Your wasting your time here. They do not want to see the truth in your
statements - they are more interested in telling you why things are the way
they are and how good it is - for instance, telling you why the Savings &
Loans go belly up - in the mean time, forgetting that they in reality, did
go belly up for whatever reason! I would suggest you try to talk about just
one subject at a time and try to converse with them - but even at that, they
will never agree with one thing you say! It is beyond them! They don't want
things to change! Why they won't even admit that we could HAVE a better
world! They are bent towards making themselves seem superior and you a fool!
No one is a fool here - each has good valid points and has the right to
express them - but how about just a good conversation on any subject - how
about bending a little? Rod has some excellent points - why not listen to
him at least a little bit and see what he's saying? Discuss it - dissagree
if you wish - but he is no fool! Hell, if just a few of the things he talks
about were incorporated into our society, it would certainly make it better!

I really do wish that you would come off of your high horse long enough to
realize that there are people other than yourself that matter, too. It just
gets so boring watching you stuffing yourself with Ego Flakes, and treating
everyone else's opinions as if they are dirt under your steel-tipped boots.
If character assassination were a punishable crime, your body would be
thrashing around in an electric chair right about now. You crave self-
appreciation much in the way that a junkie craves heroin. The only
difference is that you can afford to feed your habit (the computer). Take
away the element of insulting others behind the safety of your monitor, and
you would realize that you are no better, smarter, greater, wonderful, or
God-like, than the rest of us. Calling one of Rod's relatives a dolt without
even meeting him? I hope you are not a religious-minded person, because you
are going to have to fess up for some serious misjudgement calls come J-Day.

Date: 09/19/88 Time: 23:19:48

That is my Opus/Fidonet (primarily OPUS) Point node number. That is sorta
like a Compuserve number. In detail:

            My real number is 15:1:114/18.8
          15 = region, (country)
1 = zone in region (Southwest, I believe)
          114 = Phoenix Arizona
18 = The 18th board in Phx, in this case The Software Engineers
BBS
           .8 = My Point number

O.k. So you live in New York and you want to send me some mail. You
would log onto your local Fidonet/OPUS/or any board that supports
'conference' mail. You would want to nter a message. It would ask the
persons name, and node number, and point node (if available). In this case
it is, so this message would only be sean by me. If you were to put in
114/18, every board it went to on its way down here would be able to see it
(public message), unless you entered as private mail. So, in about 2 to 5
days, not sure how long, it would eventually get here and come to me. Now
here is where it gets confusing. There are over 2,000 (atleast)
Fidonet/OPUS/Conference mail boards world wide. 800+ in the U.S. There are
regions, zones, nodes, and point nodes. The point node actually means the
'.' in .8 . Now you and I get on Apollo, with our name and password. I can
also get on 114/18 (The Software Engineers BBS) like that also (cont)

Message: 4263
Author: $ Chris Neal
Category: Chit-Chat
Subject: Jim/(cont)
Date: 09/19/88 Time: 23:32:13

BUT the .8 allows this:

You get a lot of files, consisting of editors, packers, unpackers, batch
files and so on.... So I set up my batch files, editors, disk (hard disk
directories) and so on.... When it is done and working all I have to do is
execute a batch file and my system will:

Call 114/18.0 Known as the 'BOSS NODE'
Enter my Point node number, password and down load all of my files that
I requested it to, get all the mail in the conferences I belong to (like
SIGS on this system) there are about 120 national Conferences and about 30
local ones, and upload any replies to mail I got the last time I did this.
AND ALL I DID WAS EXECUTE ONE FILE! Once it is set up, and working right,
there is so much that you can do, and it is very fast!!! For instance on
most boards, includeing when I log on 'normally' to The Soft. Eng. BBS, the
more I download the more I have to upload, well with a point node, it is so
fast that It doesn't count against me. The features of this 'NETWORK' are
unbelievable(sp).... If you haven't tried it, you should. You can talk to
people all over the world about just about anything you want! If anybody
wants more info let me know and I will try to get it to you somehow. I think
it would be neet if Apollo went to the OPUS Software, about 60% more people
could get on in a 24 hour period on a BUSY day. Hope this helps!

