Re: (R)TOM'S BACK
After spending the last two days in San Diego, I come back to find out
that I missed two of your shows. Talk about bad timing on my part!!
I certainly hope they call you back this afternoon. Correction; I hope
the management comes to its senses and calls you back permanently!!

Uh-oh...pressure!
Actually, what we do in the morning at KKFR is more
stream-of-consciousnees rather than a lot of forced and contrived stuff
that, just for the sake of doing it, ends up sounding half-a$$ed
amusing. Maryann Watkins (who also does news on KFYI) is my newswoman/
partner on the show, and her insight and knowledge of what's going on
really helps the attitude of the show. Hope ya like it. If not, I'll
join ya in listening to AM when Tom's on!
Cheers,

Re: (R)YOU'RE BACK?
Nothing personal. I've never caught your show; I'll listen tomorrow
morning. All I hear these days is what seems to be someone reading a
short blurb that starts when one song fades and finishes with the intro
to the next song. Is it because there are so few dj's with anything
worthwhile to say that management feels that everything must be written
down? I don't hear conversation, only promos. Am I wrong? I hope you
show me that I am when I catch your show tomorrow morning.

Re: SPEC. ANNOUCE.
Judging from Tom's closing comments on his show yesterday, "Only God
knows who will be on between 3 and 7 today"
He does not expect to be on today? Let's hope he is...
It will be interesting to see what Fred has up his sleeve now.
What is the purpose of having Mark Williams sitting in with another
host a couple of times a day? Are they going to try a new Talk format?

Re: (R)TOM'S RETURN...?
Do you really think KFYI was serious about a "BATTLE" at the 7000 seat
Sundome? IN SUN CITY WEST? When the last BATTLE took place in MESA
there were always empty seats and I'll bet that the capacity of that
room was about 75 to 100 tops.

I am still an "on-call" host. I have been "called in" the last two days.
I don't know how long it will last, but I've enjoyed talking with
everyone again. I don't know anything about the Battle.

Re: TOM'S RETURN...?
I noticed that they had stopped advertising the Battle, so I was
wondering if it would be canceled. The promo mentions an upcomming
important announcement, probably naming a new permament afternoon host.
That may be Tom, OR it may be....?

Re: FRIENDS OF TOM LEYKIS
We are in the process of lining up pickets for the station. We will be
doing it within the next two weeks. It will have to be done sometime
Monday thru Friday to be effective. We will be advising all of the
press as to date and time.
This would be a great time for any and all of you to meet each other and
give Tom added support. If you can make/take time, we can use help with
making signs, and lining up times for picketing.
We are going to have T-Shirts made up and they will be available at
cost, for anyone who wants to wear one.
If you can help, please contact me at 937-0563, evenings or weekends.

Good idea. We have to keep the presure on. Once Tom is back on
permanently, we will contact all of the sponsors and offer our support.
However, we have gotten at least one call from a sponsor who stated that
we don't need someone like Tom. The s.o.b. wouldn't tell us who he was
even though we told him who we were. Maybe it was Fred Weber in
disguise!
If you haven't read message #618, please do so. Also 620 (I think).

NOTE------NOTE-----NOTE-----NOTE-----NOTE-----NOTE-----NOTE-----NOTE---
Tom Leykis being back may only be TEMPORARY!!!! Tom is only working
day to day. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT WE DO NOT LET UP WITH OUR CALLS AND
LETTERS TO KFYI AND TO THE SPONSORS!!!!!
From what we can tell:
l. Tom was put back on the air because of all of our efforts. But this
is only TEMPORARY!! No peace treaty has been signed by Fred Weber!!!!
2. The "Battle" was cancelled because word leaked out that FRIENDS OF
TOM LEYKIS would show up "live and in person" to defend Tom Leykis!!!
Its not over till its over as a famous baseball player once said. DO
NOT quit sending cards and letters or making those telephone calls.
Make yourself a promise to send at least one letter each and every day
to a sponsor. If you need a sample letter let me know. I also have
copies of "Fitz's" column and "Bud's" colunm, if you need copies. I
send copies of each along with a letter to each sponsor. You should
also call KFYI and let them know THAT YOU APPRECIATE TOM BEING BACK ON
THE RADIO. But tell them we want him back on PERMANENTLY!!!! PLEASE
PLEASE, DON'T LET UP. We won a BATTLE, not the WAR!!!!!!

