Phew. Good thing I didn't accept the invitation to the GT, I would have had
to sue for false advertising. I've seen H&M many times, but driving to
Cliff's in the middle of the night to see it instead of the advertised film
would not have been fun.

Speaking of them - my husband use to do something that was funny - to the
by-stander at least. There was a state park's outhouse on a major highway in
Wyoming that butted up against a hill. Him and a buddy rigged up a radio
with two mikes - one mike they taped underneath the outhouse seat, out of
sight - then they would go up on this hill and hide, waiting for some woman
to go in. Preferably an older lady. They would give her time to get her
undies down and seated and then one of them would yell into the mike -
- "Help! Help! I'm trapped down here" - or much worse I suspect. Nine times
out of ten, the ladies would run out of the place with their pants down
around their knees! I know I would! Unfortunately, one time they called the
police and that put a squelch to their little game. I hate outhouses and am
always sure there is something evil lerking in there that will take a big
bite out of me someday. Guess I've seen too many movies and/or have too big
of an imagation. I just know that Godzilla at least must be in there.

Yes, I certainly would be upset to have my house burnt down because of
something that happened 100 years ago. I did nothing then and do not do
anything now to fan the fires of prejudice. I respect people for what they
are, not their skin color. If I see a black person that is acting like an
idiot, then I will treat him like he is acting. NOT make concessions because
he is black. Ditto anybody. That is my opinion of NOT being prejudiced. They
have fought for their rights (and I do give thanks to King for a lot of it)
and have won many that is rightfully their's to begin with. They too have
'Come a long way baby' - if you get my point.
Re: King ... until he came along, I suppose you could say I was prejudiced -
coming from a family that was from Texas, I heard it all against the blacks.
(Niggers of course) I never give it much thought. Went to an all white
school until high school, so I knew nothing about them except what I was
taught. I happened to turn into his famous speech that day and was
overwhelmed at what he was saying and opened my eyes to what was happening -
had been happening. I felt ashamed at my own feelings - the 'nigger' jokes I
kept telling, etc. If he did nothing but open many people's eyes to the
facts, then I respect him fully regardless of his sex life or any other
scandel I've heard. As far as I'm concerned, he's right up there with Jack
and Bobby Kennedy and you know how I feel about them! -=*) ANN (*=-

You bet it was me with Donnelly! I am, and always have been a strong
believer in organized labor and in the overall good they have done in this
country, but I am not blind to the inherent problems within some labor
organizations, and this grocery clerks union is one of the worst.
I have heard from many of their own members (and ex-members) that the
"union" (for the most part company unions) is never there when someone
really needs them. File a grievance over some management injustice and you
are as likely to lose your job as get anything resolved.
Now this same "champion of the oppressed" is trying to restrain a business
from coming into the valley and jumping into a very competitive market with
a somewhat different concept of marketing. Fact is, if we can look behind
the facade of what they are saying, is that no retail grocery clerk's job is
in danger. The only thing that is in danger is the featherbedding high level
income of the union officials. Smith's pays at least the same, and in many
cases, more than union scale to their employees. I have had occasion to be
present at 3 Smith's grand openings recently, (1 in Cottonwood and the 2
here on the 1st), and have talked with many of Smith's workers, all of whom
spoke very highly of Smith's as a great place to work, and wonderful people
to work for.
In this particular case, I have two observations to make. Well, maybe 3. 1.
The effort of the union to discourage people from shopping by picketing the
stores was a total failure. 2. The union did little more than make a
laughing stock of themselves. and 3, The million bucks they claim is going
into the boycott effort is members money wasted that could be better used.

The FBI hasn't opened their files. Actually, one of King's right hand men
and close associates, Rev. Abernathy, wrote a book, one chapter of which
deals rather extensively with Dr. King's sexual exploits. That received it's
share of media attention a couple of weeks ago.

Smith's took out a continuous, four-page ad in today's Republic ("B"
section) which contrasted the prices of about 300 different items between
Smith's and six other supermarket chains: Frys, ABCO, Safeway, Smittys,
Bashas, and Albertsons.

They also contrasted the grand-totals, which ranged from $606.64 for
Smith's, to $695.85 for Safeway.

This results, in the best case comparison (from Smith's point of view), in a
total price difference on 300 items of $95.21
This means that, on average, Smith's saves you about 32 cents
(31.7) per item. Of course, this is Smith's best case comparison.
The worst case comparison, between Smith's and (of course) Albertsons,
resulted in an average savings of slightly more than one cent per item
(1.13)
Averaging the prices of its competitors, Smith's saved about 22 cents per
item over its competitors.

