that on to Sandy. Some sales person I believe got her stuck on the idea
portables need alignment, so therefore she should buy at least a two year

Sounds like bull$hit to me. I think the mechanism positions the light beam
according to the signal that's being reflected from the disk (unlike a
stepper motor), so I don't see what "alignment" would accomplish.

Well, if it isn't pointing straight up I guess it can have trouble. If it
gets dirty and doesn't move smoothly it could have trouble. I have one of
the very early portables and I've not had trouble with it -- took it on
several motorcycle trips, car trips. Had it at work. It is now my 'home

I abused my Diskman a lot. I used it on everything from cars to bicycles
to Jeeps. I bought the extra warranty with it because I knew I would be
rough on it, but I never needed it, and wouldn't pay extra for it if I had
it to do over again. They also make portables with better internal
suspension now than they did when I got mine. I have seen a slightly thicker
version of the Diskman which is designed to withstand use in a car without
skipping.

My D-5 (the original portable) runs fine in a car as long as it is on the

work as well.

Some CD players use a single beam laser, others use a 3 beam laser. In the
3 beam system, the central beam reads the data from the disc, while the
other two beams maintain proper alignment and focus. One would assume that
this would be a superior system to single beam, but this has not panned out.
It is possible that a beam weakened by being split into three is no better
than a strong, single beam.

I've owned two portable CD players --- a Sony D10, and my current unit, a
Sony D555. Given the torture they've been through, I would say that
knocking them out of alignment is nearly impossible. All portables mistrack
rather easily, however. Sony makes a car mounting device for their
portables that incorporates fluid filled dampers --- it seems to work well.

I finally picked up a CD copy of Benny Goodman's famous 1938 concert in
Carnegie Hall and am struck, on first listening, by three things.

First is the triumph of music over technology. This concert was recorded
with a single microphone, hung above the stage. The signal was then piped
(the liner notes don't say how, but it must have been by landline) to
Columbia's main New York studio where it was recorded to disk.

As you might expect from a 1938 recording, there's a considerable amount of
pop and hiss, the instruments are somewhat out of balance because they were
not individually mic'ed, and the equalization seems to shift unpredictably
throughout the recording. I suspect this latter problem is caused by
efforts to reduce especially objectionable noise in the original recording.

Despite these problems this is widely recognized as one of the greatest
recordings ever made. I have to agree.

My agreement comes, in large part, from the second factor that impressed me,
the triumph of music over ego.

Even with just the Benny Goodman Trio of the time, consisting of Goodman,
Teddy Wilson at the piano, and Gene Krupa on drums, there was an enormous
possibility of egos clashing. Each was a major power in the jazz world and,
of course, each later went on to lead bands of their own. When you add
Lionel Hampton, turning the Trio into a Quartet, there is even greater
potential for a competitiveness that could tear the music apart. And we
haven't even begun to discuss the "side" players who also appeared in this
concert, among them Count Basie, Harry James, Bobby Hackett, Johnny Hodges,
and Lester Young.

Such gatherings of superstars are not uncommon today, the annual Prince's
Trust concerts in Britain come to mind, but more often than not, when Eric
Clapton, Paul McCartney, Elton John play together, accompanied by the usual
cadre of minor players, the result is a mish-mash. There is, no doubt,
some fine playing in there, but who can hear it?

By contrast the musicians at the 1938 concert complement each other,
providing support and emphasis when needed, taking the spotlight when
appropriate. *MTV Unplugged* gives today's musicians some opportunity to
practice this kind of music-making, but most fall far short of achieving any
kind of notoriety, much less the kind anyone will care about half a century
from now.

Added together, these two elements are enough to make this a truly
remarkable recording. In the end, however, what truly puts this recording
over the top is, simply, Gene Krupa. When I think of the great drummers of
the rock era Ginger Baker (for his technique, especially with Cream), Ringo
Starr (although not a great technician, there is a certain something in the
Beatles's recordings that I think can be attributed to Starr) and, lately,
Charlie Watts (for his versatility in both the rock and jazz worlds) come to
mind.

None of these can stand up to Krupa. He's described in the liner notes as
"metronomic." And that he is, but he's also much, much more. The anchor he
provides for the others' solos and the ways he enhances those solos,
sometimes seeming to actually lead the other players and direct their
playing through subtle shifts in his own emphasis, is nothing short of
phenomenal. With this performance alone Krupa proves he was not merely an
unmatched drummer, but a magnificent musician.

This is a wonderful recording, one I wish I'd purchased years ago.

It was quite good in places, and fell down in others. Inconsistent, I guess.

I saw "the making of" part, but got too sleepy to hang on for the actual
piece. I set up the VCR to record the darn thing and, in the process of
routing a stereo signal to the VCR, forgot to set the channel correctly. I
got the audio, but not the video. Haven't listened to it yet.

It was intriguing to hear McCartney relate all the small details of his
childhood and how they were worked into the piece: Sunning on the grave
markers; his father's trumpet playing; his school's motto.

I really liked the idea of having a school "roll of honor," where alumni who
had gone on to make a mark in the world were listed. Every school should
have one of those. Or at least every school that has alumni deserving of
being on such a roll.

Did anyone else catch the new Michael Jackson video last night? I liked
both it and the music a great deal. And one complemented the other very

had the best morphing I've ever seen. Remarkable stuff.