I heard that show! I couldn't believe it; I only heard about 1 and 1/2
sentences and thought, what's going on, this sounds LIFELIKE instead of
just workman like, and then realized it was T.L. I just hope that it
indicates Fred is coming to his senses. Maybe the owners of the station

Re: TOM'S RETURN
I work nights, so when I woke up at about 5:50pm and turned on my
radio I was really shocked. Barry had indicated that morning that Mark
Williams was going to be filling in that day "until a permament host is
found." When I heard the guest and some caller talking about bigotry,
I though it was Mark doing his "disect-a-bigot" which he does from time
to time. Then, "Tom Leykis on the Talk Station, 910, KFYI." *That*
sure woke me up. So far, Earl Baldwin and Barry Young have been cagey
about who's going to be on today. Well, we'll find out.
This could have been a trial run, to see if Tom could get back on the
air without makeing a big deal over it (i.e., to not embarass the
management any more than they have been already, with the bad press).
I *hope* so, but I have no way of knowing.

Re: (R)DIAL-A-DATE
There is no logic in Mr. Weber's actions the past few months, but I do
have a hypothesis. It seems to me that Fred Weber, while having some
business experience, has no ability in programming a news/talk radio
station. He would've kept himself out of a lot of trouble if he stuck
to management and left the broadcasting end of the business to a very
professional program director such as Tom Leykis. (Not a yes-man like
Barry Young.) If Barry had any professional integrity, he would not
have taken the post for the same reasons that Tom resigned.

I gotta tell you, that's a good price - BUT (here goes the tech stuff,
not really for this BBS but just this once) the Packard Bell, last time
I checked, was NOT Hayes AT command compatable. Sure, the warranty is
important, but will Packard Bell support you when you have no idea how
to run your software on it? To be honest, I wouldn't buy anything less
than 2400 BPS for an IBM/Compatable machine, as 3 and 1200 are sometimes
not only unbearably slow, but almost useless for online ANSI graphics
and file transfers. Here, 1200 is probably fine, as you are only
reading messages. However (Tom will love this), this is NOT the only
BBS in the Valley. If you're thinking of getting a modem (here comes
the plug, you could all see it coming) why not try a USRobotics Courier
at 2400 or even 4800 BPS. With that, you could fly.

George, I think we all were suprised. I remember the Tuesday that Tom
was supposed to be back on the air. At 3:00, I was anxiously awaiting
an exciting broadcast. When I heard Barry Young and Victoria Jones on
the air, I knew something was up. When Barry read Weber's press
release, I was in shock. Surely no man could be stupid enough to take
this valley's hottest radio personality off of the air, and replace him
with Victoria Jones. Has Victoria, (or any other talk show host from
Phoenix) been on the Geraldo Rivera and Oprah Winfrey talk shows? Was
Weber insane? My disbelief became anger, but unfortunately the lines
were jammed and I couldn't express my opinion. And the hosts can't talk
about it any more. (Compliments of Fred Weber) In fact I got on the
air one day when Barry said he would agree with anything the callers
said, and be polite about it. I asked him if he agreed Fred Weber was
a nincompoop. He said that while he would agree, he didn't
have to broadcast it. Since when was some one tape delayed for saying
'nincompoop'? But to answer your question George, only The sick mind of

Tom, you have said many times over on the air that your expressed
opinions are legitimate, that you didn't make statements designed for
controversy. One afternoon you were going on at length about how you
only did it for the money and that if someone would pay you a hefty
salary to go to a desert island and do nothing, you would go gladly.
Now you seem to be doing that, give or take one's definition of 'hefty'.
What's the deal? I wanted to call you that day and ask you if you'd go
over to KTAR and be nice to the widows and interview the liver spots
doctor if they payed you enough...
A close friend from high school is (or was, anyway) a highly payed DJ at
WRIF -- the ABC o&o FM rocker in Detroit. We grew up together listening
to rock music and both were really into it. I saw him about 8 years ago
and he floored me when he told me that he'd do any format -- c&w,
easy listening, whatever -- if the price was right.
What I'm saying is that on-air personalities become something special to
the folks that follow them. They believe that they do what they do
because the enjoy it and believe in it, and are disillusioned when they
find out otherwise.
In your case I suspect that you really do do it with sincerity and that
you would quickly tire of the desert island and want to be back 'doing
what you do best.'

