Mail from Melissa Dee
Date: 07/30/90 Time: 21:46:27
You're welcome! I hope Hawley will be able to bring it to you soon.
Missed you at the GT. Most of the people there were very straight and old.
None of the old crowd - Nick, JT, Cervelli, Peter, Zak, Jim L. etc.
It was interesting to meet some people I hadn't ever seen before like Paul
Savage and Ralph Blem to name a few.
Hey, let me know if Peter has any more projects that he is doing and needs
any performers. I need to start my performance career one of these days.
I had thought about coming over and asking you for something the other day,
in fact, since I haven't been working. In fact, I think I tried calling you
but you weren't home.
I guess I will try again sometime.

Your rebuttals miss the point: My age is not relevant. I never stated that
your pornographic stories were an accurate portrayal of your sex life. You
do not portray a character on a TV show, nor do your stories represent the
exploits of a specific fictional character. They are all written in first
person. While I do not expect the incidentals of the stories to be true,
nor even that you should necessarily have acted out any of the events in the
stories, there is nothing in the acts themselves to preclude their
existence; it is not as though you wrote about vampires or travelling to
Jupiter. The stories are written as erotica; you wrote them; they are
written in first person. This does not mean that they are anything except
fantasy; however, one does not ordinarily write sexual fantasies involving
things the author himself doesn't fantasize about. The stories presumably
celebrate sexual freedom; however you conceive of that. There is nothing
bashful or modest about them, and sex is not portrayed as something
shameful. Clearly, you do not consider your sexual fantasies private, since
you publish them (some of them, anyway). If I were an author of adventure
tales, and if the tales were not too outlandish and if I wrote them in first
person, I should not be very surprised to have someone ask me if I had
visted India or Africa. Your prim reserve regarding your own sexual
behavior is incongruous with your attitude as revealed by your work.
It goes beyond ordinary reserve. You seem positively insulted when I
suggest that you might actually engage in sex play similar to that which
takes place in your stories; as though you found the acts inherently sordid,
and sex itself an unpleasant but necessary fact of life.

I would, assuming that your stories are an accurate reflection of your own
sexual fantasies and habits, find your psychology abberant and disagreeable.
However, it would be even more peculiar and (dare I say it) perverse if it
turned out that you did NOT practice what you preach. If there is anything
more offensive than deviance, it is white bread pretending to be
pumpernickel.

Sleep is an illusion. Consciousness is discontinuous, only the intervals
are not ordinarily detectable. Sleep is not among the intervals; sleep is a
variety of consciousness.
I am going to fix myself a cup of tea.
Sleep seems like one of the intervals (only, the shortest catnap is far,
Far, FAR longer than any of the real intervals of non-consciousness), but it
is not. We perceive it as such because consciousness and memory are not
identical. We do not remember the consciousness of sleep because the
mechanisms of memory do not ordinarily lend themselves to the record of such
a state, except sometimes when we dream; which is itself a state
intermediate to that of "ordinary" consciousness and sleep-consciousness.
You may wonder what sleep-consciousness is like. It is very quiet. Time is
dilated enormously. Everything is still except for your consciousness. You
may not realize it but there are a number of processes cotemporaneous with
ordinary consciousness which are to some degree independent of it, and which
are certainly seperable from it, only when this happens, they stop. The
analogy is only figurative, of course, but "walking around your mind" you
"see" these things as a vast clutter; a sort of junkyard whose pieces you
can observe but cannot touch without using some of the processes, and when
you do this, of course, you are no longer in any position to see the
"junkyard" or apprehend its dreadful mess.
This is because the use of these processes (which are really integral with
"normal" consciousness) moves one out of sleep consciousness. It is very
difficult to use just one or two of the processes. They are somehow
interdependent with each other, so that the use of one entails the use of
others, like program segments calling subroutines. Either one is quickly
wafted into ordinary consciousness, or into an intermediate state.
You can also observe the "approach" of the edge of the next interval of
non-consciousness. Whether you describe this as a precipice you inexorably
walk toward, or whether you describe it as something which approaches you
inexorably, is of no consequence.
There are *things* that lurk there. I know, because I have "seen" them;
sometimes they become impatient and cross, ever so slightly, from an
interval of non-consciousness into the current segment of conciousness.
This is no reason for insomnia; the things dwell in the intervals, and the
intervals exist between waking segments of consciousness just as they do in
the intervals between sleep-consciousness segments. I have no knowledge of
their nature; I approach the end of the current segment, hit the edge, and
am "instantaneously" at the beginning of the next segment. The few
sightings I have had of them have been like, well, like seeing something out
of the corner of your eye for a split second. It is not enough really, to
form any impression. They could be nothing more malignant than the microbes
which live in the roots of your eyelashes, but of whose existance most
people remain ignorant. I have the feeling that the day I find out, though,
will be my last day on Earth, for good or ill.

