OH! When was JT 'a fairly nice person'? I don't recall and have been here
over a year! I will admit to reading and enjoying some of his posts, but
lately he hasn't posted any of value - just critisizm and sarcastic, mundane
remarks. Guess he's saving all his good stuff for his job - leaving us with
his garbage! See you later. =*--ANN--*=

Subject: Opening A Store
Date: 09/09/88 Time: 20:19:11

I'm planning on opening an independent record store somewhere in northern
Arizona sometime within the next year. My design (theoretically) provides
for a 97% (or more) pilfer-proof shopping environment, without all of those
expensive security "walls" that do nothing but beep, which gives the
shoplifter the instruction to RUN LIKE HELL!

Anyhow, on to my serious question. Which is better, to enter a fixed-rental
rate agreement, or enter a profit-sharing rental rate agreement? I've seen
heads being beaten into other heads on this subject, and nothing has been
said to sway my opinion one way or another. Suffice to say, where I plan on
opening my record store there is high traffic, and very little competition
(within the entire town!). For my type of smaller record store, would it be
better to enter a strip mall, or attempt to locate into a mall or mini-mall?
If the venture is successful, I plan on either expanding the store to carry
videos, or to possibly rent an adjacent piece of property and run the video
store as a seperate entity. I don't want to go into too much detail, as this
plan represents my current life's ambitions, and I don't want to lose it to
someone with more money and big ears.

Anyone who desires to do away with private property (as your 'a square
mile free for each person' scheme would) is a socialist. There are many
socialist schemes which may or may not be identified with existing
governments. The only thing they all have in common is a pre-destined
descent into failure and misery since they are based on a view of human
nature which is incompatible with human nature as it exists.
It makes as much sense as designing a utopian environment for a species of
animal which does not exist and then killing hundreds of millions of
existing livestock in an attempt to force them to mutate into something
compatible with the new environment. This is what Marxism has done, only
with people.

What we're arguing about, really, is whether a landlord and tenant have the
right to enter into any agreement, and whether it is rational to criticize
them when they wouldn't have entered into the agreement unless they expected
some benefit.
This says nothing about whether in a particular instance, it is better to go
with the profit-based rent or flat rate.
It's my impression that the best place for a record store is in a mall, even
if a small one. The strip malls don't get as many impulsive walk-ins. But
whether the advantage of a mall is enough to justify the added cost in your
case, I don't know. You might talk to Kimber Lanning, former Zia's
employe, who (last I knew) was running a record store called Stinkweeds (or
something like that, ask Zak). I don't know if she was succesful.

to have a smooth running environment at this time. Perhaps we never will
but the voilent motion in the universe will decide our fate even if we sleep

Too bad we couldn't have a fun world while life exists but that is
directly attributble to our current stupidity.

Yeah - I remember Robert Walker. Wasn't too fond of him though but have you
seen his son in a few things on TV? He ABSOLUTELY looks like his father.
It's eerie. John Garfield - oh how I loved him and still drool when I see
his old movies. He dripped sex appeal. Ralph was right about him being
ruined in the 'Witch Hunts' and he died fairly young. Have not read his life
story. Yes, George Sanders comitted suicide. He was Za Za's fourth husband I
think. She claims he was the only man she ever loved.
I can't comment on Grable's decadence here - to sexually lurid. The stars
lives are sort of my hobby over the years - have read most of the biography
books - missed June Haver's though. Did know she went into a convent! Of all
the books - Judy Garland's life was the worse - saddest. Not that she was
decadent - people used her badly from childhood. She litterly died on a
toilet seat - her body simply just giving up life! It always amazes me how
a lot of them turn out so badly with so much beauty, stardom and the good
life. One would think they'd be some happiness in there. Of all that I read
- Lana Turner probably enjoyed stardom to the fullest and still plays the
part of a glamourous star. See you. =*--ANN--*=

.... new amusement park called 'America's Drug Merry-go-round and Zoo'!
Here's the scene: We are now going to spend $5.9 billion on our war
against drugs! That's a ludicrous figure since it's probably only a
third of what the profits are from drugs! It's also ludicrous when you
think where that money could better be used - Social Security -
Medicare - to pay off some of the National debt - the poor - the poor
in other countries - medical research on cancer - heart disease, etc.

And now - they have added the 'mighty feared' Death Penalty! Whoa! That
should really scare um' to death alright! But for the life of me, I
can't figure out why a drug related murder is any worse than an other
murder! We have the death penalty now and 99% of the murderers just sit
it out in prison awaiting their eventual parole.

But I'll have to admit they are gonna save us big bucks here - they are
going to "deny 'many' federal benefits to anyone convicted of two (2)
narcotics offenses"!! Boyee - that'll really stop them! They'll feel so
terrible with all those millions in profits from drugs but they can't
get their rightful pittance from the government and horror beyond
horrors, can't be buried in Arlington National Cemetery! That'll deter
any potential drug runner right there! What 'inhumane' punishment!

Cont.
That $5.3 billion dollar figure is only the icing however. It doesn't
include the trials and re-trials of these drug murderers, offenders,
dealers - nor the cost of housing them in prison for years - the cost
of new prisons that will have to be build to accommodate them - nor the
extra narcodic agents/police that will have to be hired - All, may I
add, coming out of the tax payer's pocket! This situation reminds me of
the old saying - "Like pounding sand down a rat hole"! Futile and a
waste of time!

But the very most ludicrous thing of all about this is -- it's the
people that want drugs - buys it and uses it! Take away the dealers
market and he'd be out of business. No one is forcing anyone to take
drugs. It's all made to sound as if we have no choices. Obviously, they
do not intend to give it up! So therefore, the only sane thing to do in
an insane situation is to give them what they want! Legalize Drugs! It
would cost us a fraction of the money used to fight it. We could grow
our own (the country) and make that profit - we could open drug
rehabilitation clinics - free to those that want to kick the habit.
(better than prisons) We could charge a small fee for said drugs so
that most could afford it without a life of crime to feed their habit.
We could flood the media with warnings of the dangers of drug use, just
like we do drunk driving et al. Isn't it about time for this?

Take all your reservations about remedying pollution problems in a
Libertarian political system and multiply them by two. Now you have
approximately the current situation with government acting as a go-between
and all powerful arbitrator of claims. When a company somehow loses favor
with a government department and faces legal action it still has a myriad of
options available to get itself back in favor with the department and get
off easy. If all else fails their lawyers just threaten to call the
government's bluff on the dubious legality of enforcing rules as if they
were laws and the whole thing is settled for a tiny fraction of the damages
originally sought.
When the real injured party is procecuting a polluter the incentive is to
recover damages and prevent further incidents, when the government does it
the only incentive is some nice publicity. If the government actually did
anything to curb pollution a lot of staff and funding would be lost.
