Two weeks before the election, my friend Brad and I bet on the margin of
Bush's victory. I said 12.7 percent, he said 11.3, and the actual margin
was roughly 8 (without counting minor parties). But I also had a
straight-up $20 bet on Bush with a girl in California, so I come out ahead.

The Earth's motion has little to do with gravity. The effective gravity

Almost all of mine are commercial free because I edit them while taping. The
ones I time tape in the middle of the night are not however. There are only
about 10 Wayne movies that can be rented and they have been shown on TV so
much. I'd like to know where some of his good ones are - like The High and
Nighty for instance? I have a book that lists 150 of his movies - I have 103
- that leaves 47 unaccounted for and some of those were in the 60s and 70s!
There is a movie that he plays a hockey player and one he plays a dead body
in - I'd give my eye teeth for either! He started in the movies in 1927 and
never once in all those years until he died did he miss not making at least
one movie a year! Several of those years he made up to six movies too. Just
a little John Wayne trivia here. =+= ANN =+=

Here is something interesting. The Times Mirror Corporation (owner of the
Los Angeles Times, among other papers) has been conducting surveys for the
last few years, in which they break the electorate down into 10 demographic
group: two basically Republican, four basically independent, four basically
Democratic. Their most recent sample asks for presidential preference and
break it down into these demographic group. (The total sample favors Bush
50-42 percent.) Here is how it breaks down:

GOP Groups:
Enterprisers (11% of total electorate): "Pro-business, anti-government,
worry about economic issues." Favor Bush, 96-2 percent.
Moralists (12% of electorate): "Pro-school prayer, anti-abortion, worry
about social issues." Favor Bush, 93-3 percent.

Independent Groups:
Upbeats (14% of electorate): "Young, optimistic, patriotic, pro-government,
pro-Reagan, worry about economic issues." Favor Bush, 83-12 percent.
Disaffecteds (11% of electorate): "Pessimistic, alienated, financially
pressured, worry about nation's current course." Favor Bush, 60-26 percent.
Followers (7% of electorate): "Young, politically apathetic, worry about
loss of jobs due to foreign competition." Favor Dukakis, 60-28 percent.
Seculars (7% of electorate): "Non-religious, non-militant, tolerant,
educated, worry about economy and Central America." Favor Dukakis, 61-33
percent.

Democratic Groups:
'60s Democrats (10% of electorate): "Religious, non-militant, tolerant,
educated, pro-government, worry about social justice issues." Favor
Dukakis, 84-10 percent.
New Dealers (10 percent of electorate): "Older, pro-government, pro-union,
socially conservative, worry about foreign competition." Favor Dukakis,
72-15 percent.
Partisan Poor (10 percent of electorate): "Militantly Democratic,
pro-social spending, worry about drug abuse, unemployment, social justice."
Favor Dukakis, 62-25 percent.
God and Country Democrats (8 percent of electorate): "Older, religious,
poor, patriotic, wory about drugs, crime, foreign competition." Favor
Dukakis, 62-25 percent.

Now, it seems to me there are two groups among these that would potentially
be receptive to the Libertarian Party: the Enterprisers and the Seculars.
Together, they account for 18 percent of the electorate, not enough to make
a major party. Moreover, neatly two thirds of the Libertarian Party's
support under such a scenario would have to come from the GOP's core
support, and if the Libertarian Party were able to win their allegiance, the
Republican Party would be left with a core that constitutes less than an
eighth of the electorate. Moreover, we would have to hope that the Seculars
are either pro-free market or at least apathetic toward economic issues, and
likewise, we'd have to hope that the Enterprisers are either social
libertarians or not hostile to a radically libertarian view on social
issues. On top of that. we would have to hope that the Enterprisers are
either foreign-policy isolationists or relatively unconcerned with foreign
affairs. In short, it would be a very uneasy alliance.

The Republican Party's success in recent years has come because its core
constituencies, the Enterprisers and the Moralists, are able to get along.
The Enterprisers don't care all that much about social issues, and the
Moralists are pro-free market enough. Both, I suspect, support the
Republican Party's hard-line foreign policy.

