In most cases, it is a scam. These people will stand on the corner and
wait for a good natured citizen to come along and just hand 'em cash... If
someone wants the guy to work, he will set up some time to meet, usually
early morning the next day, and never show up. Maybe, if he is really
hurting, he'll show up and work for a few hours...

Too many of my aquaintances have echoed much the same as I have noticed
on this board of late.
My In-laws told this guy outside of Smitty's to show up at DES and he
flipped them off.
I've heared rumors that people offering clean up work at their houses
have within a week been robbed.
It's a sad state of affairs when good natured people only trying to help
and feel for others are preyed upon by the unscrupulous.
My advice to them:

Go to the local Thrift store, get some semi-decent apparel, get a haircut
and buy a newsper or ripp one off, I'm sure Pat Murphy wont mind in that
instance.
If I can start from zilch, so can they.

one that was set previously. I'm sorry you won't be able to make it, but
a date HAD to be set.

Subject: Who am I...
Date: 05/03/88 Time: 05:36:39

For those who want to know who I am, here goes:
I am a professional writer and game designer who has worked in the valley
for 9 years now. The bulk of my work has been for Flying Buffalo in the
role playing game realm. Work I've done has been translated into French,
German, Swedish, Japanese, and will be translated into Spanish, Italian and
Finnish. Some people even contend my work's been translated into English,
but that's my editors... I have also done software game work and currently
have two games on the market: Bards Tale III: Thief of Fate and Wasteland.
In a review in the current issue of Computer Gaming World, the reviewer said
Wasteland would earn his vote for "best game of the year."
As a writer I have completed three novels. The first, Warrior: En
Garde, will appear this month from FASA and will be available in bookstores
all over the valley, like Waldenbooks and B. Daltons.
As a writer, and an American, I am outraged at Fred Weber's contempt
of the Constitution.
Oh yeah, as Jim White suggested, I've used a pseudonym on this board
before, but I'd not give it away. If Weber restrains me I'll need a cover.

Date: 05/03/88 Time: 05:40:34

Weber and his lawyers have made a new move that should shock and anger all
of us. He subpoenaed all of Tom Leykis' records concerning Tom's BBS. This
includes all messages public and private, names, addressed, telephone
numbers and passwords. I've not logged on to Tom's board yet this morning,
but I expect to find it's been dismantled by court order any time now.
Please pass the word along on this and other boards. Let's write
sponsors and let them know we don'tlike what's going on.
All that's needed for the victory of evil is for good people to
stand by and do nothing. We all enjoy BBSing. This is our chance to make
sure we can enjoy this freedom for as long as we want to.
Thanks,
Mike

While I have never listened to KFYI (I am stuck on KTAR), and have never
used TOm Leykis' BBS, such a thing as has been talked about here lately, if
true, shoul outrage any American. What I can't understand at all is a judge
sitting on a bench anywhere in the United States of America who would issue
such an order, or flaunt the basic constitutional rights of an American
citizen to freedom of expression in such an offhanded way.
Please, somebody, give me some info. WHat is the location of KFYI (on the
radio dial) and what is Tom's BBS #? Even if I disagreed with the man's
principles (and I don't kno that I do), I would still support him in this
travesty.

KFYI is at 910AM on the dial, and Tom's BBS is at 944-NEWS. Since the
security of the BBS's records are in question, you should use a nonstandard
password, and watch what you say, even in "private" mail.
From some comments that Barry Young made in the 5:00am hour on Monday in
response to a caller, it seems that KFYI is viewing this as an antitrust
action. But unless the people that are pressuring the advertisers are
working for another radio station, I don't see how.
Tom Leykis is liberal, atheist, and contraversial, so you probably won't
have much to agree with him on, Paul. He even manages to raise my blood
pressure from time to time. But he is very intelligent, and he does make
you think. He, while program director, brought the station the highest
ratings that it has ever had. The only reason he is in trouble is a
personality conflict between him and the general manager, Fred Weber.

Gee, if what Jim Lippard says is true, my mail to Tom will be a part of the
court record! Unbelievable - anyone see any swastikas of late? I can't
believe this stuff - who does Weber think he is anyway? Sheesh, if this
continues and Tom is fired or let go or whatever, I think a massive boycott
not only of all KFYI's sponsors would be called for, but I think it should
be said that no one - absolutely no one - should call into the station, for
if they are so willing to trample our constitutional rights, they should not
be in the "free speech" business.
Finally, no wonder Tom's BBS has been so busy today...

We may compare the future evolution of machines to the
evolution of life on dry land 400 million years ago. Life
may continue to expand by technobic autopoiesis. It may, in
staggeringly short time periods, penetrate vast regions of
the galaxy. Indeed, compared to former evolutionary
advances onto dry land and into the atmosphere, taking
hundreds of thousands of years, galactic habitation may
occur nearly instantaneously and take one hundred years.
This surmise is derived from the general phenomenon of
evolutionary acceleration.
From a long-term biospheric point of view, we may be less
important than our machines. "Fossils" of machines, as we
have seen, already exist in the solar system beyond the Earth.
From 1976 until the shortage of NASA funding
caused their connection with the autopoietic Earth to be
severed in the early 1980s, the Viking orbiters and landers
periodically surveyed the lonely stillness of the Martian
landscape. Other machine-extensions of the biosphere, in
the form of Soviet and U.S. spacecraft, orbiting various
celestial bodies, primarily the Earth, are still very much
connected to the biota. They are part of the system and in
fact are far less vulnerable to external threats than are
we as flesh-and-blood beings.
Neutron bombs, capable of destroying our human bodies, are
expected to leave the more durable machines system intact.
The future of our machines, provided they can remain part of
the autopoietic biosphere, is less bleak than that of
ourselves.
The Gaian biosphere with its multitudes and bizarre
histories will, we reckon, persist at least until the death
of the Sun. Our ancestors were apes, and if we saw them
today, we would probably wonder if they had escaped from
some local zoo. Our descendants may find themselves in a
similar predicament with machines, who will also be our
descendants. This being the case, we can only hope that
Butler's 1863 satiric comment:
We treat our horses, dogs, cattle and sheep, on the whole
with great kindness, we give them whatever experience
teaches us to be best for them, and there can be no
doubt that our use of meat has added to the happiness of
  the lower animals far more than it has detracted from it;
in like manner it is reasonable to suppose that the
machine will treat us kindly, for their existence is as
dependent upon ours as ours is upon the lower animals.
will not prove to be a simple statement of our technological
future.
