813 BBS Directory ² ² BBS Voice Line (813) 863-5886 ² °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°° + + + + + S H A R E W A R E R E V I E W ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÂÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿ ³ Program ³ Humbug ³ ÃÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÅÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ´ ³ Author/Vendor ³ Graham Cluley ³ ÃÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÅÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ´ ³ Special Requirements ³ None ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÁÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ Humbug Review ------------- Graham Cluley's Humbug is a text based adventure game which features many user friendly features. The game is quite enjoyable and interjects considerable humor into the holiday season. You have been sent to spend Christmas with your rather eccentric grandfather at what has traditionally been boring old Attervist Manor. The story line is that old Grandad is having some financial problems and his neighbor Jasper Slake is trying to buy Attervist Manor. Grandad considers himself to be quite the inventor, and is more than a little strange. For starters, he idolizes Napoleon Bonaparte and dresses just like him. You will come across several bizarre robots during your adventure which Grandad has put together with odds and ends laying around the house. There is a time machine in the basement which will take you back to the Attervist Manor in Victorian times, where you may ultimately solve this adventure. There is a configuration option to set the game colors, and a hint command which might get you out of a tough spot. If you enjoy text based adventure games, Graham Cluley's Humbug should be under your tree. + + + + + Over 10 GIGS ÜßÜ Node #1: (205)-598-9509³Main Board Online NOW !Üß ßÜ Node #2: (205)-598-9561³SysOps: Mike Howe No PRIVATEÜß ßÜ Node #3: (205)-598-9568³ David Basile Nodes, Üß ßÜ Fax # : (205)-598-6547³ Lamar Saxon ALL Û Û All nodes USR DS ³ Amiga Conference FREE !Üß ßÜ Courier HSTs ³ SysOp: Perry Martindale Üß ÜÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÜ ßÜ ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÁÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Û ÛÛÛÛß ßßß Û Û ÛÛÛÛ ÜÜÜÜ Û ÜÛÛÛÛÛÜ ÛÛ ÜÛÛÛÛÛÜ ÛÛÜ ÜÛÛ ÛÛ ÛÛ Üß ÛÛÛÛ ßßÛÛÛ ßÜ ÛÛÜÜÜÛÛ ÛÛ ÛÛÜÜÜÛÛ ßÛÛÛß ÛÛÜ ÜÛÛ Û ÛÛÛÛÛÜÜÜÛÛÛ Û ÛÛßßßÛÛ ÛÛ ÛÛßßßÛÛ ÜÛÛÛÜ ßÛÛÛß Üß ßÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛß ßÜ ÛÛ ÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛ ÛÛ ÛÛß ßÛÛ ÞÛÝ Û Û Üß ÜÜÜßßßÜ ßÜ ÛÛÛÛÛÛÜ ÛÛÛÛÛÛÜ ÜÛÛÛÛÛÜ ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ» Û ÜÜßß ßÜ Û ÛÛÜÜÜÛß ÛÛÜÜÜÛß ÛÛÜÜÜÜ º FIDO Node: º Û ÜÜßß ßÜ Û ÛÛßßßÛÛ ÛÛßßßÛÛ ßßßßÛÛ º 1:18/9 º Û Üßß ßÜ Û ÛÛÛÛÛÛß ÛÛÛÛÛÛß ßÛÛÛÛÛß ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍͼ Û Üßß ßÜÛ The Completely Free BBS ! Your goal is to stop the trolls, whose sole purpose in life seems to be to annoy elves. This is a run, jump and shoot arcade game with very nice graphics and sound card support. The levels do get progressively more difficult. In the first level you can talk to the other elves for clues and the main thing to watch out for are the pesky birds. The second level offers brand new enemies, including springs which chase you around incisively. There is a dark cave where you will have to be extra careful, this challenging darkness is also found in various areas of Gorgimer's Castle as well. There are also water hazards to avoid by jumping on the back of a turtle, but you may want to jump into the water just to hear the great sound effects your drowning elf will make. When you get to the castle itself you will have to bribe the human guard to get in, and soon you will meet Gorgimer himself. If you can find his cousin Mortimer's suit of armor in the dreary dark dungeon he will help you out. If you find all the right items you may soon find yourself flying out of the dungeon in a hot air balloon. What does all of this have to do with Christmas? Very little, except that this may be the only time of year when you want to be an elf. This is an enjoyable game for all ages. Gorgimer's