Socialism is not "sharing." Forcing people to give up their property is not
only not the same as them doing it voluntarily, it is completely different.
It is stealing, and just because the government does it doesn't mean it is
OK. It also doesn't mean it's popular; I understand some people don't even
pay their taxes, so I don't see how such a person would be willing to give
up all of their property because the government tells them it's "sharing."

In a nutshell, my goal is to help educate the human race to the
fact that all people, not only from this bleak planet but throughout
the universe, are all kin.
I had a death experience in 1969. At the time it was the most
frightening event that ever happened to me. At present I consider it
the most profound and beautiful experience I ever had.
This life, this planet is but a small bit in eternity. I just
wonder why life here is not a beautiful experience as it could be.
We, the human race just do not have the mentality to make it so at
present.
Yes, before the death experience I was content, happy, if you
will.....but it was like I came back and slowly realized that we live
in a weird and scary place.
I am not for any system. It would be so much easier if we
humans realized we were related, and shared. It is that simply. If
life here could be like a big family there would be no need for
government other than for the necessary lines of supply and
communications.
I do not like the monopoly game we are playing, simply because
there are too many poor. That is my only reason. Some other
countries probably have it worse but that is still no excuse to not
seek improvements. Rod
P.S. I DO NOT WANT A SYSTEM THAT DEMANDS ANYTHING.

Trotsky was instrumental in bringing the horrors of Marxism to power, he

Hey........Guys (and gals)

No kidding, there is a certain sameness to all your political arguments.
It's all the establishment's fault, and no taking the blame for electing
such a mediocre bunch of politicians in the first place. Since I'm a
Californio I can't take credit for the mess you all have made here in Ariz.
but nobody seems to have voted for the bad guys, and those who did vote,
threw their votes away by backing the Social Conservatives or the
Neo-Leninists. Come on, let's hear a real rationale for your beliefs
without degenerating into mud slinging and name calling!

As for the real estate tiff on the other board, I'm sure Roddy had a perfect
right to believe that no one should own land at all (except maybe him?) but
I can tell you that it doesn't work the other way either. My dad escaped
from Hungary in 1955, just ahead of the Soviet troops, to get away from the
kind of government Roddy seems to want. And, my Mom crossed the border
illegally the year before to get away from the food riots in Mexico City. I
don't suppose what we've got for government here in this country is perfect,
but it's so far ahead of whatever is in second place that there's no
comparison.

We may be the 'Freest', but we are not totally free. As time passes
we become less and less freer.
I doubt that I would express my real feelings about the situation
and plausible solutions in America because I would be investigated by the
FBI. To be sure, they take what us free Americans say seriously. As an FBI
agent once told me ...... you have the right to say whatever you want, BUT
we have the right to investigate you.

I agree with Jeannie, to a point. We may not be perfect, but we are way
ahead of whoever's in second place.
As to the countries Jim mentioned, I guess it all depends on your
conception of freedom. Sure, I guess they are more free to indulge
themselves in such questionable "benefits" as legalized drugs and
pornography, etc., but perhaps freedom FROM such stuff is a quality that
many of us appreciate in the good old U.S.A.
And Gary, I think the question was, since you are so bored with our
mediocrity, what do you have in mind that will stimulate us to higher
things? Have at it, by all means!

Tidbits from the latest National Review:

According to a current poll, 55 percent of the public thinks Dukakis could
do more for small business than Bush. However, small-business owners them-
selves favor Bush over Dukakis by 78 to 17 percent.

'The rich have gotten richer, the poor have gotten poorer, and those in
the middle--and that means most of us--have gotten squeezed.' In his Labor
Day speech Michael Dukakis pledged to end a Republican era he said has
 benefited only "the priveledged few."
Census Bureau data for 1987, released at the end of August, tell a very
different story. Median family income in 1987 was $30,853, compared to
 only $21,023 in 1980.
Real family income changed little between 1973 and 1978, but there was
a precipitous decline from the second year of the Carter Administration
until the economic expansion began in late 1982. The improvement in 1987
means that U.S. family income has risen 11.8 percent since 1982, the
sharpest and most sustained improvement in twenty years. The middle 3/5ths
of the population received 51.8 percent of total national income last year,
a proportion that has been virtually unchanged since such statistics began
 in 1947.