Re: TAKING ACTION
I know there are a lot of us out there who are extremely frustrated
with Fred Weber's actions. I've also noticed that there is now a policy
at KFYI in which talk of Tom is not allowed. Sunday, while Mark
Williams, was asking for a list of "Stupid Things", I called in, only to
hear from the board operator, that any mention of Tom would not go on
the air. He said it was a policy instituted by "management". In other
words, Fred Weber. I suppose this is to create the illusion that the
listeners have forgotten Tom. He is not allowing us to express our
opinion. I wonder if he is even reading the massive amounts of mail he
is receiving. For those of you who share my frustration: LET'S DO
SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!! We should put our heads together and come up
with a plan of action that we can carry out. I am asking that all ideas
be left as a reply so that we can twist Weber's arm a bit. That jerk
tried to prove that he has ultimate authority over Tom by taking him off
the air. I say we show Mr. Weber that the listeners and advertisers
have authority over him. As a whole, I'm sure we can come up with some
excellent ideas. So please reply with your suggestions. We need to
send a clear message to Fred Weber that we're not going to take this
from him, and we want Tom Leykis back on the air!

I agree with you that I listen for subjects, but no one seems to be
booking them the way Tom did. I remember driving home from work as Tom
would mention what he had coming up. If I had a nickel for every time
I said, "He can't be seriously doing that topic!" I could buy a radio
station and we could have Tom back on the air. (Well, I guess I'd have
to toss in a nickel for each time Tom made a remark and I said, "I can't
believe he said that!" to afford a station, but you get the point.)

Congratulations on being able to afford CompuServe at 2400 baud.
I don't use CS very much any more for that reason. I still use slow
300 baud occasionally to cut costs but after being used to 2400 on
local Phx BBS's 300 is terribly slow. I can down-load most of what I

I didn't know you have to call a different number! Big-time
fun. Say, if any of you get on CIS, I just read an article
about a guy who runs the JFORUM... for journalists. The guy
who runs it is Jim Cameron, who is a news anchor for United
Stations Radio Network. He also narrates books onto cassette,
and does "media training" for CEOs, doctors, politicians,
authors, etc. I guess "media training" prepares them for the
interview situation (everything from talk shows to 60 Minutes
he says.) Cameron also ran the Source for NBC for 2-1/2 yrs.
and has won 3 Major Armstrong awards. Most of the activity on
JFORUM is in the message areas, and interesting threads are
stashed in the data libraries for future reference. He says
another purpose is for journalist-types to compare notes,
share contacts, and find jobs. I haven't tried it yet, but
it certainly looks interesting!

A number of you have gotten into the habit of making all of your

Please be considerate. One reason it seems as if there is nothing to

a message is of the utmost personal nature, why not make it public so
all of us can read it? When the BBS asks about your security on a

Re: OPEN LETTER
During the ensuing years I grew more and more attached to your
station, becoming emotionally involved with its crew, its callers, and
the issues and personalities it exposed. I followed its growth in both
listenership and importance, was enthralled by the impact it had on
Valley and state politics, and thrilled to hearing its name mentioned
on network newscasts, TV talk shows and even in the Congressional
Record. I feel these accomplishments can be largely attributed to Tom
Leykis' sometimes unorthodox but always ambitious and forward-thinking
leadership.
As the director of a paranormal information service, I regularly
supplied information and guest contacts to your producers and talk show
hosts, and appeared as a guest three times myself. Because of the
exceedingly bland nature of your competition, the thought of providing
those services to that station never even entered my head.
Now with the dismissal of Tom Leykis foreboding the reversal of
KFYI's progress toward becoming a world-class radio station, I no
longer find myself compelled to put up with the monaural cacophony that
is AM radio. So I want to thank you for ending my emotional involvement
with KFYI. Now I can finally enjoy FM stereo on my receiver, knowing
that I'm not missing much on the AM side.

Dear Mr. Weber:
I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for your
recent personnel change at KFYI.
About three years ago, I purchased a $2000 stereo system. About
two and a half years ago, I moved to the Valley from the East Coast.
Right about that time, Tom Leykis was beginning to make a name for
himself and for your station. As a result of the provocative,
challenging, and outrageous tone he imparted to KFYI, I found it
impossible to avail myself of the high-fidelity capabilities of my
stereo, choosing instead to listen incessantly to an AM station for the
first time in memory.