OTOH, I think the piece was weakened considerably by the solo dancing stuff
at the end. While there's no doubt that Jackson is one of dance's foremost

It was touted as being excellent. My opinion ... in parts it was absolutely
fantastic - the special effects were mind boggling. Michael looked terrific
- he has obviously gained some weight and looks much better. His face looks
like Diana Ross - but then that's what he's been trying for - but the song
itself was nothing - no lingering melody that one can hum and some of his
antics left us puzzled. It wasn't really dancing in parts but more violent
movements. I'll never figure out why he 'plays' with himself! Maybe someone
can enlighten me on that. We also never did figure out why he took a bat to
the car's windows. The entire video was violent and I suppose had a message

In this morning's paper - on the front page was an article about that video.
Michael appologized for it - mainly the masterbation and the violence and it
has now been cut out. Soon, you will not be able to see the original.
I guess the switchboards were lit up like a Xmas tree after it played for
the first time with complaints about the above. I am no prude and certainly
believe that there should be very little censureship - but he has a great
following of children and I don't feel this video should be seen without
parental consent. I wouldn't want my 6 year old seeing it - mainly because
of the violence! *>>> ANN O. <<<*

The original should have been kept intact ALSO and shown later at night for
those that want to see such things.
My opinion - the violence and masterbation were not entertaining, classy or
attractive. And it certainly wasn't dancing, nor was it a listenable song.
No one moves like Michael, but he should have watched a few of his moves in

After watching it completely I have come to a few conclusions. First, the
song is just sort of regular pop. No big deal. The beginning seemed out of
place, just an excuse to use the kid from _Home Alone_ and "Norm" from
"Cheers". Also, the kids said "eat my shorts" which seemed pretty rude and
unlike Michael Jackson's other videos. The best part about the video was
the computer generated transformation sequences. The dancing during the
video was ok, nothing I haven't seen from him before. The ending dance
sequence didn't make any sence. By the way, I didn't think the crotch
grabbing stuff was masturbatory, just a dance move that he and Madonna do
frequently. The ending smashing of glass and dancing a capella had nothing
to do with the song, the beginning of the video, and didn't really stand on
it's own as a statement since no one seems to know what the heck he is
trying to say! The screams, mixed with the panther sounds, seemed to be
parallaling the video transformations in the way you could hear the human
screams and then the animal scream mixed in and then taking over the audio
at the end. I also read the article in the paper this morning and Michael's
answer about the ending is that his violence was symbolic to the animal like
nature of a panther. Ok, but what the heck does that have to do with the
video or song?! Overall, the whole thing has been hyped to death. It's an
ok song, the video that will remain from the long version will be shown on
MTV for a few months and then disappear (my prediction) and this album will
not out sell his previous one. Michael Jackson is on the way out, I'm
afraid (well, for him I am afraid. I don't really mind).

Well, I didn't have time to go through the last 200 messages, so I onlly
read the last 20 or so. I *thought* Matlock was Mark Adkins--his use of the
term "self aggrandizement" gave him away. Thornbob turned into a cat? He
never seemed the cutesy-name type...

Hey, thanks Catbob! I will be going away again real soon, for your
satisfaction. ROD, your posts are still as groovy as ever. I really like
that saying, "If you believe in forever, then life is just a one-night
stand." Something to think about...sometimes!

Regardless of its origins, the HIV virus has spread to the heterosexual
community. Dwelling on the origin of any disease is counterproductive and
pointless. In this case, the only thing you'll accomplish is inflaming
people. (No pun intended).
What are you trying to get at? My guess would be:

1) Due to the origins of AIDS we should do nothing to find a cure.
Homosexuals and drug users, by their very nature, deserve nothing less than
a slow, painful death.

2) The spread of AIDS to the heterosexual community is part of vast global
conspiracy perpetrated by spiteful gays.

Is your hatred of homosexuals so great that you're blinded to the fact
there is a face behind every AIDS statistic? If we took your "they brought
it upon themselves" mentality to its logical conclusion we'd also have to
turn our backs on alcoholics, teenagers with unwanted pregnancies and others
who have fallen by the wayside due to bad judgement calls. Is the solution
to ostracize those who fall well below our society's definition of
"productive"?
I saw no possible solutions offered. Only rehash. Do we really have
the time to rehash the past?

What do you people think about able-bodied individuals who collect
welfare every month going back a generation?
I read an article in the Republic this week about one state's solution.
Basically the total amount of the welfare check is lowered and families can
then earn "bonuses" as long as the children are in school and are receiving
proper medical attention.
I think this program is a good start. Call me crazy but I'd go so far
as to say any able-bodied welfare recipient should be required to perform
volunteer work for so many hours per week. (Three hours a day, five days a
week for example). Highway repair, garbage scavenging, building repair,
etc. A national "self help" program that would benefit the entire nation.
Any comments, alternate solutions, etc. are more than welcome.

RE: "should I insist that my partner gets tested for AIDS with a mandatory 6
month waiting priod?"

Not a bad idea(is this the correct word or is it ideal)! But tought to do if
you are suppose to trust the person you are going to marry.

The more often a person is tested for AIDS or anything where a needle is
made to slide into an artery in your body, the more chance you have of
testing positive for the HIV virus or other maladies.

This procedure is usually done in a hospital, a building that is full of

The last thing I want to do is to drag the AIDS topic into yet another
forum, but I was sorry to hear that we've lost Freddie Mercury. I bought
another Queen album today in his honor.

I have a few already. I think my favorite is "A Day at the Races" (which
Jane bought for me). I had to agree with the (probably tongue-in-cheek)
album-cover comment on "Tie Your Mother Down":

"A Night at the Opera" is mine, but "Day at the Races" is a close second.
The sound of both is somewhat similar.
