The Romans did not have the technology to save themselves from the poisonous
effects of lead. I am convinced that this society will survive --- too many
people are dedicating their lives to finding a safer, cleaner way to do
things. Americans are remarkably resourceful and resiliant people. The
pollution from automobiles and such is not as yet a major threat to our
lives, yet we are the _first_ nation to create an agency whose sole duty is
to protect the environment. It may get worse before it ultimately gets
better, but I am convinced there is a solution and that it will be found in
time.

        Looks like I am going to cancel the ART SIG Story Kontest...
As Ann pointed out, this is unfair for the people that can't hold a story
line.  And since everyone can't win 1st place... this would degrade second
place on down as their other skills don't count. Beautiful stories or
beautiful bodies, I see no differance in the contest. A contest is a
contest, and it takes work and skill to tone a body or write a winning
story.

I protest spelling contests, as a bad speller can't win so it is unfair!

Yes, you are slow! To simplify it so that you will understand, - to use
women's body's and sex appeal for selling cereal, a hunting magazine cover,
beer, car, toothpaste, dental floss, soap powder commercials etc. is indeed
'using women' where there is no connection what so ever! AND in that Swim
suit edition because it also has nothing to do with it what so ever. It
would be more suitable to have a male Swim Suit edition, however still
silly! There is nothing wrong with porn - it is the people's choice on
whether they want to see it or not and as I said before, it does not just
show women. If you think beauty contests are so great, just tell me why they
must pose in bathing suits? Also, what is the PURPOSE of them?
Another thing - why should anyone get awards, glory laud and honor for their
beauty because they happened to be born that way - genes? It takes no skill

Because they exploit women?  Spelling bees exploit good spellers, so why not
disagree with them, too?  Weight-lifting contests exploit the muscle-bound
in the same way.  Air-guitar contests exploit airheads.  In fact, *every*
type of contest exploits people capable of winning it, so why single out
beauty contests?
  Maybe it's because you're not pretty enough to win a beauty contest, but
then, you're not a good enough speller to win spelling bee, and probably not
strong enough to win a weight-lifting contest, or fast enough to win the
Boston Marathon, or stupid enough to win an air-guitar contest.  So why
single out beauty contests?

How can I make it any clearer? ALL the contests you mention are about people
that have earned the right to be there - studied long and hard - practiced
for a year, maybe years to reach the top to be a contestant! With Beauty
contests, that is not the case at all! They got there by sheer luck and
perhaps with some pull from higher sorces! BTW - my question hasn't been
answered so I'll ask it again --- Why do they have to have to put on bathing
suits to be judged for their beauty anyway? Also, what IS beauty? I've seen
a lot of people that would be considered ugly in societies standards, but I
did not and found them quite beautiful in their unique way. I defy you to
tell me all those puppets in a B-contest have any uniqueness about them!
They walk around like living statues and mouth off words that they have
rehearsed and they all look alike! Where's the challenge or contest in that?

Let me get this straight - you are canceling the Kontest and punishing the
rest of the writers because I disagree with beauty contests and no other

It was shear luck that the people who entered the ART SIG Kontest belonged
to the APOLLO BBS.  Of course, luck or being in the right place at the right
time has a lot to do with any Kontest.  Just because one wins a spelling
Kontest or a beauty Kontest, does not make that person the best in the
world, but only the best of the people entered into said Kontest.
Besides, Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

Every clarification you offer confuses me even more.  So let's try this
again:

OK, does not diminish freedom:
Pornography ("the people's choice")
Magazines devoted to photos of beautiful women in swimsuits
All contests except beauty contests

Bad, does diminish freedom:
Beautiful women in advertisements for products
Sports magazines with photos of beautiful women in swimsuits ("not their
purpose")
Beauty contests (because women pose in swimsuits)

So, why is it OK for women to pose in swimsuits for magazines devoted to
women in swimsuits, but not for beauty contests?  How can magazines with
women in swimsuits have a purpose while beauty contests have none?
And how in the heck does any of this diminish freedom?

After all, there are literally hundreds of thousands of men whose favorite
sport is girl watching, especially on the beach. You might call those new

Simplication: If they use a woman's body and sex appeal to advertize
something totally irrelevant to said product, that's exploitation.

1. (again!) In beauty contests, why do they have to pose in swin suits to be

2. Why does a strickly sports magazine need a 'swim suit' edition?
3.Why does a woman in a bikini pose with a rifle and buck deer on the cover
of a hunting magazine? What has that got to do with the contents?
4. Why does a box of cereal that tastes like horse fodder have to have a

You say it sells the products? I feel that Madison Avenue is telling you
that! 
About two years ago, I saw a TV commercial for some toilet bowl cleaner. The
lovely, beautiful woman that was bikini clad, was pouring the gumk down the
toilet and some guy in the back ground was saying "By using this product, it
gave the lovely time for play"! and then the final scene, she ran out the
door to a car full of hunks (4) and she gave a backward glance over her
shoulder to the viewers to imply 'this can happen to you'! That's

        I think that everyone prostitutes themself.  If you have a boss
and he or she gives you a distasteful task to do and you want to keep your
job then you have little choice.  Even if you are self employed you must not
be too independent because you may find yourself without rent money.
        Everyone is a hooker for something.  If you are still a kid then
peer pressure will usually cause one to do something they disfavor.
