Re: (R)RESTRAINING ORDER
Concerning the Constitution, where is says that we have the right to
change our government.... It would be possible if enough people were
organized. I believe personally that the government wants there to be
discord...such as racial prejudice, etc. because if enough people did
organize to change things, then there would be too much power in their
hands. I think that as long as there is discord, the power is taken out
of the hands of the people, therefore given to the government. Does
this make sense??? I think so! With the various things that keep us in
discord among ourselves, we don't...or that is, enough of us don't agree
on the same issues. The government likes to see us at each others
throats so that "we" the people can't get much accomplished. I'd like
to hear other points of view on this...I don't know if I worded things
as clearly as possible....
....oh well!

I'm not sure about the ratings period, but I do know that The Broadcast
Group was out for my blood!!! When they filed the dismissal on me they
did it without prejudice. They made rumblings to my attorney that I had
better watch myself. My attorney told them that maybe we would fight
the fact they were droping the lawsuit and maybe we would counter sue.
Then they backed off. I think that they think I have money. Don't I
wish. I think that between the bad press they got and the depositions
that were taken, they decided to back off....

Lee Tate is a former caller????? Maybe that's why he sounds so
unprofessional. Actually I'm kind of jealous. It gets you thinking
after listening to women line up to sing your praises on the air.
Except for Jamie's "creampuff" show, I hardly ever hear women callers.
I've never heard anyone receive so many compliments. You must have
"on-air sex appeal". Hey that's an idea!! Maybe I should drop out o f
A.S.U. and go to broadcast school-- once I got on the air-- if I took
after you, I would have a much better love life. hehe. My dog could
have died, but to listen to women tell me how great I am sure would make
me smile. As I'm sure it does for you. I can't understand how someone
so opinionated and outrageous could attract so many women. For the
record, I think you're great at what you do too--just don't let it go to
your head. (hehe). Have you heard from Ed Walsh in WOR? How is he
getting along? And regarding previous comments, weren't you and John
Giese good friends?

...just wondering if you could answer a few general questions about the
station...Was that Ken Nordine who was on the last set of intros and
IDs? Who's voice are we hearing now? (I hope I'm not offending anyone,
but he's the pits!) I'm also interested in the delay system. I'm
guessing that it's digital, since it sometimes sounds like the
station's audio is underwater. I've noticed the same effect at times on
KTAR. Apparently you have the ability with this system to not only
delete something from broadcast but also to "patch the hole" where the
deleted word or words were. Some details on the operation of this
device would be interesting.

Re: DIGITAL DELAYS
Being a former KFYI employee, it would probably not be ethical
for me to comment on the specific delay system used by KFYI, but since
I am the SysOp of The Broadcaster's BBS (at 934-4999), I can give you
general information about digital delays used most frequently in this
marketplace.
The digital delay system(s) (KTAR has 2 - one for 7.5 kHz & one for
15 kHz) used most commonly in Phoenix actually have a touch more than
seven seconds worth of audio program built up in a digital memory. The
"dump" control is usually available to the board operator, the host, and
is available to the engineering staff as well. It may even be remotely
located, under special circumstances (if desired), at a special
location with someone listening to the program feed, making a decision
as to when to dump (a "censor"). Most delays require several minutes to
"catch up" after a "dump", depending on the "catch up rate" set by an
engineer. Some delays also have a "cut" feature, where a single word or
phrase can be removed.
Several stations in the Valley operate without the use of a digital
delay while airing live calls. I can tell you that KFYI is not one of
them (obviously!). Call our BBS if you have any specific questions
about digital delays - many Valley radio & TV engineers frequent us!

Re: DIGITAL DELAYS/LAST POST
I wasn't implying that any station in particular had a monitoring
room set up (for temporary or permanent use) as a "dump site", only that
it is very possible to do so.
Dial-A-Date was a lot of fun to produce (I helped produce it for
awhile - getting contestants, setting them up, etc.) and was fun to
listen to BEFORE the delay (pre-delay) - sometimes you folks missed the
best part of the show (though you could tell by Tom's laughter afterward
that the comments were winners!).

Every once in a while the callers on hold are treated to uncensored

remember once being punched up directly after someone was dumped for
some lewd and lascivious comment, and the host almost dumped me too,
because I was laughing so hard...

Look, if you want the truth, ask any senator or representative and he
will say that we overthrow the government every 4 years. That is in and
of itself (to illiterate) BALONEY. We don't abolish all of those nifty
little government agencies (like the CIA, the FBI, and the NSA) every
four years. We don't abolish income tax every 4 years, and we sure as
hell don't decide who is and is not going to get US aid every 4 years
(or the Israelis would be on their asses by now). What's interesting is
that the people who could REALLY overthrow the government are arrested
for what is called "civil disobedience". I don't know about you, but
I've never seen that on a traffic ticket - who decides what civil
disobedience is? Who decides what the punishment is? And what about a
Civil War? Isn't that a contradiction of terms? "Excuse me . . ." BOOM
"Oh, I'm awfully sorry!"