The Democratic Party's lack of success in national politics has come because
of the direct conflicts among its core constituencies. The God and Country
Democrats cannot abide the '60s Democrats any more than anyone else can.
The Democrats' core groups, then, are unable to unite behind a national
candidate, but, because the groups tend to be distributed unevenly by
region, state and local candidates can do quite well.

Your hypothesis about a rise to power of the Libertarian Party out of the
ashes of the Democrats is silly. First, it would require a split in the
Republican Party which would leave it in the hands of Moralists, and
probably turn it into a fringe party. Secondly, it takes no account of the
38% of the electorate that makes up the Democratic core groups.

Of course, you might simply reject Times-Mirror's methodology, but so far
you haven't offered any data to support your conclusions. I remain
unconvinced that your analysis is anything more than wishful thinking.

(NOTE: The survey data I cited can be found in an advertisement on today's
New York Times op-ed page.)

Well, the Disaffecteds are rather vaguely defined, but it seems to me Rod
Williams and, to a lesser extent, Ann Oudin would be good examples of this
category. Rod, of course, has become an "advocate" of the Libertarian
Party, but before that he was an "advocate" of Lenora Fulani, another
minor-party candidate who supports such things as socialized medicine and
nationalizing the press. The Disaffecteds might be drawn to minor parties
because they are alienated from the major parties, but I don't think they
could ever be considered a reliable part of any political coalition.

WASHIGTON - An increase in the number of women working
outside the home has allowed most American families to retain
the buying power they had 10 years ago, according to a study
released Saturday.
Forty percent of familes, however, had not kept pace with
the increasing cost of living over the past decade, said the
study by the Economic Policy Institute.
The head of the liberal think tank said the report shows
average American families have been under greater economic
pressure during the past decade than at any time since World
War II.
The institute, established in 1986 by prominent liberal
economists, describes itself as a non-partisan, non-profit
group. It has opposed the conservative economic policies of
the Reagan administration.
The report says salaries for most women have increased
faster than inflation, while salaries for all but the richest
American men have not kept up.
Economists Stephen Rose of Seattle and David Fasenfest of
Louisville, Ky., who wrote the report, said they used
statistical methods that take into account family size. They
also used the most conservative cost-of-living figures to
overcome objections to previous studies that also showed
widening inequality and slow income growth.
Some conservative economists have argued that Americans are
doing better because families are smaller even if family
incomes have not kept up with inflation.

From Az. Republic:

Antitrust laws unenforced, consumer group says

WASHINGTON - Consumer advocates charged Saturday that the
Federal Trade Commission has failed to enforce antitrust laws
under President Reagan giving business too much of a free
hand in mergers that are unhealthful for consumers and the
economy.
Public Citizen, a consumer- and environmental-interest
group founded by Ralph Nader, said in a new study that the
United States is going through an unprecedented wave of
corporate mergers and acquisitions.
Joan Claybrook, president of Public Citizen, said former
FTC Chairman James Miller and current Chairman Daniel Oliver
"are the James Watt and Anne Burford (Gorsuch) of antitrust."
In the early years of the Reagan administration,
environmental activists scorned Watt, former interior
secretary, and Gorsuch, former head of the Environmental
Protection Agency, for actions the activists felt were more
harmful than helpful.
The study called for reforms that would require merging
firms to file an economic-impact statement with the FTC.
Public Citizen also called on the FTC to inform Congress of
its reasons when it decides not to intervene in mergers of
big companies.
The study said the 10 largest mergers in U.S. history took
place during the Reagan administration.
The report also said the FTC has brought only 13 cases
against mergers during seven years of the Reagan
administration, compared with 22 cases in the four years of
the Carter administration.

Vote how you feel you should vote. Only a write-in vote for a unofficial
write-in (in Arizona, anyway) is a 'thrown-away' vote. If you don't
like Bush or Dukakis, and can find things you like with Ron Paul or Ms.
Fulani, by all means vote for them. If you want to support the fight that
George McGovern is behind, by all means make sure you do the write-in for
that correctly.

Cliff, here's the [V]ote I said I'd post for you. Use it if you like:

For which candidate for U.S. Senate do you plan to vote?

