Rod's last post put it very well. It was bigotry pure and simple. 'Fear of
the un-known' etc. David - in the beginning they wanted power so that they
could stay there. By power, I meant to become a part of Oregon's political
system. They didn't want to, but was forced to or be forced out!
Dean - remember, the food poisening bit didn't occur until they had been
there many years and was only done by a few, not the commune people who did
not know what was going on.
Besides - you two only dwell on the negitive part of the commune. What about
all they acomplished as a group? They had no crime - everyone had a clean,
nice place to live - good food that was grown with their own hands. There
was no bigotry against each other - each was allowed to be what they are and
not looked down upon. They dwelled on life and love - of Bhagwan and each
other. They built a city of good size proportions. No pollution, no
corporations - no monthly bills for rent, food and utilities. They could go
to college or a school of their choice if that is what they wanted and the
commune paid for it. They made money off of 'free enterprise' by haing tours
of the commune. They didn't condemn to rest of the world and how they lived
or tried to convert anyone. They just wanted to be left alone. As far as
them being empty minded as worshiping Bhagwan - I find that no more
fanatical then some of our religious worship. =*--ANN--*=

MANY times when I talked to my daughter on the phone while she was in the
commune, I seethed with envy and wondered what I was doing here and not
there! Here I sat - surrounded by payments - insurance that is sky high, MTG
payments, utilities, thousands of hours a year to work to sustain our
material possessions. Stupid, freedom erroding laws, idiot politicians -
- the cost of groceries going up so much each year - cars choking the roads,
freeways being built to accomidate them - etc. etc. - and here she was,
without a care in the world - VERY happy and oozed love for life. I wanted
to go up there and see for myself - wondering if we could possiably live
like that. I'll be honest - I didn't have the guts to give up my way of life
- scared! Brain washed! Perhaps in time I would have. Unfortunately, it was
not my husband's cup of tea. IF I had not been married, I think I would have
eventually went there. Would I be excaping from the real world? You bet your
life I would be and be glad to do it. I still would, but there is no
Rajneesh Puram to go to and probably never will be one like it again in the
near future. Too bad. Paradice lost perhaps! =*--ANN--*=

For another view, see Spalding Gray's _Sex and Death to the Age 14_. One
of the essays describes an encounter with the Bhagwan in India.

forgot. It impressed me. I'll be more careful next time to notice the name

You missed my point entirely. I hardly think that such an important meeting
as that one was, had a place for egos! - on either side! Who gives a damn if
Raisa or Nancy gets the most spotlight from the press? They weren't there
for such nonesense. This isn't a Hollywood production - it's World Peace
they are trying to put together - our lives are in the balance. It's not a
time for egos. The meeting wasn't as publicized as was Nancy's getting the
best of Raisa. We vote these idiots into office and this is what we get in
return! Typical. If that 'button' is ever pushed - it will be because of
someone's ego. I don't care if they have to 'kiss arce' to aquire world
peace. If they have to do it, then do it! Here we sit, with a 'bullseye' at
our center and we focus on some little twits ego. Society amok as usual!

'A God fearing bigot'? Wonderful! Just what we need! This election, it seems
we do not have many choices does it? Do we choose a bigot or a religious
fanatic? The rest are non-discript and boring. But mark my words - Bush will
be the next president, bigot or not. Unless, of course, he's caught in a
motel room with a prositute posing for him or goes on a sea journey with his
secretary. I guess I'll just vote for Soupy Sales again. At least he is
funny/funnier than they are and will keep us laughing. That's what we need
is a great sense of humor regarding out politicians. =*--ANN--*=

Saw a great cartoon this morning in the Republic. It's where the Benson
cartoons usually are, but once in a while, someone else has that spot. I
thought it perfectly depicted how our society is. Picture the scene - a
guy is walking his dog in front of a 'Legalized Drugs' store. In the window
is Heroin, cocaine and crack for sale plus drug parfilnalia. In the alley,
right by the store stands a evil looking man in a trench coat - holding out
his coat for the guy to see the cigarettes he's trying to illegally peddle.
He says "Pssst! Buddy. Wanna buy a Marlboro?"

Date: 06/03/88 Time: 14:11:35

Now, on Apollo BBS.... "Safe Mail" almost as good as "Safe Sex".
Yes, soon no one will be able to see your mail if they happen to be in the
SYSOP's computer room or "Apollo Central".
How will this work you ask....? Well, Apollo will use the "GREEKING"
method. Greeking will show up on Apollo's monitor as XXXX for caps and
xxxx for all lower case, making any mail you send or receive completely
unreadable by ANYONE at Apollo Central. It will appear normal to you on
your monitor.
This should make users who wish to send private mail, feel comfortable
that no one is viewing it on the SYSOP's monitor... private mail that will
truly be private.
Example:
This is a test of private mail. Below is what Greeking looks like.
Xxxx xx x xxxx xx xxxxxxx xxxxx Xxxxx xx xxxx Xxxxxxxx xxxxx xxxxx

If you typed in the upper line in the P.O. the lower line is what I would
see if viewing it on my monitor.
Get together and choose a trusted user to visit my computer room and
verify what I say is true. I do not have a Command to turn Greeking off,
but of course, you will have to take my word for that.

Attention David Burkhart and James Hawley, this should solve the problem we
had a few weeks back.... do you agree?
