As reported in the Arizona Republic, Business Section, the
failure of the thrift corporations in this country are the direct
result of bad construction and real estate loans. It didn't give
specific data figures but I am assuming that the real estate loans they
mention are not all business property related as thrift institutions
are also into financing private housing. Does anyone have access to
these statistics? Rod

Here's an interesting item from the "letters" column of the current issue of
Weekly World News:

Editors: The story about the guy who eats tonsils cut from other
people (Weekly World News, September 20) is the most disgusting thing I've
ever read anywhere. And I find it insulting that you'd actually run a
picture of him popping them down like oysters.
That's cannibalism, pure and simple, and I think even in England that
must be against the law. He ought to be behind bars. What do you think
he'd say to that? -- R.O., Seattle, Wash.

"Our few thousand missles [sic] should be sufficient until our internal
problems are settled."

I think you hit on a good point there. And that is exactly what the
military is doing, attempting to have just enough of the right arms to
effectively defend the U.S. and its interests. I suppose the disagreement
stems from whose definition of "just enough" we deem correct.

In the case of nuclear missiles (this is how it's really spelt [sic]), one
must not only have enough to be able to target most/all major military and
industrial sites, but must have enough to do so *AFTER* an initial strike
may have disabled any number of missiles. Thus, just because the world
could be destroyed many times over (as some claim) if all missiles were
fired at the same time, and all succeeded in their mission, this scenario is
highly unlikely.

Note that SDI might help the U.S. eventually get more bang (better defense)
for the buck (at lower maintenance costs), while making us even safer.

Keep that in mind when you write your elected officials (you do write, don't
you?)

You are likely to capture a greater quantity of houseflies if you
discontinue utilization of acetic acid, and instead employ syrup produced
within the interior of beehives, as an agent for attracting the
aforementioned winged arthropods.

A deficit of forethought engenders the inefficient utilization of resources.

The information monopoly

The rapidly increasing concentration of media ownership in
the U.S. raises critical questions about whether the public
has access to diverse opinion. And not surprisingly, the
impact of this information monopoly continues to be ignored
by the mass media.
In 1982, when media expert Ben Bagdikian completed
research for his book *The Media Monopoly*, he found that 50
corporations controlled half or more of the media
business. By December 1986, when he finished a revision
for a second edition, that figure had shrunk to 29
corporations. Six months later, when he wrote an article
for the media publication *Extra*, the number was down to
26. Some Wall Street media analysts predict that by the
1990s six giant firms will control most of our media.
Bagdikian notes that of the 1,700 daily papers, 98 percent
are local monopolies and fewer than 15 corporations control
most of the country's circulation. A handful of firms
control most of the magazine business, with Time, Inc. alone
accounting for about 40 percent of that industry's revenues.
The three broadcasting networks - Capital Cities/ABC, CBS,
and NBC - still have majority access to the television
audience, and most of the book business is controlled by

fewer than a dozen companies, with major categories like
paperback and trade books dominated by still fewer firms.
The situation is exacerbated by the conflict of interest
caused by interlocking boards of directors. An earlier
study, by Peter Dreier and Steven Weinberg, found this
phenomenon in major newspaper chains like Gannet, which
shared directors with Merrill Lynch, Standard Oil of Ohio,
20th Century Fox, Kerr-McGee, McDonnell Douglas, McGraw-Hill,
Eastern Airlines, Phillips Petroleum, Kellogg Company, and
New York Telephone.
The most influential newspaper in America, *The New York
Times*, shared directors with Merck, Morgan Guaranty Trust,
Bristol-Myers, Charter Oil, Johns-Manville, American
Express, Bethlehem Steel, IBM, Scott Paper, Sun Oil, and
First Boston Corporation.
Bagdikian's warning is onimous: "A shrinking number of
large media corporations now regard monopoly and historic
levels of profit as not only normal, but as their earned
right. In the process, the usual democratic expectations
for the media - diversity of ownership and ideas - have
disappeared."

