I don't share Jeff's enthusiasm for this movie. The plot was transparent,
and Arnold's "acting" leaves something to be desired. It has many scenes
of graphic and gratuitous violence, some serious technical flaws. On the
other hand, the special effects were spectacular and extremely well done.
The makeup artists do deserve an Oscar for this movie. The premise of
the story was promising and would have made an exceptional plot line if
allowed to develop. Unfortunately, the writers decided to make this movie
a shoot-em-up just after the opening scenes, so the main plot device was
abandoned, except for a brief period mid-may in the movie.

I had to see this on opening night. They had trivia questions and gave
away tee-shirts to correct answerers. I got a button. Then they showed a
Bugs Bunny/Tasmanian Devil cartoon. The crowd was getting anxious.
Then Totall Recall started. Here are a few comments.
Hmm. First the pros. This is an extravaganza. You're looking at
60-80 million dollars worth of moviemaking. It's definitely not boring,
anyway. Second, the screenplay is based on a Philip K. Dick story (yeah
yeah, you know) and the movie is directed by Robocop's Paul Verhoeven. When
the plot twists, it twists good. There is lots and lots to see, and if you
suspend your critical faculties a little bit, and don't have too weak a
stomach, this should be a rip-roaring chunk o' fun.
Now the cons. Jeesh, you would think that with $80 million dollars,
they could make the Mars scenes look a BIT less like models. Especially
that little train -- the words "Tyco" and "Lionel" pop to mind. When you
actually sit down and try to think about the plot, it doesn't take long to
realize that there's too much skeleton and not enough meat. Can an
oxygenated Mars sustain life so far from the sun? (oop) You be the judge.
After a while, the "surprises" go too far - was that CHUCKY from Child's
Play hiding under that man's shirt? Get that baby some tissue, he's got
snot all over his face. Meanwhile, why are Arnie and his tough female friend
(a good character) CASUALLY STROLLING down the walkway of the reactor?
"Sorry, we knew you were dying, but the scenery was BREATHTAKING." What was
that indented HAND at the end? Is that an ON button? Does it take a
SPECIAL hand to operate, or will any ol' 4 or 5 fingered hand do?

Those are just a few questions. More; Where did Arnie get that HEAD?
Now this time I'm not spoiling anything, because you've all seen the
multi-purpose Rubik's Cube woman's head in the commercials. Where does a
lowly 2084 construction worker get a piece of specially created high
technology like that? WHAT IS THE EXPLANATION? And why does she say "Get
ready for a surprise?" Is that Divine? That would be surprising, but
otherwise it was expected after seeing it in the commercial. Hmm. What
else? Oh yes, the ending. Nick Ianuzzi already criticized that.
Otherwise, this is still a lot of fun. It's a bit long, but what the
heck. Here's what you get (In Joe Bob Briggs fashion): futuristic tough
female fu, eyeball boings, mutated dwarfs, faces, arms 'n boobs, human
target practice, arms a slicin', about 300 climaxes, and Ronny Cox playing
the exact same role he played in Robocop. (Other Robocopisms: Arnie goes
to a deserted building area right after he learns he has a secret past).

Blah, blah, blah. Go see this fun movie.

The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover (or whatever)

What a joke. This is supposed to be offensive, it's not even
interesting. There is some nifty symbolism (sure) in that people's clothes
change color when the enter different areas (red in the dining area of the
restaurant, pristine white in the bathroom, green in the kitchen), and there
are some interesting sets and costumes. But otherwise this is just a stupid

Mike, Cliff has pretty well summed up how I feel regarding your
posts. I don't disagree with your gun control position at all. In
fact, they are very much my own.
What I do object to is the way you choose to express yourself.
And I object to that for a reason you might not have considered. The
language, metaphors, allusions, and illusions actually don't bother me
a bit. In fact, I find them kind of amusing at times. I don't even
object to my son hearing or reading such language.
The thing I object to is the way you corrupt civil discourse. You
see, I want my sons to grow up believing that it is possible for
individuals to, in the words of Evan Mecham (YIKES!), "disagree without
being disagreeable." You might consider me to be in a "milk and
toasties with honey" dream world for holding this wish, but that, not
guns and macho "I can do whatever I want and you can't do a damn thing
about it" attitudes, is what the Constitution -- and Apollo -- are
REALLY built on.
In all the years I've been on Apollo, I don't think I've EVER seen
you disagree with someone on a friendly basis. THIS is what I object
to.
I'll not be [S]kipping any of your posts, Mike. I want to see if
you're mature enough to recognize when you're wrong and modify your
behavior so civil discourse can continue on this board.

Thanks for the gun low down of other countries. I find it strange that in
England the citizens, under certain conditions may own guns, yet the police
cannot carry guns??! Am I wrong?

Also, do you know if these other countries that you mentioned have a major
problem with drugs, dealers and gangs that we do? It seems that in this day
and age, we need our guns more than ever for protection when needed. The
police completely have their hands tied and certainly do not prevent crime
in the least. Our courts let harden criminals off on stupid technicalitys
thanks to shiester lawyers that are ruining a good system for mucho bucks.
If you have any statistics on any of this, please post it. Thanks.