[A] Dennis DeConcini, Democrat
[B] Keith DeGreen, Republican
[C] Ed Finklestein, New Alliance Party
[D] Rick Thompkins, Libertarian

Poll results to date:
[A] 7 [B] 10 [C] 2 [D] 10

I had [V]oted for the Libertarian, but since the Race has heated up between
DeConcini and DeGreen, I am going to [V]ote for DeGreen now. It is time to

Keith DeGreen, the lifelong Democrat turned Republican when it became
"convenient" to do so for personal ambition, the man who couldn't care
enough to vote in Arizona for the past three general elections, has run a
"below the belt" campaign, full of distortions, false innuendoes and
outright lies.
Senator DeConcini has disproved those lies by taking some of them to the
Drpartment of Justice, who found absolutely no improprieties with either of
his family's land deals. The DeGreen commercial purporting to quote
DeConcini as saying he wasn't listening to the people back home was a remark
taken totally out of context many years ago (listen to the voice! A much
younger DeConcini!), when the then aspiring senator was pointing out, I
think, Carl Hayden's record run in the office.
I have had three different occassions to use Senator Deconcini's office to
deal with personal problems with various beaurocrats, and found him to be a
very caring, very interested man, who was indeed sensitive to the issues
that involve us back home, and who never failed to act in a timely and
positive manner on a request. I didn't always get the result I hoped for,
but I always got the satisfaction of knowing that my Senator and his staff
did their best on my behalf.
Since my family (wife and stepson) were aware of the action at those times,
you can count 3 votes for Senator, and STILL Senator aftere today, Dennis
DeConcini.

No, it's not a crime not to vote, but you just got through saying how
you were suspicious of people involved in shady dealings, even if there was
no crime committed. Not voting, especialy if you claim to be politicaly
involved, is shady.
As far as the presidential race goes, any vote for someone besides Bush
might be considered "thrown away." Bush will carry Arizona. Period. No one
has ever suggested that he wouldn't carry this state, even in a close race.

More from Az. Republic:
Brewer's fliers fight communist tag

In an attempt to combat early-morning telephone calls that
she says are sabotaging her campaign, state Sen. Jan Brewer,
R-Glendale, passed out 8,000 fliers Saturday in Sun City to
counter claims she is a communist.
The calls, which have been made recently from midnight to
6 a.m., ask people to vote for "Comrade Jan Brewer on
Election Day so we can fly the communist flag in District
19."
Brewer's fliers say the callers are from the Arizona
Communist Party, but Terry Choate Jr. claims he made them.
Choate is still upset with her for her opposition to his
plan to build a memorial to the anti-war movement of the
1960s in the far west Valley. The monument would have flown
the North Vietnamese flag over it.
"Just helping her with her campaign," Choate said, adding,
"Back in 1986, she helped me with my peace park. She was so
helpful that we couldn't build it."
Earlier in the campaign, Choate posted fliers calling
Brewer "our own dear Comrade Janbo."
Brewer said reaction to the calls has been unfavorable.
"When you have 60 people call a day and say they are not
going to vote for you, that's a good percentage," Brewer
said.
Her fliers say the phone calls are a "slanderous attempt to
confuse voters."
She said that the fliers seem to be helping. Some
constituents called it a "horrible, horrible incident, and
they knew it couldn't have been me," Brewer said.
Her opponent, Democrat Carol Griffin, was unavailable for
comment Saturday.

How do you figure that the government HASN'T been running our life and
business these last 8 years? If it isn't the big Washington government, it's
the local one that hamstrings us at every turn - the man in business for
himself gets stuck the worst everytime! I said it six months ago and I'll
say it again - politicians are NOT the friend of the people!!