Subject: Tidbit2

The use of family-income data masks the effects of declining family size,
as well as gains made by unmarried people. Thus, while real mean family
income is reported to have increased 10.6 percent since 1980, real per-
capita income rose 14.4 percent over the same period.
Simularly, focusing on pre-tax rather than after-tax income skews the
data. The after-tax purchasing power of the poorest 20 percent of families
has increased more than the rise in their pre-tax incomes would indicate,
because of the tax reductions since 1981.
Poverty is still a problem, but not nearly so pervasive a problem as the
official numbers suggest. The poverty rate was officially 13.5 percent
last year, down 11.7 percent from 1983. But failure to count the $146
billion of in-kind benefits distributed by the Federal Government last
year means that as many as 12.1 million Americans are erroneously
identified as poor. Most dramatically affected by this calculation are the
elderly poor, whose poverty rate plummets from 12.2 percent to a mere 2.1
percent when these benefits are taken into account.

From 'Holidays in Hell' by P.J. O'Rourke

"I didn't think you could wreck a Central American country. I thought
they came pre-wrecked from the time of the fall of classical Mayan
civilization in 900 A.D. I didn't think you could make things more
depressing than they are in, say, El Salvador or the slums of Colon,
Panama. But the Sandinistas had done it. And the Nicaraguans were losing
that big, rude, cynical Latin American laugh. They were starting to get
the dry humor of perfect despair that the Poles and Czechs and Russians
have. We would pass by a burned-out factory, and our driver would say,
with a deadpan face, "This belongs to the people now.'"

Being in Mexico was not the point, the point was at the end of the icepick
that killed him. A state that has the power to enforce a ban on the
accumulation of private property MUST therefore be all powerful. A state
that is all powerful must be administered by someone, and since the
individual citizen has already been defined as too low an entity to even be
allowed to peacefully accumulate property, that citizen will be represented
by a leader class. Once this Utopia is set in motion there is only one end
which can come from it. Those who earnestly promoted it will be among the
first of its victims, since their convictions will not be those of the all
powerful State, and they will soon become its enemies.

Rod was aware that his neck was aching, but he had been so tired of late, he
had just dozed off in front of his computer. He had been there over an hour,
missing his turn on Apollo. Also, in the back of his mind, he knew it had
started raining and the sound of the patters on the window were soothing to
his tired body and he continued to doze.

Suddenly, some soft noise disturbed him and he jerked fully awake, sitting
up stright in the chair. He looked around the room and saw Joe, his neighbor
from across the street sitting in the other computer chair. He too had
fallen asleep and was snoring softly. But Rod knew that hadn't been the
noise he'd heard. He reached up and switched off the light and peered out
the rain splattered window.
It took a few seconds for his eyes to become acustomed to the dark, but he
could make out a hulking figure just coming into his side patio headed for
the door. The figure looked vaguely familier but for some reason, he became
terrified and backed into the cornor, concealing himself.
The door rattled slightly and then slowly opened. A stentch permeated the
air and Rod had to put his hand over his nose for fear he'd vomit last
nights supper!
A sudden burst of lightening silouetted the figure from behind and Rod could
see he held a huge axe in his right hand and was slowly coming into the
room.
Rod was so frightened, he cowered into the cornor and put his face towards
the wall - knowing his life was soon going to end. (Cont.)