Of course, Smith's, having done a certain amount of research and preparation
for their grand opening, most likely lowered prices on items which they
planned to feature in the comparison, and perhaps chose items which would
offer the greatest opportunity for contrast. But it's still good while it
lasts. No doubt Smith's will not take out any ads after they have attracted
a steady customer base, when their prices will creep up to join the rest.

The grand opening reception was far greater than even Smith's management

area shoppers are satisfying their curiosity and taking advantage of the
good buys there. I'm sure that, once they are established in the valley, the
hulabaloo will settle down and they will be more accessible. I'll wait until
Jan. 1, when the store at 43rd Ave. & Cactus is scheduled to open, to do any
serious shopping there. The two they have now are just too far out of my way

According to an article I read about a week ago in the business section of

proces in the areas in which they are already established. This would seem
to indicate a more permanent policy than just grand opening specials to
attract a customer base. We can at least hope so, and look forward to a
general reduction in our grocery bills. (Now if only we could get a cheaper

Cliff, I've been thinking about your feeling that MLK was a "trouble maker."
Wasn't your Jesus supposed to be a trouble maker as well? Diane Fossey, of
"Gorillas in the Mist" fame, was a trouble maker. Do you think there might
be a very strong connection between the fact that these people were martyred
and the fact that they pissed a lot of people off?

I have to agree that MLK was a trouble maker. Back then, it was the norm
for blacks to be segregated, forced to sit in the back of busses, arrested
for trying to be served in most restaurants, etc. For many whites, the idea
that blacks should be equal was indeed a high form of "trouble." Since MLK
was a spokesperson for the civil rights movement, and promoted this form of
trouble, I think he qualifies as a trouble maker. In this context, however,
"trouble maker" has good connotations.

About MLK's adultery: According to statistics, 60% of married men
sleep with other women sometime during the marriage. How many historical
figures do you think fall under the 60%? I'm willing to bet that lots of
our heroes and leaders do. However, I'm sure few of them were caught, or
had their flings as well-documented as MLK. Benjamin Franklin was a
promiscuous man. So was JFK. We're even finding that many of our so-called
moral leaders (Swaggart, Bakker) are up to no good. How many more do you
suppose haven't been caught?
I'm not saying that it's OK to commit adultery, I'm just trying to re-state
and strengthen the argument that MLK shouldn't be condemned on that basis.

that makes your use of the word "Most" to be invalid.

I grew up around the New York, Boston and Fall River area, and there
were plenty of blacks.

Zak was correct in his statement Cliff, as it applied to the post-slavery
states in the south. Blacks were indeed openly segregated, in buses, in
restaurants, even in public restrooms and at public drinking fountains.
Having been born and raised in the northeast, as you were, I was not
personally witness to this sort of segregation, but I think that we both saw
a lot of prejudice and hate in the hearts and actions of whites in that
area. Yes, blacks were allowed in buses and restaurants, as you said, but
they also lived in certain sections of the city, other, "white" areas being
closed to them. Only the most menial, dirty jobs were given to blacks, and
their opportunity for a decent education, or to better themselves was rare,
if it existed at all. Matter of fact, even though I have not been back to
the area since 1962, it wouldn't surprise me at all to find the same mindset
still in existence. Some things take several generations to educate out of a

Zak is really right. I grew up in L.A. and in the sixties it wasn't a law
that they had to eat at certainly places for blacks - BUT - most restaurant
owners didn't want them in their establishments and would refuse to serve
them 9 out of 10 times. Ditto the bars. Or the patrons themselves would make
it highly uncomfortable for them to be there. In the deep south, Zak is 100%
right. Calif. eventually passed a law that you couldn't refuse service to
anyone. That caused a hugh stink because legally anyone could go in anywhere
barefooted or in rags and couldn't be refused. I assume they recinded the
law. The reason you probably didn't see any of that kind of stuff back east
- they were more sophistacated. In rural states like Wyoming, it went on all
of the time. My mother in law had a restaurant there in the 60s and she
refused to serve the few that did pass through. Her patrons simply didn't
want them there and would get up and leave. -=*) ANN (*=-

Vintage Cliff:
Goes headlong stomping into something with guns ablaze without first
seeing who's in the room.
Regardless of what each of us does to kill ourselves, wether it be
by smoking yourself into a smouldering, lungless heap of pity or
feast ourselves into cardio-vascular doom with fatty foods and salty
snacks, or if we drink alcoholic beverages until the blood to alcohol

the attitude in which criticism was passed on.
Vintage Cliff in this context refers to his explicit lack of tact
and brawling attitude.
If you insist on criticism of other people's habits, bad, good, indifferent,
the only thing you will accomplish is showing the person you're a real
a$$hole and any good intentions are lost due to your personalizing the
"helpful pleas" into angry, self righteous attacks.
BUt CLiff, you;ve always been like that as far back as I can remember..
your voice starts zooming in decibel content and octaves ..and on
this board, a good idea turns into an axe weilding contest.
FOr the record; I don't think anyone who smokes really wants to
hurt anyone else with it....just like someone who has a bad diet and
doesn't exercise doesn't want to hurt loved ones...and then they die...
now comes along Cliff bearing the axe branding all smokers with some
obscene label....do it to everyone....if my smoking doesn't kill me, the
pollution and or the drivers in this state will.