Now that Bush is in (no surprise here) - we can only hope that we indeed
voted for the lessor of two evils. It was a dirty campaign and I for one am
glad it's over - it wasn't pleasent to watch and hear! Maybe - just maybe
Bush will at least be a fair president. But above and beyond the candidates,
I abhored the press most of all! Their egos are tremendous and I believe the
reason this campaign was so dirty was mainly because of them. They
instigated most of it and kept it going. Peter Jennings is a smug egotist
that thinks he knows everything and his word is sacred. David Brinkley? What
is that cadaver still doing reporting the news anyway? There is not a
simular woman reporting the news - they don't have women on TV that has that
many wrinkles and that old. I resent that! The oldest one is Barbara Walters
and she's had so many face lifts to keep her wrinkle free. At the debates,
all the reporters were rude to the candidates and searched for dirt reather
than the issues. The press swayed the voters more than the candidates by
far. Politics used to be fun - not now.
Did anyone find out what the Libertarian candidate did? I did not hear one
thing mentioned and have not read the paper yet. I watched ABC! =+= ANN =+=

generosity, must learn to say no, a national philanthropic
expert said Thursday.
James Joseph, president of the Council of American
Foundations in Washington, said philanthropists are suffering
from a "new unrealism" that assumes they can fill the gap
left by dwindling federal dollars for human services.
During a visit to Phoenix to help celebrate the 10th
anniversary of the charitable Arizona Community Foundation,
Joseph said in an interview that charities cannot fill the
chasm left by federal budget cuts for such things.
"It will behoove us to begin talking about our limits,"
said Joseph, who was an undersecretary of the Department of
Interior for then-President Carter. He said that in the
past, foundation grants were used to find cures for diseases
and "creative and innovative ways" to solve problems.
However, much of the $6.3 billion given by charitable
foundations last year was used to keep people alive rather
than discover why they are dying, he said:
"If we have to use foundation money to feed the homeless,
who is going to find the reason why they are homeless?"
Joseph asked.
"You could use all foundation money to treat AIDS victims,
but who is going to find the cure?"
Debate continues over how many of society's problems should
be shouldered by private foundations and how many of them
should be the responsibility of the federal government,
Joseph said.
One of the challenges facing directors of American
foundations seeking contributions is to create a "sense of
community" among corporations and other donors, he said.
Corporate donations leveled off to $4.5 billion in 1986 and
1987 but will increase if executives are convinced of the
need to improve their communities, Joseph said.
He disagreed with a 1987 observation by urban-affairs
expert Neal Peirce, who said Valley residents and
corporations are tightfisted and reluctant to donate money to
charities, social-service agencies and the arts.
"Phoenix is like any other young city," he said.
"Newcomers still bestow their benevolence on the cities they
came from.
"But I would be optimistic about the future. The next
layer of newcomers will feel a commitment to Phoenix."

From the state-by-state election breakdown in today's New York Times:

MONTANA

Early projections indicated that Senator John Melcher, a Democrat, lost
his bid for a third term against Conrad Burns, a Republican. Mr. Burns, a
newcomer to politics, had little money and did not prove as adept a
campaigner as party officials had hoped. But as the campaign ended,
Republicans said Mr. Burns had closed in on the incumbent Democrat. That
was despite the Senator's renewed use of talking cows in his television
commercials.

I have my doubts about "The Dukes of Hazzard" on a politician's resume.
The votes for DeGreen were wasted because DeGreen is an idiot.
As for Ron Paul, if he did better than 500,000 votes (which I believe he
did), then that's quite an improvement over the 200,000 or so votes that
David Bergland received in 1984.
I believe Bergland only received about 5,000 votes in Arizona.

That's something that irritated me throughout this entire campaign:
The way the press (for lack of a better term) has constantly made
irrelevant, yet slightly derogatory, comments about Bush. Rather's
comments, such as that about the contact lenses, can't be denied, or even
really argued with without seeming petty. Yet, these "little asides" add up
to create a generally unfavorable perspective.
It's like making snide, but not outright rude, remarks about "those
people down the street," or a not-so-favorite cousin. ("Oh, Evelyn. How
nice to see you. Have you started using dress shields?")
I doubt we would have ever heard Rather say "Well, I see Michael
Dukakis trimmed his eyebrow."
The constant reference to "negative" advertising is another example.
In the rest of the advertising world these are called "comparative" ads. I
wonder why, when applied to a political campaign, they're suddenly
"negative."