Castle is the first volume of Elfland and has been released as Shareware. The second volume is called The Troll Caves. + + + + + ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ» º ÚÄÂÂÄ¿ Ú¿ ¿ ÚÂÄÄ¿ Ú¿ ÚÂÄÄ¿ ÚÂÄÄ¿ ÚÂÄÄ¿ ÚÂÄÄ¿ º º ô ÃÅÄÄ´ ÃÅÄ Ã´ ÃÅÄÄ´ ÀÁÄ¿ ÃÅÄ ÃÅÄÂÙ º º ÀÙ ÀÙ Ù ÀÁÄÄÙ ÀÁÄÄÙ ÀÙ Ù ÀÄÄÁÙ ÀÁÄÄÙ ÀÙ À º º ÚÂÄ¿ ÚÂÄ¿ ÚÂÄÄ¿ º º ÃÅÄÁ¿ ÃÅÄÁ¿ ÀÁÄ¿ º º ÀÁÄÄÙ ÀÁÄÄÙ ÀÄÄÁÙ º º º º SysOp: Spock - 1200 - 16800 Bauds º º º º Cortlandt Manor, NY USA - Running Renegade º º º º 4 Nodes - 3 Gigs - 1 Gig of Adult - Free! º º º º (914) 734-7045 Node 1 USR 16.8k DS º º (914) 734-7155 Node 2 USR 14.4 º ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍͼ CALL NOW - CALL NOW - CALL NOW - CALL NOW - CALL NOW - CALL NOW + + + + + B O O K R E V I E W ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÂÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿ ³ Title ³ SysLaw ³ ÃÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÅÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ´ ³ Authors ³ Lance Rose and Jonathan Wallace³ ÃÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÅÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ´ ³ Publisher ³ LOL Productions ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÁÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ SysLaw Review ------------- When Lance Rose and Jonathan Wallace wrote the first edition of SysLaw back in 1988, it was probably the first book devoted entirely to BBS related legal issues. The book is now in it's second edition, released in 1992, and much has happened since the first edition. There have been several highly publicized legal actions and there is a growing body of case law related to bulletin boards. SysLaw gives system operators some very good information on how the law may relate to bulletin boards, and what has happened to bring us to this point. The first chapter covers "Your Rights As A Sysop" and you might be surprised how much protection the First Amendment to the Constitution provides. The book also suggests having a Caller Contact which your users must agree to prior to having access, and gives an example of how to create one. There is a chapter dealing primarily with copyright laws called "Who Owns the Information on Your BBS?" The book goes on to discuss Injurious Materials and Activities, Privacy, Crime and the BBS, Searches and Seizures, Viruses and Adult Materials. A full one third of the book are the appendixes featuring the text of several different laws, statues and acts pertaining to the on-line world. Included are the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and the Privacy Protection Act. For the most part the book is easy reading, not written so only lawyers can understand it. The most enjoyable selections are the actual cases, the test cases which are laying the groundwork for the future. The book is interesting and is a good source of information for Sysops. As rapidly as things have been happening lately, I hope the book is updated more frequently. + + + + + ÜÛÛÜ ÜÛÛÜ ÜÛÛÜ ÜÜÛÛÛÛÜÜÛ ÜÛÛÜ ÜÛÛÜ ÜÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÜ ÛÛÛÛÛÛÜ ÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛÛ ÜÛÛÛÛßßßßÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛ ßßßÛÛÛÛÛßßß ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ ÜÜÜÜ ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ ßßÛÛÛÜ ÛÛÛÛÛßßßÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛ ßÛÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛÛ ßÛÛÛÛÜÜÜÜÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛ ßÛÛß ßÛÛß ßÛÛß ßßÛÛÛÛÛÛß ßÛÛß ßÛÛß ßÛÛß ÜÜÛÛÛÛÜÜÛ ÜÛÛÜ ÜÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÜ ÛÛÛ ÜÛÛÛ ÜÛÛÛÛßßßßÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛÛ ßßßÛÛÛÛÛßßß ÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ ß ÛÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛ ßÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ Ü ÛÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛÛ ßÛÛÛÛÜÜÜÜÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛ ßßÛÛÛÛßß ßÛÛß ßÛÛß ÛÛÛÛÛÛ ÜÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÜ ÜÜÛÛÛÛÜÜ ÜÛÛÜ ÜÛÛÜ ÜÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÜ ÜÛÛÜ ÜÛÛÜ ÛÛÛÛÛÜ ßÛÛÛ ÜÛÛÛÛßßßÛÛÛÜ ÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛ ßßßÛÛÛÛÛßßß ÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÜÜ ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ ßßßÛÛÛÛÛÜ ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛÜ ÜÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛßßßÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÜÜÜÛÛÛÛÛ ßÛÛÛÛÜÜÜÛÛÛß ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛ ßÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛß ßßÛÛÛÛßß ßÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛß ßÛÛß ßÛÛß ßÛÛß A TRIBBS SYSTEM-2400 BAUD RATE-24 HOURS-40 DOOR GAMES-ADULT SUBBOARD LOCATED IN BEAUTIFUL DOWNTOWN LUTZ,FL. If you are a fan of text based adventure games, Elf's Christmas Adventure is right in season. The game has all the most advanced features available in modern adventure games. There are the typical commands like help, inventory and look, along with helpful commands such as list exits and oops, which allows the editing of commands. There are ALT key functions to speed up movement commands, and the option to change certain "look-and-feel" options of the game itself. The premise of the game is that you are a retired elf who is called back into service when the North Pole is fogged in. The documentation explains "Christmas has run amuck and you must call on all your years of wisdom and the recollections of your youth to set it right." If you have problems solving the adventure a solution is available directly from the author for just $1. Elf's Christmas Adventure, or God Bless Frosty the Snowman, was written by Bruce MacKay and Marlene Abriel, and adapted for the Adventure Game Toolkit by David Malmberg. + + + + + ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ» º OFFICIAL DISTRIBUTION CENTER OF WESTCOAST 813 BBS LISTING FOR PINELLAS º º º º º º SysOp: MIKE MURRAY FILEBONE-WILDCAT! Some great programs have already been released over the last few months, Bio Menace, Monster Bash, Halloween Harry and Blake Stone, to name a few. What do the people who gave us Wolfenstein 3D have planned for the near future? Scheduled for release this December are Duke Nukem II and Raptor. Duke Nukem II, created by Todd Replogle and Allen Blum, is the long anticipated sequel to the highly successful Duke Nukem. This time Duke Nukem is abducted by aliens and battles the evil Rigelatins. The game features great VGA graphics, AdLib music and digitized sound effects. There are also new Super Boss enemies to do battle with. In the Shareware game Raptor you are a fighter pilot for the Mega-Corps with a wide array of weapons at your disposal. Raptor has 256 color graphics and cinematic sequences, along with sound card support. Apogee also released the names of three games scheduled to hit the Shareware market during the "second quarter" of 1994, which would make for a Spring release date. Hocus Pocus is high school drop-out who tries to rescue the princess Angela from the evil wizard Megameanie. In Megaloman you play the game's namesake, who is also known as the "Janitor of Justice," in a battle with the sinister crime bosses. In Realms of Chaos you try to save Mysteria from the current rein of terror. All games feature VGA graphics and sound card support. Apogee Software is a very popular Shareware game distributor with over 20 published titles on the market. They currently have 18 new projects under development, so 1994 should be another active year for Apogee Software. + + + + + ÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜ ßÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜß °±°°±²Û²±² ÀÄAÄPillarÄInÄTheÄModemingÄCommunityÄÙ °±°°±²Û²±² °±°°±²Û²±² ÄÄÄÄÄÍÍ Welcome To ÍÍÄÄÄÄÄ °±°°±²Û²±² °±°°±²Û²±² °±°±²ÛÝ°±°±²Ý °±Ý ²ÛÝ°±°±²ÛÝ°±°±²ÛÝ°±°±²Ý°±Ý ²ÛÝ °±°°±²Û²±² °±°°±²Û²±² °±Ý ²ÛÝ°±Ý ²ÛÝ°±Ý ²ÛÝ°±Ý °±Ý °±Ý °±Ý ²ÛÝ °±°°±²Û²±² °±°°±²Û²±² °±Ý ²ÛÝ°±Ý ²ÛÝ°±°±²ÛÝ°±°±²ÛÝ°±°±²ÛÝ°±°Ý °±°±²ÛÝ °±°°±²Û²±² °±°°±²Û²±² °±Ý ²ÛÝ°±Ý ²ÛÝ °±Ý ²ÛÝ ²ÛÝ°±Ý °±Ý °±°°±²Û²±² °±°°±²Û²±² °±°±²ÛÝ°±°±²Ý °±Ý °±°±²ÛÝ°±°±²Ûݱ±°±²Ý °±Ý °±°°±²Û²±² °±°°±²Û²±² ÜÜÜ Ü Ü ÜÜÜ ÜÜÜÜÜ ÜÜÜ ÜÜÜÜÜ ÜÜÜ °±°°±²Û²±² °±°°±²Û²±² ÛÜÜ ÛÜÛ ÛÜÜ Û ÛÜ Û Û Û ÛÜÜ °±°°±²Û²±² °±°°±²Û²±² Û Û Û Û Û Û Û Û °±°°±²Û²±² °±°°±²Û²±² ßßß ß ßßß ß ßßß ß ß ßßß °±°°±²Û²±² °±°°±²Û²±² Sysop: Chuck Corvec Co Sysop: Dan Twomey °±°°±²Û²±² ÜßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßÜ Line 1 579-3710 USR 14.4 HST Line 5 579-2921 BOCA 14.4 V32b Line 2 579-9241 USR 14.4 DS Line 6 579-2012 BOCA 14.4 V32b Line 3 579-9983 BOCA 14.4 V32b Line 7 579-3036 ZOLTRIX 14.4 V32b Line 4 579-0171 BOCA 14.4 V32b Line 8 579-3966 ZOLTRIX 14.4 V32b + + + + + Editorial --------- Do Not Corrupt Files When some hear corrupted file they immediately think of viruses, but there is a much subtler form of corruption which goes on all the time. Corruption of files should be defined as altering the file in any way, as a file should be distributed as it was originally created by its owner. Some Sysops routinely alter archive files with the insertion of BBS ad files, or the re-zipping of files so they can add their own "authentic files verified by," and then their BBS name and number. A zip file does allow for a comment upon un-zipping, and this is the only place a Sysop should place an ad. Some people still advocate file corruption as a "Guerilla Marketing" technique, a way to advertise a BBS at no cost. The problem is that these practices are not only confusing to new users, but there is a moral issue to be considered. Maybe a new user will think that the Sysop who corrupted the file is the home board and that could cause problems. What right does someone have to alter what someone else has created and graciously allowed to be distributed electronically? The practice of inserting ads has become so wide spread that Shareware authors now mention BBS ads in their vendor documentation, and reluctantly do allow their use. To those who say "I am letting them use my BBS for the distribution of their software," I say it is the other way around. The re-zipping of files is a far more severe form of file corruption, especially if removing the original AV and replacing with another BBS's information. Nobody has the right to verify the authenticity of a file, other than the person who created that file. In addition this leads to changing file names and more confusion. None of these types of activities, despite being quite common, help the BBS community. The Pasco BBS Magazine wants your opinion, and welcomes opposing viewpoints. Send along your opinions on any BBS related issue. + + + + + ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ» º ÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜ ÜÜÜ º º ßßßßßÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ º º ßßÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛßß ßÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ º º ßßßß ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ º º ßÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ º º ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÝ º º Ò Ò ÖÄÄ· ÖÄ· ÖÄÒÄ· ÖÄÄ· ÖÄÄ· ÖÄÄ· ÖÄ· ÖÄÒÄ· º º ºÖ·º ÇÄ ÓÄÄ· º º º º ÇÄĶ ÓÄÄ· º º º Ó½Ó½ ÓÄĽ ÓÄĽ Ð ÓÄĽ ÓÄĽ Ð Ð ÓÄĽ Ð º º Ö· · ÖÄÄ· ÖÄ¿ ÖÄ¿ ÖÄ· ßßßßÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ º º ÖÐз º Ķ ÇÄÁ¿ ÇÄÁ¿ ÓÄÄ· ÞÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÝ º º ÓÄĽ Ð ÓÄĽ ÓÄÄÙ ÓÄÄÙ ÓÄĽ ÞÛÛßÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ º º ÒÄÄ¿ Ò ÖÄÄ¿ ÖÄÄ· ÖÄÄ· ÖÄÒÄ· ÖÄÄ· ÖÄÄ¿Ò Âß ÜÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ º º º ³ º ÇÄÂÙ ÇÄ º º º º ÇÄÂÙÓÄÒÄÙ ÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÝ º º ÐÄÄÙ Ð Ð Á ÓÄĽ ÓÄĽ Ð ÓÄĽ Ð Á Ð ÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛßßÛÛÛÛÝ º º ßÛ ÛÛÛÜ ÜÛÛÛÛÛ º º Editor: CLARK D. It is hoped this feature will be helpful to new users, and it is interesting to note the similarities and differences between the major vendors. Since the software is becoming extremely versatile the Sysop may change some command structure, so it is conceivable that commands can be different on boards by the same manufacturers. Most of today's packages also have features like hot keys or the stringing together of commands. What will be run each month is the commonly found commands A to Z, and maybe it will help some new users. When callers get familiar with the BBS itself, they will learn all of the nuances. This month we look at PCBoard, created