Re: NEW WEEKEND HOST
Did anyone catch the new show that KFYI has on with a guy named, I
believe, Lee Tate? If you didn't, I'm not surprised -- it runs from 12
midnight to 3am Saturday and Sunday nights. That seemed a bit bizare to
me. I think he can be best described as a black Mark Williams.

Re: BROADCASTER'S BBS
B}ie sure to call The Broadcaster's BBS, at 934-4999 (300/1200/2400
Baud - 24 hours) to find out what's happening in radio and television in
the Valley, and in the nation! There's even a question concerning Tom
Leykis in the (V)o{_tin section. Be sure to cast your vote after
validation!
Tom frequents The Broadcaster's BBS as well, so when this system's
busy, he can be reached over there!

Re: INFLUENCE
There is no doubt in my mind that Tom Leykis has had more influence
on talk radio programming in the Valley than any other programmer or
host has had since the late 50's. I wasn't around then, but I
understand that there were some real enthusiastic hosts back then - kind
of like the type of talk programming we have come to expect from Tom.
They say mimmicing is the sincerest form of flattery, and KTAR is
mimmicing Tom's programming ideas pretty well. Their recent version of
the battle of the talkshow hosts was entert~raining, and could almost be
called controversial.

Amend to that, brother. I was listening to KTAR that day and couldn't
belive my ears. The only problem I had was that they all sounded alike.
I guess Bill Heywood wasn't there, but they all sounded like him.

Re: (R)YOU'RE BACK?
He's on KFYI's sister station KKFR, which is 92.3. I've been meaningf
to catch his show also. He was walking around with a microphone at the
last Battle of the Talk Show hosts, but I haven't heard him on the air.
I meant to tune in a couple of months back when Tom was doing the news
on their station. I'd still like to listen to Maryanne Watkins in a
less restrained format.
Please let us in on the status of F.O.T.L.. I think management has
succeeded in calming the anger of most of the afternoon listeners. But,
what is the real status of Tom, and what should we do about it? Have
you gotten a response from the majority stockholder that you wrote to?
Is the picketing still on? What should we do when talking to
advertisers whose attitude is, "If Tom's on the air, it doesn't matter
if he has a contract or not; he's still pulling in a lot of listeners."?
Please advise.

Re: (R)FRIENDS OF TOM LEYKIS
Well, you're not the only supporter that lives on the west side. I
called to let you know that I won't be able to make it to the picketing.
I regret the fact that I can't be there, but because I didn't keep
myself informed as to my final exam schedule...I found out last night
that I will be having some of my finals on that same week of May 1st.
And I am also loaded down with homework to be turned in before certain
dates! The pressure is *UNBELIEVABLE* Sorry, but I had to let you
know. I guess all of this came down at a bad time, because I have not
had the chance to do anything outside of my classes and homework!
Well, I guess that I should actually say "not much of a chance to do
anything" outside of my classes and homework.

Re: (R)YOU'RE BACK?
Hi, I guess that I won't be able to see you at the picketing. If you
read the message before this one, it explains why. I'll have to give
you the address for Amnesty International via computer. Well, actually
its because finals and homework will be getting into my way that
particular week! And because I want to pass my classes, I need to be
studying, etc. during that time. Some of my finals will be given (I
just found this out last night) during the week of May 1st. I regret
having to miss out on the action...sometimes I really don't (this is
putting it nicely) like being a student, it cuts into your social life
terribly!!! Well, I wish you people luck at the picketing! Au revoir!

Re: (R)YOU'RE BACK?
Howard,
I caught your show Tuesday morning. Not bad, not bad at all. If your
playlist was more to my liking, I'd probably listen to KKFR all the
time. As it is I'll still listen from time to time.
Barry Young, eat your heart out....

Re: (R)YOU'RE BACK?
I like having some sort of live DJ introducing the songs. Somehow,
listening to an hour of music with nothing but taped jingles and slogans
in between them sounds 'cold' to me. I feel that there's no one at the
station, and someone just loaded a five-hour tape and went home.

Mike...thanks for the good words.
As for the music...I play it, but I don't buy the stuff! (What worries
me is that some people out there DO...heh heh...)
Keep listening. Hope I don't honk you off.

All you have to do is read this bbs and post one 'glad to hear you on

Could Mecham be behind this? (grin)

Re: FRIENDS OF TOM LEYKIS
ATTENTION----------------ATTENTION-----------------------ATTENTION-----
THE PICKITING THAT WAS SCHEDULED FOR NEXT WEEK HAS BEEN CALLED OFF. I
WAS SERVED PAPERS THAT SHOW A JUDGE HAS ISSUED A RESTRAINING ORDER
SAYING THAT NO PICKET CAN OCCUR, NO LETTERS CAN BE SENT TO SPONSORS OR
TO KFYI. THERE WILL BE A COURT HEARING TO DECIDE IF THIS IS TO BE MADE
PERMANENT.
The funny thing is, I was not named in the action, but I guess because
Fred had my address and thought I was an official of FRIENDS OF TOM
LEYKIS, he had me served. Interesting for a station that supports
First Amendment Rights to trample on mine!!!!!
Because of this order, no more messages will be forthcoming on the
subject of Tom Leykis. I have not given up my support of Tom. But I am
under a court order, I guess, not to do anything else. I would suggest
that none of you faithful followers of Tom do anything further.

Re: RESTRAINING ORDER
How can a restraining order be issued if it curtails our 1st Amendment
Rights to protest an action taken by someone. Were we supporting rivals
of the station, I could see it being issued on restraint of trade
issues. I suppose treatening sponsors that we will not patronize them
if we don't like the station could be seen a some strange prior
restraint, but it's nuts.

Re: (R)FRIENDS OF TOM LEYKIS
That's absurd!!
It's nothing but intimtation, pure and simple. I'll try calling Earl
Baldwin about it tonight. He, among the hosts, has not cut off callers
that wanted to talk about Tom. With his consulting business and ads
that he does, he isn't in any terror about losing his job.

Re: (R)FRIENDS OF TOM LEYKIS
I suggest you talk to Louis Rhodes at the Arizona Civil Liberties Union
or your own lawyer. That restraining order sounds illegal to me. What
and whose actions precisely are being limited? There is definitely no
way that restraining order can legally prevent me from sending letters
to sponsors or KFYI. I suggest that anyone who hasn't personally been
served continue writing letters.

Re: (R)FRIENDS OF TOM LEYKIS
Funny, I thought that the right to lawful congregation was part of our
constitution, and one of the reasons that we had a revolution against
Britain. I suppose that we are guilty of wrongful congregation before
the picketing happens, and must prove that we are innocent? There may
be more on this later . . .

Re: IS THIS OUT OF HAND?
I am becoming concerned. In the begining the effort was to get Leykis
back on the air. I am in total ageement with this idea. However, last
night I was
served a summons concering the actions of the "Friends of Tom Leykis"
group; actions with which I have had no involvement except to express
my "verbal" support of Tom on this BBS??? I don't want to appear a
"fair weather friend", but can someone explain this to me??