Aw, come on Cliff. As I said before, in Arizona, any vote for anyone
besides Bush was a "wasted" vote. No WAY was Arizona going to go for
Dukakis, even when he was 20% ahead of Bush in the polls nationaly. Given
that, those that didn't favor Bush might as well indulge themselves with a
protest vote.
I see Prop. 106 squeaked by. I wonder how those living in Table, Garlic,

If anyone one wants to know why I don't like the Electoral College, the

little higher -- a few states had one or two precints still to report. I'm
guessing on Bush's electoral vote count -- the paper only gave the count for
Dukakis. Dukakis carried ten states plus Washington D.C. -- better than
Mondale I suppose, but a far cry from winning. Mondale carried only
Minnisota (his home state) and D.C.

My comment regarding a vote for DeGreen being "wasted" was for your benefit,
Cliff, since you've been railing about votes for Libertarians being wasted.
Looking at the percentage of votes DeGreen received, it's clear he had no
chance of winning. And he *is*, an idiot. While I would be happy to have
seen DeConcini turned out of office, the charges DeGreen brought against him
were mostly groundless misrepresentations. And seeing an interview of
DeGreen on television made it quite clear that he is an opportunistic
sleazeball.

Elections are not horseraces, though--any vote for a candidate you think
should be in office is not a wasted vote, no matter how few votes that
candidate gets. Voting for a candidate you don't want to get into
office--that is a wasted vote.

After listening to some Libertarians and seeing their pulling power
for votes, I now will lump them in with the Communist Party and no longer
even refer to them. I do not recognize the Libertarians as a valid party.
By the way, All Politicians are "opportunistic"! As for the
"Sleaze" factor, maybe so, but I smell something wrong with DeConcini
wanting to give 7 million in "TAX" money to his son's dance school.... and
then there is all that money he made from that land deal.... He may even be
innocent, but if Mecham had done any such thing...you would be out to HANG
him.
I stand by my Vote for DeGreen.... Even if it was only to break
DeConcini's longstanding grip on Arizona. A Vote for the Libertarian did
not even count to show DeConcini that his constituents are not pleased. So
small in fact, the media won't even waste ink printing it.
Last: Yes, I suppose you have the right to Vote for whom you
please... And if you feel good with the results...fine! I have no problem
with that. I just can't help to wonder, if the Libertarians got into
power...if we would soon lose that right? Things that sound too good are
generally traps. Ask the people who let Communism in.... they can't vote
otherwise.

What did you expect the Libertarians to do? Get 40% of the vote? I think a
200% increase in votes since the last election is substantial.
As for your uncontrollable wondering, that's rather ludicrous. The
Libertarian Party is completely straightforward about the changes they would
make to the government, unlike certain other parties which say one thing in
election year promises and then do something completely different.
The voting records of Libertarians who have been elected speak for
themselves (such as Andre Marrou in the Alaskan state Senate and even Ron

The Electoral College makes votes in small states such as Arizona count for
more than those in large states. For example, in 1984, there were 146,556
votes cast in Arizona for every electoral vote. In California, there were
202,243 votes cast for every electoral vote. Thus, one Arizona vote was
equivalent to 1.38 California votes.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The capital of Florida is Jacksonville.
At least, that's what a new book designed to enlighten
cultural and geographical illiterates says.
*The Dictionary of Cultural Literacy: What Every American
Needs to Know*, makes no mention of Tallahassee, Florida's
actual capital.
But on Page 382, in the chapter "American Geography," is
this listing: "Jacksonville - Capital of FLORIDA, located in

The chapter begins, "Tests have revealed that many
Americans are amazingly ignorant of the geography of their

Take this bus and drive it; rider says, 'OK'