The trial is indeed engrossing. I confess to have purchased a Sony
Watchman in order to better keep up with it. Local News: the overall
formats, etc., are pap but recent visits to places like LA, Boston,
etc., show little difference. Overall local coverage is best on 5,
particularly things like city government. Their Mecham coverage has
been so-so. Ruggiero is good but not God. I saw him do a rather
embarassing, poorly prepared job of hosting a Mayoral/Council
candidates' night at Horizon High School last year. The political
reporter at KTVK/3 (Elizabeth Vargas?) does a creditible job. For
anchors, the comparative performances of Kent Dana and Cameron Harper
when interviewing Mecham last year tells it all. Dana was clearly out
of his league and incapable of anything short of reading prepared
questions, as well as being timid as hell. Harper's comportment is now
legend, but the most revealing thing was that he knew the material and
was able roperly follow up. Yes, Horizon does a daily wrapup of
impeachment events. If anyone is God in this market, it may well be
Michael Grant.

I'm not surprised. Only one station in town has figured out that
Arizonans want NEWS, and not people named Heidi and Patti and Debi and
Mindi and Cindi frolicking about, and that is KPHO-TV. Too bad they
don't budget more resources for news. As it is, they do surprising well
for a station with a shortage of street reporters and other key people.
Radio stations could fill this void if they wanted to. TV and radio
stations in this town alike have this idea that folks move here to "get
away from it all". Little do they realize that folks who move here from
cities such as Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, etc. EXPECT to see
aggressive and complete news reporting. They get pap.
I predict that stations who have underestimated the public's interest in
the impeachment trial will be unpleasantly surprised.

Re: (R)LET'S JUST FACE IT
Just for a little "out of town" perspective on coverage of the
Impeachment trial - down here in Tucson it is hard to find a radio or TV
that isn't tuned to the trial all day. Every bar, barbershop, office,
retail store, you name it - they all have the trial on. I have even
encountered radios playing the trial in offices that would never, but
never have allowed a radio for anything else. And the people who, for
whatever reason, can't listen to or watch the trial are constantly
asking everyone who walks in what is happening.
Certainly the trial is anything but "boring." What is missing to some
extent, although the PBS station that carries the trial down here tries,
is really cogent commentary on the legal and tactical aspects of the
proceedings. But then, you can't have everything.
It is hard for me to imagine any station being hesitant to carry the
trial if it fits their format, i.e., a news/talk station or all-news
station.

Re: PAT ROBERTSON
Also, in the late 1970's Robertson believed the Second Coming of Jesus
was imminent. He became convinced that Russia would invade Israel in
1982. He made plans in 1979 (while Gerard Straub was his producer, see
Straub's book for details) to televise the Second Coming on CBN. They
even worried about whether Jesus' luminescence would wreak havoc with
the TV cameras.
If this guy somehow manages to become president, this country is in deep
trouble.
(BTW, more sources on Robertson's statement about only Christians and
Jews being qualified for public office, Robertson's denial, and his
subsequent embarrassment may be found in the following issues of Time
magazine: Sep. 28, 1987 pp. 22-23; letter from Gerard Straub Oct. 26,

"The most extreme of Robertson's utterances that we hope to get widely
aired (ones that do not require long explanations of his convoluted
theology to bring out their obscene implications) are:
"1. His recommendation that there be special Christian courts to rule
on the validity of 'spirit-filled' Christians' claims that direct
instructions from God induced them to break the law. If the Christian
judges rule that the message from God was authentic, the accused will
become immune from prosecution for illegal acts committed in obedience
to that message.
"2. His proposal that there be prophetic Christian police authorized
to arrest those whom God says will commit crimes in the future. It
seems that in Robertson's utopia divine revelations can be used against
dissidents much as psychiatric diagnoses are used in the Soviet
Union--or as 'spectral evidence' was used in the Salem Witch Trials.
"3. Robertson's stated belief that sometimes God, through a prophet,
instructs his chosen people to exterminate an unregenerate human group
completely, to 'kill them all,' in order to stop that group from
procreating additional generations who would ultimately overpopulate
Hell."