Answer your own question Ann.
If the law says that murder is wrong, how come so many people run around
killing other people?Gacy, Manson, etc.
Just because people violate laws doesn't change the law. It simple means
that people are disobedient.

Wrong on that count also Bob. THere are laws against adultery on the books
of every state. Adultery is grounds for divorce in any court in the land.
WHat justification does anyone, Christian or not, have for saying that
adultery is OK?

I think Bob was just trying to express his tolerance towards other people.
I think I can safely say he doesn't believe in adultry, but he doesn't go
into a snit about what other's do. Tolerance towards other's is what we all
could use a little bit of. -=*) ANN (*=-

Driving is almost mandatory, in the fact it does do something
useful. As always, this would be over your head. Smoking on the other hand
is to put you into some sort of high... as you can't cope with real life.
While putting you in this high, it just happens to pollute the fresh (what
little there is) air around you. You may think it smells good...but quite
frankly it stinks and makes every thing you own stink! The smell does not
just go away when you put out that dirty butt... but smokers senses are so
dead, they would not know this.

I note you have given up smoking in the past, but you are so WEAK,
you go back to it. You are addicted and will most likely be a smoker for
life.... as short as that may be. I do understand your arrogance about what
is known about smoking and how it hurts people who don't smoke even more...
so you can ENJOY a few moments of selfishness. This is true of MOST
smokers, till the end comes, then they wonder why they were so STUPID! I
have gone though this with people I loved.... My hatred of that poison
stick still stands and you can tear into me as much as you want... proving
what an @$$hole you are!

We have enough pollution, so why add to it? (Mike thinks two wrongs
make it right)

Well, I hope so, but I will wait and see. If there is no mention at all of
the FBI investigation, the sexual excapades, and the 50 year seal of
records, I would say the video is probably on the propaganda side of truth.

Re: "WHat justification does anyone, Christian or not, have for saying that

Since I personally think it is wrong and do not engage in it, I don't know.
But it is obvious that millions do engage in it even though it is against
the law in all 50 states as you say. So, will the persons on this BBS who
engage in adultery please identify yourselves and state why you are breaking
the law. Paul and I can hardly wait to hear your reasons.

How's that Paul?

The Seagate 30 Meg (model ST-4038) has 5 heads, 615 cylinders...
I believe Konan Corporation in Tempe make controller cards for that drive to
work on a Tandy. Give them a call at (602) 345-1300 or if you are in the
area, the address is 4720 South Ash Ave.

        I hope that helps!

Zak, I probably shouldn't say this, since I don't know your sister -- but in
any case no insult is intended.

It just occurs to me that, given that your sister was (apparently) not
burned, and yet she was wearing a shirt which had a huge burn hole in the
pocket, that the shirt may not have been worn at the time it was burned.

No, it doesn't really make any difference anyway.

I guess that perhaps Zak should elaborate where the hole in the pocket is.
I remember him telling me about this a year or so ago. Perhaps the hole was
in the outer material, not the inner.

I've met Zak's sister and she seemed intelligent...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the amount of change that has gone on in
the Warsaw Pact countries. In the last three months more change has occured
than in the previous 30 years.

Last nights images of East and West Berliners dancing on the wall was quite
emotional for me. I guess that there is still some hope.

Sounds juicy! Let's see, what could we call it? Peyton Place is copyrighted,
as is Dallas, John's Other Wife, General Hospital, and all the other
goodies. How about True Confessions of Apollo Adulterers and Adulteresses?
Naah. Too long. Oh well, forget it I guess. Those who do live like that
probably have all their actions fully justified with some brand new, never
been used reasoning, like "my husband/wife doesn't understand me", or "I
knew it was wrong, but just couldn't control myself".

THese are perhaps the most significant events in the last 40 years in
Europe, especially in the Communist blok countries.
As more and more people crave their freedom, the enslaving Communist system
will crumble. THose who a few years ago were going to crush us will find
themselves the dust of a sorry history.
Perhaps the reason the events of the last few days in East Germany haven't
been mentioned is that they are proceeding so rapidly that it's hard to keep
up with them. Nothing but good news, hope and promise there!

If y'all can't figure out how a cigarette could burn a hole through a shirt
pocket while being worn by a woman and not cause a burn mark, y'all need
to take a comparative anatomy course.