SANTA ANA, Calif. - A bus driver whose vehicle was
commandeered by a passenger who accepted his challenge to
"drive this better than I can" has been fired, transit
officials said.
Kim Dale Miller, 36, was dismissed Friday, a day after his
case was heard by an Orange County Transit District
committee, said spokeswoman Claudia Keith.
The driver was dismissed for berating a passenger and
leaving a bus unattended, Keith said.
Witnesses said Miller got off his bus Oct. 19 after
challenging passenger James Biddle to do a better job at the
wheel.
Biddle, a 52-year-old Buena Park engineer, said that he
complained about the driver's berating a passenger and that
he also chided Miller about his driving.
At that point, Biddle said, Miller told him, "I suppose you
think you can drive this better than I can."
When Biddle said he could, Miller got off the bus and stood
on a corner, arms folded, as Biddle drove away.
Biddle carried the vehicle's 31 passengers more than a
mile, stopping to let people off and on, before police
stopped him. Passengers said later that Biddle made change,
gave them transfer tickets and was courteous.
Biddle was cited for joy riding and operating the vehicle
without a bus-driver's license.

WHEN I WAS ONE AND TWENTY
by Ivana O. Martin & Kent Winslow
When I was one and twenty
      I heard Jim Bakker say,
"Give me your dimes and dollars
and I'll wash your sins away.
"Give me your tens and twenties
and I'll save your soul from heck."
Well, I was young and foolish
So I wrote him out a check.

When I was two and twenty
      I heard from Tammy Faye.
She clutched her chest and told me of
The bills they had to pay.
      She honked into her hankie
      While mascara fell like rain.
      Still being young and gullible,
      I anted up again.

When I was three and twenty,
Jim had good news for me.
He said he'd bought a satellite
      (Too bad it wasn't free.)
He said, "We've joined the space age!"
And with that I felt content,
So I sent him all my money
And I didn't pay my rent.

When I was four and twenty
Tammy Faye said "Things look black."
      "The theme park's treading water,
Jim and I are catching flack.
"You know that god will triumph
And the victory will be sweet."
So I hocked my suit and sent the loot
And moved out on the street.

When I was five and twenty,
They both looked pale and wan.
It seem that Jim engaged in sin
With a gal names Jessie Hahn.
When I met Jim and Tammy,
My world seemed bright and new.
But now I'm old and homeless
      And I haven't got a sou.

      The moral of my story
Is plain for all to see.
Don't waste your dough on louts who blow
      God's horn eternally.
For if there were a Jesus,
You could call him on the phone.
      We wouldn't need religious nuts
Who screech and howl and moan.

      We wouldn't need Jim Bakker,
      Nor Swaggart's sordid tryst-
And even less do we need them now,
      For GOD DOES NOT EXIST.
                (with apologies to A.E. Housman)

JT, I was never for Fulani. It was only a joke, I didn't, at the
time think that I would be taken seriously. I am a Libertarian and I am
going to join that party and become an active supporter.

Bob, (liar) Yes, you are correct in your assumptions.

APRO, the article about propaganda by omission certainally hit home
when I tried to find out how Ron Paul came out in the election. Thus far I
have not heard the vote totals for this candidate. It is like he never
existed and he was the best man running.

I was again phoned by the Washington Post - New York Times Poll
people who again asked me some questions about the major candidates. All
third party people were left out. No mention was made of their names.
Hmmm, it is like the powers that be are going out of their way to do this.
Wonder what they are afraid of? I think I know.

Your invited - as soon as we get it running! Hahahaha! It's a
inboard/outboard and the former owners hit a rock and the lower prop section
had to be replaced. We have all the parts - Whitey just needs time to get it
back together and we have to wait for the title to come from the DMV and
that should take a couple of weeks. Too bad the weather is going to get cold
very soon - but we would still go out to fish. Are you game? Hell - I'll
ever let you water ski - 2 good skis came with it, plus a tow rope and life
preservers. In fact - I'd love to pull you behind a boat! Heh heh heh -
you'd never be the same again!! Ha ha ha. The boat also came with a canopy
top plus a full wrap around cover with windows that completely covers the
boat in case it rains! Lots of holders for beer too and two built in ice
chests/bait boxes! Sounds like fun don't it! =+= Prunes Annie =+=
P.S. The boat is 17 ft. long - a tri hull and has seating for 10 people -
you can bring Cocoa and Duke!

Last night I had a dream that I was smoking pot with Rod. I seem to remember
that all of Rod's ideas about time became crystal clear while I was smoking.
Too bad BilJ isn't around to interpret this for me.