Hours seemed to have passed and the rain had stopped to a drizzle. Rod
finally had the nerve to lift his head and look around. The door was still
open and the rain had made a messy puddle on the floor.
Rod chuckled to himself. "Man, I must be loosing it! That was just one of my
friends playing a practical joke - trying to scare the wits out of me this
time of night. Boy did they succeed!"
He got up from the cornor and realized he was soaked with sweat and chuckled
again "And they really did succeed!
He went over and turned on the light. He caught a glimps of himself in the
window pane and he appeared red.
"Hmmm. That's funny??" And then he looked down at himself.
He was covered with blood! His knees almost went out from under him. He turn
and looked at Joe and then his knees did buckle and he landed with a thud.
He couldn't believe his eyes - there sat Joe, covered with gore and his head
that had been a few minutes before, laying on his chest in sleep, was gone
and a steady stream of bright red blood spurted out of the hole in his
throat.
Rod did spend the next few minutes loosing his supper!
He finally looked around and found poor Joe's head! It was on the computer
keyboard and oozing blood down between the keys!
A horrible thought struck Rod! "That was meant for me! It was supposed to be
my head on the keyboard, not Joe's!"
He started to shiver. "If that's the truth, then I know who is going to be
next! It's got to be ...........

the next person who falls asleep at the computer waiting to log on
to Apollo."
Rod knew how the Apollo SySop felt about his system. He remembers
times when the A.S.S. would change into a twisted, agonizing, grimacing
figure when news of BBS users falling asleep reached his ears.
The thought that the A.S.S. was on the prowl frightened Rod. His
mind was trying to think who the users were that had a tendancy to fall
asleep at the computer. The sweat stung his eyes and the stench of what used
to be Joe made it hard to concentrate. Who, Rod thought, who could possibly
be next?
Rod covers the corpse of Joe, grabs his odd colored rain shoes, his
San Francisco Fish Net Rain Coat, his paper mache' rain hat, and rushes
out into the dark stormy night. He must go to the nearest BBS user that he
knows who falls asleep at the computer.

...... in front of James Hawley's house, he paused to look around. It was so
dark he couldn't see much, but there was a dim light coming from what Rod
knew was James's computer room and he started towards it.
"God! James stays up so late building those Thangs. Here it is 4:AM and he's
still up. I must warn him!"
Rod got nearer the house and could see the door was slightly ajar and his
neck hairs stood stright up! He made haste and threw open the door. The
sight that faced him made him sick again. Poor James was slumped over his
computer. There was so much blood, it has oozed down and made a gorey puddle
on the floor and right in the middle lay James's entire arm - cut off neatly
at the shoulder!
Rod heard a moan and realized that James was not dead and he rushed to his
side, lifting up his head.
James moaned again but managed to say "Help me Rod! Get me to the hospital
quick!"
"Yes my friend. You'll be alright. Just hang in there!"
Rod took off his rain coat and gently layed it on the floor. He held his
breath and picked up James's arm and layed in on the coat, coving it up and
putting it under his arm. He reached over with his other strong arm and
helped James to stand.
"Here. Hold on to me the best you can. We'll get you to the hospital as soon
as possible!" Rod said choaking back tears.
They struggled down the stairs, but finally made it to the van. Rod helped
James lay down and noticed he was going into shock. Cont.

He layed the rain coat down beside him with it's grizzly occupant and rushed
around to get the van started.
HE broke all speed limits getting to the hospital. This time he wished a
policeman had stopped him so he could make better time with an escort.
HE finally got to the emergency entrance and a couple of doctors were
standing around having a cigarette brake. When they saw Rod's face behind
the windshield, they threw them down and rushed over with a stretcher. Rod
jumped out and threw open the back of the van. James was still moaning and
Rod let out a sigh of relief that he was still alive. In a matter of
minutes, James was on the operating table!
Rod waited for hours and finally, when the sun was high in the sky, the
doctor came out and said to him "Your friend is going to be alright. We
successfully sewed back his arm. It was a clean cut, so we had no problems.
In fact, his arm will be much better than before! We made it Bionic!"
"Bionic?' Rod Questioned. "You mean like that series on TV - the Million
Dollar man?"
"Yes, but it will be better than that. Anyway, why don't you go on home now.
You look like you could use some sleep. Have no fear, your friend will
survive!"
Rod thought to himself "Sleep hell! I know who's going to get it next and I
WILL stop it this time!
HE ran out and jumped in the van and headed for .........