I do not have the correct figures for the total costs of the
development and manufacture of the B1 Bomber although I would suspect
that it would be enough to provide adequate food, water, education,
health and housing for everyone in the world for one year. These
costs have been estimated to be $17 billion dollars a year, or about
as much as the world spends on arms every two weeks.
It is fine to have adequate defenses for your soil but I
strongly suspect that the Reagan Administration would like to see the
U.S. as strong as it was in 1946 and thereby being able to dictate its
policy worldwide. In so attempting, we have used enough manpower and
material to have brought about a fair peace only if the leaders of
this nation had intelligence and foresight.
I also am told that our F15 and F16 fighter aircraft have a
little problem in that for every hour they are in flight, as many as
50 hours have to be spent in maintenance. Star Wars is another
examply of military insanity that has hurt our nation. It is no
wonder that we as a nation are now the biggest debtor in the world.
Someone should give Reagan two six-shooters and send him over to our
enemy and have a fast draw match to determine whether he lives or
dies. Leave me out of this. This world is paranoid and sick with
hatred and a military buildup seems to be our leaders answers.

In the ten years of marijuana decriminalization in the Netherlands,
marijuana use among teens has declined, as has heroin use. Marijuana and
hashish is not subsidized by the government.
Heroin use in the U.S., on the other hand, has gone up in the last ten
years. Marijuana use has dropped slightly. Use of both heroin and
marijuana is higher per-capita in the U.S. than in the Netherlands (by
about 10 times for heroin).

The United States is surrounded by hostile nations and if our
military becomes lax, the freedoms we enjoy will no longer exist. It
is unfortunate that we have homeless and hungry people within our
borders but if we cut our military spending in order to feed, house,
and clothe the unfortunate, we would be endangering every soul in this
nation.
Our leaders have the interest of the people at heart, after all,
do we not enjoy the most freedoms of any country on this bleak planet?
Even though the vast majority of our working class is struggling,
in other nations the people suffer at least twice as much. In Russia
for instance, their leaders are basically evil. They have only their
own interests at heart and no others. They, deep down, know that the
United States' system of democracy is by far the best in the world but
when you are a totally self-serving entity, no one else matters.
It should not be alarming that in a few years, six or seven
corporations will control the information media, because in other
countries only one group controls it. It should not matter that in
order for the working class to purchase a home in American that it
takes 30 years and more than one job, because in communist countries
you can never own one. We should stop knocking this system as it is
the best system on the face of the earth.
If we invest our energy and resources in better weapons of
defense perhaps we can become the leaders of other nations. We must,
at any cost, stamp out Communism in this world. R

After reading it again, he let it drop to the floor.
"So, Beau and Jim are dead and so is Jeannie too! Poor JT! Even he did not
deserve to die like that!" he thought to himself. "This has got to be
stopped."
The light from the fireplace cast flickering shadows along the walls and
Mikes face. He sat slumped in the wing backed chair trying to get his
thoughts together. He did not notice that he was not alone!
He reached down and took his shoes off so he could warm his feet by the
fire. He felt so cold and clammy. He did not see the hulking figure behind
him. All he heard was -- 'WHACK!' --- 'WHACK!"
He looked down at his feet and they looked funny to him. He bent down to
look closer and suddenly blood gushed up and splattered his shirt front! He
was not frightened, only puzzled on why his feet were bleeding.

Two hours later, Mrs. Carter wondered why her husband was staying in the den
so long and she went to see. When she opened the door, she just stood there
taking in the scene. There was Mike, laying on the floor in front of the
fireplace. His feet had cleanly been cut off at the ankles. One foot had
been stuffed in his mouth and the other up his rectum - his eyes were glazed
and seemed to be looking at her.
Just before she screemed, she thought she heard an evil laugh somewhere in
the night --- "hahahahahahahahahahah!"
Later, she forgot to report that to the police!

the gruesome, loathing, grisly story yesterday, the Mighty Sysops haven't

the Apollo BBS are running scared this day; everyone wanting to cancel

"How will we ever make a living?" moans Cliff as he puts the receiver
back.
Sandy tries to sooth poor Cliffy Sysop. "Now, now, there. Something
will happen soon, I'm sure." She looks toward her weapons stash and smiles.
"No dead person will be allowed to roam the streets and scare my family,"
Ms Sysop thinks to herself. "The time has come to take the Bull by the Balls