Tom, a helpful hint on running a BBS. Most systems automaticly kill
the oldest message when the message base is full and someone tries to
enter a new one. Unfortunatly RBBS is one of the few that won't.
Don't plead with the users to kill off their own messages -- just
slaughter the oldest 100 or so when the message base fills up. Believe
me, no one will notice.

The reason KFYI shouldn't have made a big a deal out of this is the
same reason Paramount Pictures doesn't sue all those Star Trek fanzines
out there for copyright violation. Even though, technicaly, they would
have every right to sue all those fans that were writing and publishing
stories containing the Star Trek characters, it would be a public
relations disaster. Those fans are their bread and butter, and they are
willing to overlook the technical violation to keep their good will.

Re: (R)DIGITAL DELAYS
You can tell when KFYI's digital delay is catching up after dumping
something, as the sound is a bit garbled. It sounds like little bits of
dead air are being inserted into the sound, so that something that would
take, say, five seconds to broadcast, may take something like seven
seconds. It's sort of like they way in typesetting, slivers of white
space are put between the letters so that the text fills out an entire
line exactly.
This, if I'm assuming correctly, would enable the delay to get seven
seconds behind the host again. I wonder how fast it fills, and if the
caller immediately following a dump said something unbroadcastable,
would there be enough delay built up to get rid of it? (Since I've
never worked for a radio station, I have no qualms about speculating --
heh heh.)

Re: (R)POWER
Michael,
The reasonns for the excellent radio reception in cars is many. Probably
the best is that cars as a rule are located out of doors. AM signal
does not like anything in its way. This is why when you go under a
bridge the reception fades. Another reason is the antenna. On most home
systems the AM antenna is a small DiPole arangement. (This is the small
round tubular black thing on the back of the receiver) Add to this the
fact that the receiver is usually located next to a wall, in a cabinet,
or in some other hidden place and you do not have ideal AM situations.
Hope this helps..Also I hope I am fairly right!

Re: (R)POWER
An auto radio seems more 'powerful' because it probably has a better
antenna system. Most home radios use an internal antenna which is
practically useless at any distance from the transmitter, but your
car has that big whip antenna on the fender. I have always hooked up
the external AM antenna on my stereo and it has always seemed worth
the trouble.

Re: (R)POWER
Antenna systems although important make up for less than 10% of the
quality produced from the speakers.
Traps, filters and weather conditions can make the best antenna system
useless. A Bad I.F. oscillator or offbeat mixer could do a lot..but
the question was "Why do car stereos sound better..?"
Stereo is a function capable of being affected by received signal
strength and is rarely ever spoken of when dealing with AM stations
unless you're an idealist Engineer.
Accoustics are a major source of why car sound systems 'seem' to be
much better than their in-home companions. Think of this;
If you locked yourself into a tiny room with very little more than
seating space and cranked up your Home depot stereo, how much lower
would you need the volume to hear it then?
The Truth is, many car stereo receivers are built a lot better circuit
wise than the larger home site models. What you buy for your home is
rarely little more than a huge plastic box with a tiny circuit board
inside. Believe me, I've repaired thousands of them. Those high sticker
prices are built mostly around looks and idiot lights.
MORE: [Y]es, N)o, NS)non-stop? y
Manufacturers knew that if you purchased a home stereo and it sounded a
little crappy on your favourite station that you would no doubt pull
out some wire and make an antenna or buy one of theirs normally sold
right next to the display stands (CONT)

Re: POWER CONT...
...but if you buy a car stereo system, install it and it sounds
crappy on your favourite station, they know that you wont be putting
up an 80 meter beam antenna or an inverted 'V' unless you drive a VW.
No, you're going to take the unit back and get a better one...and never
buy their equipment again.
What continually amazes me is that people go for items with more lights
than Las Vegas and silk screened with technical phraseology and buzz
words such like; "VGX-960", "TURBO PLL" , "INTELLIGENT TRACKING SYSTEM"
"DELTA TUNING" -this one's a misnomer as it could mean you have to
continually tune the knob in order to continue receiving..
True Audiophiles (and one I am NOT) will be able to shop for you
if you want a good radio in the home. You have to decide right from
the start on how many dollars you affix to the importance of the sound
quality. I.E. You don't buy a Rolls Royce engine to stick it in a
Chevette...in other words, you don't buy a Blaupunkt and hot wire it
to some left over boom-box speakers.
Enjoy.