Re: What is the best weapon for self defense...

Good Question there Hans.... Okay, here goes nothing, but I will try to
answer. First off, your best defense is your brain and your feet....
At the school I go to, they teach you a color code of awarness, and about
JDLR. If you are aware of your surroundings, you are less likely to fall
into a JDLR (Just Dosn't Look Right). However, should you be in condition
'white' (the lowest) and walk into trouble, try using your feet to escape if
at all possible. Forget about the MACHO image, even if you should be
carrying a weapon. It is your DUTY to look for another out!

They really stress this line of thought... the more training one
gets in weapons, the LESS likely they are to use one. Self defense does not
mean KILLING anyone.... it means SURVIVING an encounter. Idiots like that
M.M. guy on this board would rather have you be ignorant in such matters and
if you take such educational training... you are a 'Gun Nut'.

I hope I answerd your Question Mr. Glans

P.S. Some of the students in USMA's classes are Lawyers, Police, Judges,
Doctors and Men of the Cloth.

Is this what Hans Glans ment? If you should happen to get cornered
and you are facing deadly force and in fear of your life.... then a good
double-action (4 inch prefered) is your most reliable weapon. Dog said it
well... but I did not want to say it as this is the LAST resort to self
defense. Also knowing how to use it is a big plus, so you don't hurt
someone else by mistake.

Possibly in the future, for defense of my family. If I do get one, I plan on

Good advice, Cliff. It isn't often that I agree with you on guns, but I
really agree with you on this one (watch, Cliff is going to re-evaluate
his position). The reason I'm saying this, is because of the terrible
accident that occurred maybe 20 or so years ago in Phoenix when a father
killed his son entering a darkened house through a back window. If that man
had followed Cliff's advice, that tragedy would have never occurred. Yes,
we need to protect ourselves, but we also need to be educated in

Well I can tell you a lot about the fight on drugs in germany, I lived there
most of my life. I do have some facts on other countries.
A few years ago germany had the same problem with heroin as the US has today
with cocaine. The way they solved it goes like this:
First of they did not throw users into jail for becoming addictted to
something, they offered them free medical care and rehabilitation, at
absolutly no cost. There are no street gangs selling dope in germany to the
best of my knowledge, or atleast they are not organized enough to hear about
them. The reason the german government can offer free medical care and drug
rehabilitation, is because germany is a social democrocy, I am talking about
west germany now, not east germany. In the way that system is set up the
medical insurance is deducted from your pay just like taxes. I worked in
germany for a number of years before coming to the US, and my total payroll
deductions, including medical, unempoyment, and social security innsurance
never exceded what I pay in the US just for taxes and social security. The
system must work, since w.germany now is totally financing e. germany, and
they are not broke yet. The only reason I stated all of this extra
information, is to prove one pf my points, you have to reorganize at the
bottom of society, not start at the top. There still is a drug problem in
germany, but in noway as extensive a in the US. Another thing I have rarly
seen in germany and to the best of my knowledge are homeless people, which I
think is on of the biggest digraces our country has seen in a long time.

No Roger, I am not going to re-evaluate my position on self-defense
and the education that everyone should have. It is sad and sickening
when an accident happens. Education could prevent many of such accidents.
A father shooting a son has got to be one of the saddest.
Last year a elderly man backing into his garage, crushed his wife to
death. A month or so ago a truck driver crushed his wife against a loading
dock.... All accidents are sad and the saddest seem to be when a person
kills a member of their own family.

My point is, ACCIDENTS do happen... we can't outlaw ever item used
in such accidents, or there will be NOTHING left for humans to do. Better
education can fix some of them... there will still be accidents when you
have a fallible human in charge of any tool or machine.

Sorry for the space between messages had to do some urgent work. let me
continue. There is crime in germany though, but most of the crimes are not
comitted with firearms since laws are very harsh concerning crimes that
involve a firearm or any kind of weapon in germany the difference is that
you are guilty until proven inocent. That goes for crimes were you are
actually apprehended whilest commiting the crime. You see, if they catch you
red handed, no lawyer is going to get you out of doing time. They also dont
have a bail system. All this has its good and bad points, but believe me if
you commited a crime and are caught, you are going to do time in germany.
If we in the US could just take one of those things, and my favorite is
socilized medicine, we could save millions of people for finacial ruin every
year. The same goes for drug addicts, most will not go for treatment in the
US, because they just plain cant afford it, thats the bottomline here, WE
have to stop trying to make a buck of the missery of other people, and shoul
d try and have a little more compation towards our fellow human beings. I
think we could make medical insurance government funded and not go broke
over it, other countries in this world are doing it, why cant we, we're
supposetly a superpower, I think we should begin to prove that at home, not
the rest of the world. Lets feed our hungry and cure our sick before we cure
others. Thats what is going to have to happen here, if we want to bring our
beloved US of A back to what it once was. We should show the world what we
cant do. Make peace not war. That does not make me an antigun nut, I own one