Very interesting posts. At this instant I have not fully grasped those
things which you stated in your messages but they are very interesting, none
the less.
At one period in my life I found myself being able to go to the Debate
Chamber in my mind. It was a place in the brain where the nerve endings of
each of my senses pluse all other departments, i.e. actual experiences,
imagined experience, superstition, faith, logic, similar experience and some
more which I am too dreary-eyed to remember at the moment.
In any case, here I was listening to each branch trying to reach a decision
that would be carried out by my body. Even though the process seemed to be
in slow motion, perhaps mili-seconds passed.
I noted that if a decision did not have to be made immediately then a long
debate would ensue and the idea would either be acted upon or shelved until
a later period. The mind contains a file cabinet and the order things are
put in and taken out is in direct relation to what format you are using.
People who have a hard time making decisions usually run into more error
codes than codes that lead to a prompt decision. This could be caused by a
chemical reaction from something you ate or didn't eat. Too much of
something such as alcohol proves a point. Anyway, I was there and got to
see this process in action and have remembered it clearly all this while.

Although Jesus Himself said that "No man cometh unto the Father but by me",
and those of us who consider ourselves Christians believe this, the Bible
also states that we are not to judge another, since judgement belongs in the
house of the Lord. In other words, judgement is His alone. Personally, I
prefer to stress the positives that are inherent in the Christian belief,
not the possible negatives, since I believe that Christianity is a positive
belief.

I forgot to mention that I did see you on the video of past GT's. It was
clear from the tape that you would have brought an ineffable spirit to the
current GT. I thought it would be amusing to tape us watching old GT tapes

In 1982 Chris Zagar and I were trying to get a NEW BBS on line...We
had set a goal of July to do this feat. However, there were many setbacks
and failures when testing the first system. Seemed like we would never
filter out all the bugs. As the end of July grew near, we went into a
marathon testing and debugging frenzy in what we hoped would be a crash
proof system to compete with John Dykstras 'Az BBS' that was run on an
Apple. John had told me I could never get a BBS to run on a "TRASH-80" as
he called it. Well, on the late afternoon of July 31st we had a system that
we could not crash in our testing. We were in a GO mode and very excited...
However as we were about to put it on line, a big thunder and lightning
storm struck knocking out APS and almost our hopes for the night. The power
was restored in about an hour and we tried again... only to have another
storm roar by right over head. We pulled the system down again and
waited.... It was almost midnight and the storms were flashing lightning
bolts all over town. Finally I said the hell with it and up it came,
lightning and all 5 minutes before midnight July 31 st, 1982. Tom R. Slone
as I called my computer was the hardware and Apollo BBS was born!
As it turned out, we ran circles in speed around John's old Apple,
and what we thought was going to be just one summer of fun...turned into
a thing of pride that has lasted 8 years so far.
Thanks for the many friends it has made.

She is not only incredibly witty, she demolsishes atheism and

manages to do it with a soft feminine gentleness.
Beyond that, she belongs to the very small group of fun-loving

For months, she has been my ideal, but I have woirshipped her from

As for practical, I know of several C-64 BBSs and several TRS-80

Just for the record... John Dykstra and I were friends before

I also remember a 'desperate' SysOp who did not have an auto answer

If the speed of light is a constant relative to the motion of an observer,
then how is it that frequency shifts occur as the result of wave compression
or expansion caused by the motion of an observer toward or away from the
speed of light?
To whoever claimed that clocks have been shown to operate faster in an
airplane than on the ground, this effect is too small to be directly tested
for anything less than an interstellar journey.
I had no idea that relativity theory denies the existence of gravity as a
force acting at a distance. According to it, the sun exerts no force
whatsoever on the planets. They travel along geodesics in Einsteinian
space, as do all bodies which are negligibly affected by non-gravitational
forces (electromagnetic, subatomic...)

I am fairly tired at the moment but would like to comment even if I have

When light is travelling throughout the cosmos it is constantly being acted
upon by whatever forces are present. In deep space there would be less
forces to act upon light but even so light is always being pushed or shoved
one way or another thus bending it and causing a shift to the observer or
non-observer as the case may be.
The force of our sun's light would surely have an effect upon all bodies and
non bodies wherever and whenever it exists which is pretty much always or at
least for quite a while and quite a while to come. But even quite a while
is not long in eternity.
A force in motion has an effect on all other forces.
When I say non-bodies I mean not big planets or stars but particles some
minute and others only specks. Size is of course relative as even a very
small speck will appear large to an even smaller particle but how far it can
go into apparent nothingless is beyond my scope, that's for sure.
