Actually, I have been watching the situation in the Presbyterian church
with some interest, since it is fast becoming a fine example of everything
that is wrong in the world today. I'm not sure about the size of that
church, but, judging by the one I was in last night at a meeting of the New
Song Center for bereaved children, it must be one of the richest.
Anyway, the report that you read was that of a committee that prepared the
report for discussion at the general assembly of the church. That meets, I
think, this week. According to some very influential Presbyterians who were
interviewed, the report doesn't stand a chance of being adopted. If it
should be adopted, it would indicate that the church has completely
abandoned any principles related to Scripture, and should no longer even be
considered a church. (That last statement is my opinion.) Homosexual
ministers? Premarital and extramarital sex? "Free" love (that usually proves
to be the most expensive kind)? I somehow think that the vast majority of
Presbyterians will either throw that one out completely, or leave the church
for holier ground.

I would agree with that. If one cannot find happiness and joy in the smaller
things of life - day to day, maybe even minute to minute activity, then
there will be no happiness. Waiting for happiness is a losing game.

Hmmmmm.... sounds familier. Sounds like some men I've heard about!
Anyway, your post (#75525) was very nice and makes one wish things were like
that regarding the youths restraining from sex. BUT they are NOT like that
and your words will not change that fact. Our sexual urges during that
period of our lives is almost painful more than pleasurable. Talk about long
suffering! It's like telling someone that needs to urinate badly to wait!

But I read women's sex drive peaked around age 30! I got attacked on
another board when I suggested that 30 year old women should have sex with
18 year old boys/men to prevent conflicts caused by mismatched sex drives.
The 18 year old boys would put less sexual pressure on teenage girls who
often aren't ready for sex at that age (plus they'd be better lovers by the
time the girls their age ARE interested), and the 30 year old women would
put less pressure on the older men they usually have sex with who might not
be as easily aroused 24 hours a day. I KNOW the older men are going to jump
all over my case about how virile they are, but I have it on very good
authority that this can be a problem for the women!

"the doubters and the atheists camp,....that garbage pit of un-happy
people."
If we seemed happier would you find the pit more inviting? Maybe you just
didn't dive in on one of the better days or land near the happier garbage.
I do wonder about your choice of criteria for judging such an issue. If you
visited a hobo camp and found them all happily drunk on cheap wine would you
conclude that their's was the best lifestyle? I should think that there are
more telling issues, like maybe the facts behind religious doctrine and the
likelihood of there actually being a God, which would be of greater
influence.
Maybe believers do act happy a lot. If this happiness comes from the
belief that they are in with the supreme being then let them be happy. If
they are wrong, and have devoted their lives to the study of bogus dogmas
and crippling taboos against living whole, reasoned lives then their
"happiness" was the ignorant bliss of the dupe.
The happiest people I know are not bible thumpers, they are people who
live for the world that is known to exist and do it as well as they are
able.

Anyway, Michael: What makes you think that women in their 30's would want
some fumbling, young idiot that prematurely ejaculates? I had heard that
women's sex drives peak at 30 because they are more intense, not because
they are more aroused. I could be wrong on that one, though. I am sure
that the 30 years old may just be more available for sex. The kids are
older, the job more secure, that sort of thing. But, again, that is
assuming my assuption is correct.

Many oil companies are about to begin reviews to set 1991
budgets for their operations.
William L. Randol, an analyst at First Boston Corp., said
some companies might announce higher spending commitments to
search for new oil reserves.
Staying tuned to Congress has taken on a fresh urgency for
oil executives, who see in the Persian Gulf crisis an
opportunity to reclaim some of the political ground lost
after the disastrous Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska 18
months ago.
The blockade against Iraqi and Kuwaiti crude has
underscored dramatically the decline of the nation's oil
production, which has fallen to about 7 million barrels a
day.
The United States, which consumes about 16 million barrels
a day, has become more dependent on low-cost crude imports.
Daily crude imports were nearly 8 million barrels a day
before the Iraqi invasion on Aug. 2.

Please, Ann, look up "long-suffering" in the dictionary and compare it to
"patience". Don't bother to look up "suffering".
On a totally unrelated topic, do you believe in women's sufferage?
Yet another. The (King James) Bible relates an occurance where a bunch of
children gathered around Jesus (we thing of them crowding around, trying to
sit on his lap, etc.). The disciples began to shoo them away, but Jesus got
on their case and told them, "Suffer the little children to come unto me..."
Here's the question, now: Did Jesus want the children to suffer?

People have been murdering since the beginning of time as well (Gen.
4:8). But certainly no one is going to suggest that the church condone this
atrocity.
To suggest that the church embrace those things in which God
specifically calls 'abomination' is to make a mockery of God. And God has
told us in no uncertain terms that He will not be mocked.
That the church refuses to acknowledge these things as acceptable by no
means will keep anyone from doing those things if they so desire to do them.
Read Romans 1:18-32.

No, you are missing an important sentence in that message. "By their
fruits they shall be known." If one serves God, that love for Him will be
shown by their desire to act in accordance to His will. Forgiveness is not
a license to sin.
Read Romans chapters 7 and 8.
If one rejects Christ, it matters not whether or not they lead right or
moral lives. They have rejected the Son of the Most High God, the one who
came to earth to do for them what they could not do for themselves. They
have turned away from the one Way that leads to eternal life. It matters
not whether or not whether they lead pious or depraved lives. Their future
is eternal seperation from God at the judgment.

Because a translating dictionary says that one word in Language G can be
translated as two different words in Language E *does not* mean that the two
words in Language E are synonymous. It could mean that the word in Language
G can mean *either* of those two words. In fact, it often means that the
word has shades of both of the translated words.
As to the word in question, Strong's has three related entries in the Greek
Dictionary of the New Testament -- entries 3114-3116. Apparently from root
words meaning "long" and "passion".
As to the definition of patient in the English language, as the FIFTH sense
my dictionary says "able or willing to bear" == and the SIXTH entry as
"susceptible, admitting (of one interpretation)". Note that the latest
senses in my dictionary are the most recently to have been applied to the
English word.
For the definition of long-suffering, the dictionary says "long and patient
endurance of offense". Not just PATIENT. There are shades of meaning here,
these are not synonyms (just as the first four books of the New Testament
are not synoptic).
