That's right; the Vice Presidency is a lousy job. John Adams called it
useless, and John Nance Garner said it wasn't worth a bucket of warm spit.
One of the great ironies of this campaign is that the Dukakis campaign has
been trying to say on one hand that Bush should get no credit for the
useless job of Vice President, while saying on the other hand that it's an
extremely important job and we should all be worried about Dan Quayle.

Dukakis also holds Bush personally responsible for every drug dealer that
the federal government did not imprison according to TV ad of his I saw
today. I hadn't realized that the Vice President was supposed to be involved
in such matters.

I belive that Bush WAS supposed to imprison drug dealers, as head of the
nation drug interdiction task force.
But anyway, like Bush says, don't forget to vote November 4th. (Can't
someone get this guy a pocket calender?)

True, I had forgotten about the Disney channel. That would be a good

whatever they're calling it these days.

I would be hard-pressed to argue that, say, Murray Rothbard is a
conservative. On the other hand, people like Rothbard are on the
ideological fringe, and while they may be philosophically significant, they
are politically irrelevant.

From today's New York Times:
To the Editor:
Amid all the comments about Gov. Michael S. Dukakis's being a cold
technocrat, I'd like to tell you a story that may put him in a different
light.
In early 1967, I was living in Brookline, Mass., having recently
relocated from the Back Bay area of Boston. One evening I was at home
nursing a flulike condition when the bell to my apartment rang. The caller
identified himself as Michael Dukakis, my state representative. He said
that he made a point of greeting the newly registered voters in his
district, and asked if he might come in to meet me and chat awhile.
I received Representative Dukakis in my bathrobe, with a can of soup in
hand that I was just about to put on the stove. Seeing that I was not
feeling well, Mr. Dukakis asked me to sit down, and proceeded to prepare and
serve me my soup. We went on to have a lively conversation for about two
hours on a wide range of local and national issues.
I remember him as bright, warm, and engaging, and genuinely interested
in who I was and what I thought about things. For me, Michael Dukakis will
always be the consomme' politician.

That was interesting... Just because I do not like his political
views, does not make him a BAD person. They are all people just like you
and I, some not worth a hoot, and some well meaning and honest... but it is
the dishonest politicians that give them ALL a bad name... and I don't care
what PARTY they represent!
At least I don't call Democrats "Donkeys" like my counter part does
to Republicans by calling them "Elephants".

If that last snide remark was aimed at me, Clifford, go into your files and
archives and show me one message, just ONE, in which I called ANY Republican
an elephant.
When you can't find one, either apollogize or shut the heck up!
You are worse than the leadership of your precious party in twisting other
people's words around to say what you want them to say instead of what they

You've twice used the anology that your parents were such knee-jerk
Republicans that they would vote for an elephant if it were the nominee. It
seems to me that the definition of a knee-jerk Democrat is one who would
vote Democrat even if the nominee were Michael Dukakis.
Of course, we do need a President who can make good soup, and Bush has been
strangely silent on that issue. I wonder if he has something to hide?

Yes, I believe that the Libertarian Party can attract widespread support
without altering its ideology enough to betray the underlying principles
that separate it from the Republican Party.
As I explained last time, I used the recognizable form of part of your
message for specific reasons which have nothing to do with making a parody
of your position. The version I wrote supported itself with its own
arguments and was obviously not an attempt to put any words in your mouth.
Some people will stoop to write an intentionally foolish support of a
position they disagree with and attempt to pass it off as the work of
someone else, or at least identify it with that person in jest in order to
discredit them by proxy. If I had done something like that you would have
a basis for complaint (or would you?). Since my re-use of derogatory terms
is annoying, you could simply limit their first-use.
I remember a James Taranto, of not long ago, who laughed at the idea of
peace through strength and berated the work ethic itself. This would hardly
qualify him as a conservative or a libertarian of any stripe. I'm not
saying that this should still be held against you in spite of your obvious
enlightenment, I'm just reminding you of it in the context of your claimed
credentials to 'evaluate' matters for the rest of us.

You are absolutely correct David. That is exactly what I said, and that is a
long way from calling any candidate, or any person, an elephant, which is
what I have been accused of doing by someone who obviously is having a
problem with reading comprehension.
By the way, I make excellent soup. Maybe I should run for office?

Again you display a pitiful lack of comprehension.
Let me try to simplify my statement in such a way that even you might be
able to understand.
I said, now read this carefully.... I was raised by a family who were such
staunch supporters of the REpublican party, and so strongly conservative
(although such terms had not come into use in those days), that they, that
is my family (that's my parents, my aunts and uncles, my cousins, people
like that) would vote a Republican ticket no matter who a candidate was.
Since the elephant is the symbol that has long been adopted by the
REpublican party as their national symbol, I used that as an analogy.
In other words, Cliff, I was making an observation on my lineage and their
political preferences, which, apparently are not much different than yours.
How you interpret that remark as a slam against anyone is beyond me. The
only explanation I can think of is that you are so filled with hate and
bitterness that you cannot see anything in my posts except that which you
wish to see. That being the case, there is nothing more I can say, except to
pity you, for such unreasoned bitterness is very self-destructive. It is
indeed sad to see a friend destroy himself with such lack of reason and
understanding.

There by saying an Elephant is similar to the people that run for office

Dear Fellow Republicans:
1988 is an important election year for our country and our state.
The critical question is whether we will continue with leadership
that respects the values that make this country great: hard work, thrift,
family, community, faith.
We need leaders who want to help the American people keep more of
their hard earned wages, not pay more taxes to a government already too
big.
We influence the direction of our state and nation by the people
we choose to represent us. I hope you will be sure to vote on
November 8.
Our future depends on it.
Sincerely,
Jon Kyl
