Ann your friend at the bank would have been better off if she had belonged
to a union. A union would not have allowed that to happen. Also if a worker
is not up to standards agreed upon by the union and the company, the company
can dismiss that employee. But they do have to prove that the employee is
not up to standards and that it is not the companys fault(lack of training,
poor supervision, etc). A very small percentage of unions may need to be
overhauled, but the vast majority or doing a good job. I feel if unions were
to disapear(sp) today, it would not be long before middle class America was
the smallest portion of our population. In other words we would have a very
large poor class slaving for a few rich cats, as Rod W. would say.

I agree that unions are good things, but they have suffered from several
flaws. They have had corruption, an bad evaluation of what's in their best
interest (sometimes crippling a company) and the government coming in and
allowing them to exclude other workers. I'm always a bit baffled by the
"scab" charges -- why is it that the union people have more of a right to
work than these poor unemployed saps who come in?

In David's last post, he made a good point. When my husband worked in calif.
- it was compulsory to use union help on almost all of his big jobs. Even in
those days, he had to pay laborers $7.00 an hour and most were not worth it.
He could fire him and send for another, but here again, they must be union
and almost all, just didn't do a thing and my husband ended up doing their
work and paying the guy. A plumber wouldn't pick up a piece of scrap lumber
if he was standing on it (union rules) - an electrician wouldn't even help
you put a window in if the were sitting around and a laborer wasn't
available etc. etc. Not counting their inflated wages - union fees,
workman's comp. - insurance - this caused a job to become highly inflated.
All suffered - the contractor, the buyer and the owner. The project was
totally policed by the union too and one infraction, the the intire job
would come to a stand still. This means that if my husband couldn't get good
union help for a laborer and brought in someone else he knew that was - he
was punished. He also never found any 'top drawer' skilled workers either
from the union. They all had a tendency to sit around every time they could,
knowing they would be paid anyway. In the 1950s - in Colorado, my husband
did belong to the union. He even became recording secretary for his
district. He saw so much corruption, that he left and made better money on
his own eventually. All that money that is in reserve for the insurance is
not kept track of or is the dues. =*--ANN--*=

I don't see why we have to have unions as they are now at least. Why can't
each individual be responsible for themselves? Lets say a plumber wanted
work - he charges $15 an hour - another might only ask for $13. HE has his
own resume of his skills and his own insurance. (proof of insurance when he
applied for the job - just like we must prove vehicle insurance now) Why, in
such cases, must the employer be responsible for all of this? Surely the guy
could adjust his wage price to include insurance. When he went to work for a
company (job) he could sign a paper stating that he was responsible. If
there was a union, then they would be responsible to go to the job site and
see that it was safe and keep checking on it as the job progressed. (for a
standard fee of course) Actually, it wouldn't be a union - but a business
for that purpose. The employer would have to have certain standards for the
job for protection of the men. (He may have insurance for himself too) This
would make the cost of a project considerable lower - thus lowering the
inflation of the country. A person could buy a house for instance at a
fairer price. All goods would go down. The unions were created to protect
the employee - but they are too over protected and the unions get fat -
therefore creating corruption. I agree with you that something is needed -
but the way it is now is hurting this country more than protecting the
workers! Any more comments? Do you have any ideas? =*--ANN--*=

In America you don't have to live the way someone else chooses (by vote or
otherwise), that is the whole point of the country and always has been. If
you don't like that idea you are in the wrong country. America is based on
tolerance of differing opinions and lifestyles. Anyone who can't stand to
see someone else make their own choices has most of the rest of the world to
choose from and should not be trying to ruin this country for everyone else.
Study the history and philosophy of the Western world (and America in
particular) with the same attention you give to Marx and Engels and you will
discover something infinitely more worthy of your affections.
See you later,

I can see what Ann is saying, like a locksmith, we are independent
contractors and we go by our reputation and pricing. I have to 'beat' work
off, (hey, that's the only thing I beat off) and get rid of clients.
I can see where dishwashers and all others, clerks, etc., can be
Independent contractors. A person who is going to wash dishes in an
establishment, can agree to do the job for X, can have any other competent
person do his job for him on certain days. If the person(s) do a bad job
then they lose the contract. Repetitions would develop. Same with clerks,
etc. Unions cause inflated prices, a big waste of time and money.

Both of you were complaining about how companies were taking advantage of
their employees. I try to point out that if the employees form unions they
could protect themselves from such abuse. The unions are made up of elected
officials. If the members allow their leaders to put such a strain on the
company that it puts the company in jeopary(sp)(their jobs are at stake
too) then that is their fault.

Something should be done to raise the lot of the poor and middle
income classes to reduce criminal activity. It appears to me that the rich
are getting richer and the poor, poorer. More prisons are not the answer.
It must be made easier for someone to acquire a home that will, in
thier mind, be relatively secure. This, in itself, will greatly reduce
tensions.
I still see the answer as something like the Jewish Kibbutzs (sp) or
the old W.P.A. In fact, as I said before, Rajneesh had a basically good
idea, although I think his intentions were a little less than altruistic.

Date: 05/29/88 Time: 11:33:13
On GEnie, there's been a bit of a discussion on defects in the
Chinon-brand disk drives installed in some 1040STs. Appearently, it doesn't
report the write-protect status in a fashion that TOS expects, and thus disk
changes are not properly recognized -- sometime a disk change isn't reported
when there was one, and sometimes a disk change is reported when the disk
never left the drive.
(A) Have you hear anything official from Atari on this? The Atari guy on
GEnie keeps saying "contact your local dealer."
(B) If not, what would it cost to exchange the Chinon drive for a new
one? (You can reply to this in email, if you prefer).
I'm getting quite tired of working around the disk-change bug, and I'd
like to get my 1040 fix. I seem to be one of the lucky ones that ended up
with one of the bumpkus drives.

PIES FLY AT ANNUAL "SHEMP FESTIVAL" IN LOUISIANA
DONALDSONVILLE, La. (MARCH 22) AP - About 50 wise guys,
morons and knuckleheads took less than a minute to hurl 500
pies at the climax of a tribute to an underrated stooge.
A few lamebrains showed up thinking it was another
Louisiana shrimp festival. But it was actually the third
annual "Shemp Festival," cooked up by three bayou country
fans of The Three Stooges.
Kirk Landry, 30, an assistant fire chief here, James B.
LeBlanc, 32, a mechanic, and Aaron Hebert, 32, originated
the event as a tribute to Shemp Howard, who died in 1955.
"We don't want to say that we like Shemp more than the
other stooges," Landry said. "But it's just that he is the
most underrated."
About 100 people attended the weekend festival.
In addition to Sunday's "Moron Pie Throw," events included
a "Hoi Polloi Ball," a parade led by a slice-of-pie float
and the crowning of the pie queen, chosen for being "the
most snooty, upper crust socialite hag who degenerates
(during the festival) into the most drunken, heathenistic
slime."