by Clark Development Company, Murray, Utah. This article was written over a year ago, but new users will continue to ask questions on high speed file transfers. Line noise over common telephone wires has been a problem since the first modems made their connection. For years it was believed that 2400 bps was as fast as normal telephone lines could transmit data, and that we would never see faster speeds due to the low band-width and high noise levels. Modem technology has advanced over the years, but line noise is not a thing of the past. Unfortunately, it is still with us. These new modems are not magic either. They do manage to hide the line noise, and some are able to filter it out, but it is still there. If line noise occurs during the connection process, where your modem and the host modem perform their hand-shaking sequence looking for common ground, then it is very likely that the two modems will agree to a slower speed to avoid having problems during the remainder of the call. In fact, if line noise occurs during the call the modems may decide to shift down at that time as well. When line noise occurs during a file transfer between two modems which have established an error correction session, the only evidence of this line noise may very well be slow file transfers and nothing else. Many modems give no other indications this extra work is being required, and may eventually give up and just drop the carrier completely. If you find that downloading ASCII files produces excellent file transfers rates but downloading Zip files reduces the rate, then very likely you have turned on an option known as "data compression." It is like trying to use PKZip to zip a Zip file. In its attempt to shrink the file, it actually causes the file to expand in size and this slows down the file transfer. For high speed file transfers to work you generally want to use some type of flow control. If your modem or software is not set up correctly, it possible that flow control problems will result in errors. When data is lost due to flow control problems there is only one solution and that is to send the data again. This results in slowing down your file transfer. Choosing the right file transfer protocol is important and Xmoden is not always appropriate at high speeds. Zmodem has the ability to re-send the last block of data while other protocols, such as Ymodem/G, have no way to request that data be resent, so the transfer is aborted. Ymodem/G is one of the fastest, but Zmodem is more dependable and recommended for new users. Newer, more advanced protocols are being developed all the time. And if all that is not enough, it seems like certain times of the year introduce more line noise than others. Some causes of line noise are wet ground conditions, which introduces electrical changes in the phone company's lines. Increased traffic on the telephone lines leads to increased noise. Some of the worst conditions can occur on local calls, as local circuits seldom receive the maintenance attention given to long distance circuits. So what can you do about line noise? You can contact your local phone company, as occasionally the phone company does find a correctable problem. Using high quality software and equipment can hide some of the problems. The telephone technology will also continue to mature, with fiber optics and digital lines now a reality in some areas. + + + + + °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°° ² ² ² Board of Trade BBS New Port Richey, Florida ² ² ² ² Home of the Pasco BBS Magazine ² ² ² ² Home of Shadoware ² ² ² ² Bytor Computer Systems, Inc. presents the PC Help Forum ² ² ² ² (813) 862-4772 12/24/48/96/14400 baud ² ² ² ² Member of... ² ² Electronic Frontiers Foundation and American BBS Association ² ² Official Distribution Site for the following: Alive Software, ² ² Apogee Software, Digital Reality, Epic MegaGames, Gamer's Edge, ² ² MVP Software, Software Creations and Westcoast 813 BBS Directory ² ² BBS Voice Line (813) 863-5886 ² °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°° + + + + + Next Month ---------- Next month the Pasco BBS Magazine will celebrate its first anniversary with a special First Anniversary Issue.