Tom: I caught the end of your show this evening on Pat Robertson. It's
about time some serious attention is paid to some of the wacko claims he
has made in the past. I recommend you get a copy of the Winter 1987/88
issue of Free Inquiry magazine, which contains an article titled
"Re-broadcasting the True Pat Robertson". The author, Edmund D. Cohen,
and Gerard Straub (former producer of the "700 Club" and author of
SALVATION FOR SALE: AN INSIDE VIEW OF PAT ROBERTSON'S ORGANIZATION,
another good reference on Robertson) are presently the main source for
the media of accurate quotations from Robertson. The Christian
Broadcasting Network no longer honors journalists' requests for tape of
Robertson broadcasts, but Cohen and Straub have every "700 Club"
broadcast back to October 1984.
In the next message I will quote three points from the article which
are proposals Robertson has made on the 700 Club about how he thinks the
country should be run.
Since I still have space here, let me point out that when Robertson
was initially asked about his statement that only Christians and Jews
should be allowed to hold public office, he denied it. Straub and Cohen
produced tape to the contrary (700 Club, Jan. 11, 1985).

The am station I work for WLIM has been trying to get an fm

go into to meet spacing requirements, they have an exclusive

prompt you see, then type "M" for Main, and you're back. It's an easy
way to check in ONLY to exchange ideas, and not to have to wade through
general interest messages. And thanks for using The News/Talk Radio

Re: WLIR IS DEAD
WLIR FM Garden City is no more. Effective midnight this morning WLIR
signed off the air after a licence battle going back to 1971.
The licence of John Reager was revoked in 1984 and his partner
ELTON SPITZER was appointed interum operator. The licence was granted
to a minority who lost it on appeal. The new licencee signed on the new
92.7 at midnight. The New calls are WDRE (DARE)
Elton Spitzer attempted to buy WGSM/WCTO from Greater Media earlier this
year to make WCTO into WLIR. That deal fell apart, and greater media has
decided to keep the stations.
It was announced today that Spitzer has bought WRCN/WRHD in Riverhead.
He plans to replace the staff and format of WRCN with the new music
format from WLIR. He Retains the call letters WLIR. So shortly it will
be WLIR 103.9 RIVERHEAD.
The new WDRE has a few bugs this morning at about 8:05am the ebs tone
went off in the middle of a song, there was about 4 minutes of dead air,
the ebs tone went off again and the music returned.........
By the way for the last 6 hours of WLIR Spitzer changed the format to
Big Bands(you know glenn miller etc)

Re: SOVIET NEWS-TALK
The recent summit gave some of the Soviets a chance to experience
the radio-talk format and I understand they were intrigued with the
concept of people calling in from all over and talking to them on the
radio. I wonder if we'll see such a thing in the U.S.S.R. anytime
soon, but there may be hope. Despite all the Soviet bashing you
constantly hear in the U.S., changes ARE taking place behind the
Iron Curtain. Talk-radio seems to fit right in with 'glasnost.'
I would encourage program directors to give a call to the Soviet
embassy, the Novesti Press Agency, or any consulate. My experience
with the Soviets at the summit indicates they are very P-R
conscious and just might be willing to join you in a conference call!

Re: PROJECT CENSORED
I am trying to locate the latest report of PROJECT CENSORED. This is
produced by a very distinguished group of journalists/writers/
academicians who rate what they feel were the most UNDERREPORTED
stories of a given year. In 1985, they gave their top rating to the
bombing in El Salvador which has created more than a million refugees.
Another of their top ratings went to Star Wars research, perhaps the
ultimate Catch 22...researchers who dissent are not allowed to
discuss research failures because they're classified, while supporters
are encouraged to discuss Star Wars successes!
I will try and soon upload the 1985 Project Censored report. Leave me
a message if you know where I can get any later reports.

Re: KVEN NEWSTALK
Just want to introduce KVEN D. We've been doing NewsTalk froDDor
8 years in Ventura (between LA and Santa Barbara) with live programming
from 5AM to 4PM. Several years ago we hired Bruce Marr as our consultant
and with his help we've developed some excellent local talk hosts -- one
a non-braoadcasterDDDDDDDDDDoadcaster who has
developed into a strong DDDDDDDD popular local
personality. We carry Bruce Williams live at 4PM and in addition to
TAlknet we carry Larry King overnight.
Congratulations Tom and Christine rDfor creating this unique
communication tool .

Re: LET EVERYONE KNOW!
I have posted our number for the News/Talk Radio Forum on Compuserve's
Journalists' Forum, Broadcast Professionals' Forum, and National
Bulletin Board so that we can get folks from across the country to
participate. Is anyone registered with The Source or GEnie? Why not post
our number there so we can get more folks involved? Pass our number
around to anyone who works in the industry! Thanks.
