I haven't read the stories, even though I intended to. I went through the
list of files in the Library, but couldn't find any of them. Are they hidden
or what?
Cities should be built so the automobile is mostly unnecessary to get
around. Phoenix should serve as an example of exactly how NOT to organize a
city. There should be cars here and there to have sex in, though.

You are getting way off base now in your continued attack on beauty
contests and the winners of them. You may have had some valid points at
first, but I think that JT has you so wound up on this thing that you are
typing without thinking.
One big thing that you are either missing entirely or overlooking is the
fact that the winners are judged, not by beauty alone, but also by grace,
intelligence, poise and all those other attributes that contribute to
mature, capable womanhood.
You are also forgetting that the major prizes in these contests are
scholarships that will allow the winners to further their education and
become anything they want to be. If I remember correctly, the first prize in
the Miss America contest is a $25,000 scholarship. Not a bad thing at all.
Every now and again, I see or hear of a former Miss America, or other
pageant winner who has become very successful in her field of endeavor, and
those are as varied as the women themselves.
When you, in your state of confusion and misinformation, as much as say
that these highly intelligent, agressive and capable people are good for
nothing more than a roll in the hay, you are the one who is stripping them
of the dignity and respect they deserve, not the beauty contests that
propelled them on the road to success. Think about it BEFORE you respond.

Everybody is entitled to a mistake now and then. I guess mine came
when I fat-fingered in poop instead of poor. Maybe it was a Freudian slip?
Who knows? I still feel that a beauty contest doesn't diminish me in any
way, even if I was an entrant.
If you want to think dirty thoughts while looking at pictures of some
hunk, Ann, it doesn't diminish the rest of the males around you. Beauty is
in the eye of the beholder, and so is the diminishment you're worried about.

I'm glad to hear you do not think of women as conquests! I also think
everybody likes to look at beautiful women AND men. In fact, just a little
while ago, I was glancing through the paper and came across a very large ad
with Cher as the model. Being one of my all time favorite beauties, I gawked
and admired. Her outfit was brief, but not too much so. Then I looked down
at the bottom of the ad and saw it was for U.S. Swin and Fitness health
club and I had to chuckle because such ads are part of what I'm talking
about. Most everybody know how many operations Cher has had to maintain that
beautiful body - she's admitted it on several TV talk shows and magazines.
Now don't you think a healthy looking man or woman - not muscle bound
individuals - would be more appropriate for such a ad? Cher does not apply
to the product! Who's going to take this seriously?
Re: the rest of your post, your questions have already been answered.

Date: 05/15/89 Time: 09:37:41
I do not think that a beauty contest(s) in general causes men to go out and
rape, but it is one of the reasons. First of all, let me clarify one thing -
--- no one is responsible for rape but the man doing it regardless of his
reasons. But women should take some responsibility for it also. Lets take a
hypothetical story ---- a young single male goes out to a disco for a night.
He spends hours watching the women on the dance floor. Most of the women are
bra less - wearing mini skirts - and dancing VERY suggestivily! Now if I was
a man, I'd certainly get the opinion that woman are dressed and act that way
because they are interested in sex. Why else would they do it? So, he gets
heated up and goes out to Central Park and rapes some woman - and he might
have it in his mind he's giving her what he really wants. Many men have
confessed this when caught! But - not just the dancing women have made him
come to this conclusion. In the past month, he has seen beauty contests,
Swim Suit editions, toilet bowl commercials etc. etc. not to mention Playboy
and the like - all depicting women as half undressed lustful creatures who
are just waiting for their hunk to come along and satisfy them. If all of
this is what he is exposed to, why wouldn't he think women are here for his
pleasure? If we kept the ads in their proper perspective - kept the sex to
Playboy type magazines etc. etc. - he wouldn't be so bombarded constanly and
get wrong opinions. Of course, this is my opinion. I just think women are
used way too much and with some warped individuals, it creates problems.

Paul's post was very clear and to the point. The swim suit part is
just one of the many parts they are judged on. You make it sound like they
go though the whole contest in swim suits... that is NOT true. Lets face it
Ann, you are so upset over the "swim suit" part, you fail to see the rest of
the contest for what it really is. It is apparent that these young women
who enter these contest of their own free will are only diminished in your
eyes. You are upset because they get attention. Well, seems I know one
lady who drives around in a sporty 'Vet' to get attention.... You care to
tell us about this?

Hey, put it this way, if the beauty pagents did not have the
swimsuit competition, their ratings would go way down and the ad men would
get less for a spot, thus losing money. Sex sells. Remember that.
Besides, every time I see the swimsuit competition, I get very

Why should anyone get awards, glory, laud and honor for their beauty
because they happened to be born that way? Why not?
And do you really believe that the contestants in the Miss America pagent
really look like they look like they do? G'wan! They're wearing makeup!
And they've been dieting to change their shapes. If they win, it's because
they *worked* for it!
Look. There are some people born pretty, and if they work at it hard
enough, they can be beautiful and become Miss America.
Some people are born non-puny and have the ability to increase their
strength enough with the proper exercise to become Mr America.
Some people are born with enough of whatever it takes to be good spellers,
and can practice enough to become great spellers.
In each of these, there is some raw ability that can be improved upon, so
they don't differ in any significant way, as I said before. The homely are
not going to become beautiful (generally), but neither are the truly puny
going to become muscle-bound, and some people will *never* be able to spell.
So would you expand your dislike of beauty contests to include any contest
at all for which there are people totally incapable of winning?

My previous message answers some of yours in #58656.
As for why there's a bathing suit portion to the contest, why not? That's
simply one of the criteria they use. After all, it *is* a beauty contest,
and how the contestants look in swimsuits is relevant to the contest in
question.
One think to note is that unlike races where the criterion of victory is
objective -- first one over the finish line wins -- beauty contests are very
subjective -- the one with the highest score wins, and the scores depend on
the judges' *opinions*.
Should you then have no objection to objective contests, but only to
subjective ones? Then you'd have to outlaw essay contests.
The point remains: why *object* to beauty contests? I have no interest
in Marty Feldman Look-Alike contests, and could never win one, but does that
mean I should demand that they be abolished? If I don't like 'em, I ignore
'em! You should be able to do the same.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Fact is, the human animal is
ugly, especially when viewed from a fly's vantage point. We just accept
each other as beautiful critters because it is what we are used to.
I know people who like heavy girls. If given a choice between a
slim or fat chick, they'd take the fat one every time. What is pretty to
one person may be ugly to another. I think that the judges should be chosen
a little differently in the future. I'd like to see a fat, wart-faced,
woman win one of those national beauty contests. There are some mighty
intelligent, so-called, ugly people around. Give them an equal chance.
