That's a toughie. My natural response is to say that people should lay off
that stuff until the kid is old enough to consider it logically on his/her
own, but that's the very point where we all differ. It's ok to tell your kid
not to play in the street; the big trucks out there are very tangible and
real and it's absolutely guaranteed that serious harm will come if you don't
scare them enough to stay in the yard and out of the street; but when it
comes to eternal punishment, I have my doubts that that is equally valid.
Anyway, I'm sure many here could correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the
major Christian religions say that you can save yourself at pretty much any
point if you renounce the errors of your ways. Calvinism states that it's
already decided. So why scare the poor kid unnecessarily? If he wants to
believe that way, he can start believing it at any time.

My specialty is horse racing, chosen because there is no corporateness, no
professional racehorse. (of course, the horses may well not be having such a
good time and they do collect a number of injuries to amuse a crowd full of
people who would just as well go bet on greyhounds or turtles with numbers
painted on their shell...I'll be the first to admit that that scene is not
rosy.) However, I agree wholeheartedly with you on the professional part.
On the personal level, though, playing the sport of one's choice is a great
way to socialize, get exercize and work off normal amounts of hostility.

NO! I don't chew! Not even gum! Yuck, what a filthy habit!
I can recall some of my misspent younger days, when I worked construction
in a foundry, and everybody, me included, chewed a little tobacco in an
effort to keep the foundry dust from getting into our lungs. I think it was
sort of the lesser of two evils. Those were in my smoking days, and I still
hated the taste of that stuff.
I hope the smoking table is WAAAY in the back of the yard. See ya tomorrow.

The existence of a state religion in England is, after all, one of the
reasons for the persecution of the folks who fled to go to the United States
to establish their own state religion. re: Christmas displays: If I were a
Hindu, Jew, or even Moslem I would be offended if MY tax money was used to
create a display that glorified a religion other than my own. In fact, I
would see if I could get my religious symbols included in the appropriate
displays during the year.

Subject: emissions
Date: 07/27/90 Time: 12:34:00
There was an interesting article in the most recent issue of Reason magazine
about emissions. There is a researcher in Colorado who has built devices
which can test the emissions of automobiles in the time it takes them to
drive by the device. He has tested his device in urban areas, and found
that something like 10% of the cars produce 90% of the pollution. Older
cars are generally NOT responsible--it seems that people who take care of
their cars well enough to keep them operating for a decade or more also take
care of them well enough that they are not a major source of pollution. The
major pollution source is cars less than 10 years old which are not
maintained properly (and for these cars, the older the car the worse the
pollution). This researcher estimated that by getting rid of the emissions
testing stations and simply ticketing people who are major polluters (using
his devices and perhaps something like photoradar), states could (a) save a
huge amount of money and (b) actually reduce pollution significantly.

That last post is so true about older cars NOT being the pollutors.
Older cars are also easier to tune up. I took my 65 Barracuda to the test
station once just to try it out, and it was WAY under the needed compliance
level. But it does not have 100 little rubber hoses and 50 gadgets to keep
in working order. The newer cars work fine when they are new and everything
is working 100%. But in 8 years after the Arizona heat has dry rotted the
rubber, they fail something terrible. It is TOO costly for the owner of
these mid life cars to get them fixed. Besides, most mechanics can't even
fix them, as the 'smog' devises vary so much from model to model and year to
year..... you can't really learn them all. Government in all its wisdom,
have created cars that pollute worse because of failed pollution devises.
A Pollution devise needs to be 'SIMPLE' and 'STANDARD' for 'ALL'
cars. A road side drive by detection system for violation sounds better
then the current drive too and pollute while waiting in line system they now
have.

Alternate way to GT:
35TH Ave, north of Bell Road and South of Union Hills, there is only
one Red/Green light.. Turning West at this light (Grovers) will cut into
37th Ave and then you go South on 37th Ave to Danbury.
Or 43rd Ave to Grovers (at light and between Bell Road and Union
Hills, but this time turn East till you get to 37th Ave, then turn South.
You can still get though on Bell Road, but some people do not like
to travel in construction areas.

If this does not work then get a hand sledge and try again.

I was listening to a radio program today, and they were talking about
"Operation Rescue" out in California. Some of the people who had
participated in "Operation Rescue" and had been arrested were talking about
their court appearance. They said a number of things that amazed me. For
example, prior to appearing before the judge, they were given a list of
words they could not use in the court room. If they used any of the words,
they would be held in contempt of court and fined or imprisoned or both.
What were the words? I can't remember the whole list, but some of them were
"baby", "abortion", "church", "God", "kill". Isn't that amazing? It
sounded like something out of Nazi Germany. I didn't catch the whole
program, but it seemed the lady judge was definitely pro abortion and she
wasn't about to let justice get in the way of dealing with those who
disagreed with her.
