James:

What are you considering yourself intelligent IN ?

Intelligence as a collective summation of all knowledge and the ability
to manipulate and exchange it?

Or Intelligence as a result of a given talent(s) that have directed
your learning energies into a range of fields, being as diverse as your
interest?

Normally, irrational behaviour (perhaps rational depending on your own
objective viewpoint) can be awarded to you whenever someone reads a post
by you that they feel either threatened by (for various reasons) or
a post that degenerates 'them' as a collective 'group' .

A side issue to this question is what exactly do the scholars of past
and present attempt to define as intelligence?
From putting geometrical shapes in place within a given time period to
scoring a high percentile on a written exam...I wonder if anyone
can be judged by the same measuring stick. It doesn't work in a lot
of ways and does in others. Depends on the application. But with a world
with so much diversity, how does one become JUDGE ?

There is no good reason a woman-owned business should be treated any
differently than a man-owned business. But the people who advocate that
sort of special treatment are the same people who spread fraudulant
statistics about women being underpaid.

I think both JT and Ann are right about women's pay scales. On the
average, women with the same seniority and job get the same pay, BUT this is
only an average. It is quite probable that Ann has run into situations
where such inequity was present. Companies are getting away from these
practices for two reasons. One is that, of course, it is illegal. The
other is that it's just bad business. You *don't* want to alienate your
employees. That produces a high turnover, low moral, and that damages
productivity. It has been proven over and over that a happy employee is a
productive employee. I work at American Express, and they give office
parties and lunches every now and then. These cost them money, but the
increase in moral more than pays them back. Sadly, some companies still see
their employees as the enemy, which should be screwed any way that they can.
That's stupid, but nonetheless it happens.

fashion. In fact, very, very little do I believe in stastistic on the whole,
but you are forgetting that the situations I told (and others) you about

happening at all. It is rare that it happens to a man. Remember my first
post - I said that I wanted to be equal to man in every way in society. You
had ask me what society wouldn't let me do! I simply told you. I am more

If, as I believe, the urge to make a kind of music is as
much a characteristic of biology as our other fundamental
functions, there ought to be an explanation for it. Having
none at hand, I am free to make one up. The rhythmic sounds
might be the recapitulation of something else - an earliest
memory, a score for the transformation of inanimate, random
matter in chaos into the improbable, ordered dance of living
forms. Morowitz has presented the case, in thermodynamic
terms, for the hypothesis that a steady flow of energy from
the inexhaustible source of the sun to the unfillable sink
of outer space, by way of the earth, is mathematically
destined to cause the organization of matter into an
increasingly ordered state. The resulting balancing act
involves a ceaseless clustering of bonded atoms into
molecules of higher and higher complexity, and the emergence
of cycles for the storage and release of energy. In a
nonequilibrium steady state, which is postulated, the solar
energy would not just flow to the earth and radiate away; it
is thermodynamically inevitable that it must rearrange
matter into symmetry, away from probability, against
entropy, lifting it, so to speak, into a constantly changing
condition of rearrangement and molecular ornamentation. In
such a system, the outcome is a chancy kind of order, always

                   WORK I.D. SURRENDERS PERSONAL FREEDOMS
Editor:
I read with a mixture of interest and anxiety the letter by Robert D.
Park in the June 23 Republic touting the issuance of a national "Work ID"
card which, presumably, everyone of legal status would use to identify
him/herself as an employable person.
My interest was aroused because we need to explore solutions to the
problem of illegal aliens in the United States, and my anxiety arose because
we live in a free country.
It is probably true that a national identity card would make it easier
for employers to avoid hiring illegal aliens, but is it worth the price we
would pay as a free people?
The identification card would relegate working to the status of a
privilege granted to citizens and regulated by the state.
Already the Social Security system numbers us. Our Social Security
number follows us throughout our lives; it is used as a school ID number; it
appears on our driver's licenses; and it is widely used by credit-reporting
agencies to keep track of our bill-paying habits. This, to me, is sufficient
as a national work ID.

It still surprises me how easily a citizen of the United States is
willing to surrender a piece of freedom for expediency. And as public
attitudes change, I can't help but be reminded of a seduction - as each step
is taken and each small hurdle of conscience jumped, the next is easier and
more comfortable, until the original reason for resistance is forgotten.
Perhaps it's paranoia and much ado about nothing, but the idea of the
seduction prods me, and I can't help wondering if I have already forgotten
some good reason for resisting the authority of our burgeoning bureaucracy.

In 1977, earnings of women averaged 59 percent of men's earnings. This
number -- 59 cents -- has taken on almost religious significance for
feminists, who use it as a symbol of the "sexism" that is supposedly rampant
in our society. But, as I have pointed out here, it is unreasonable to
assume that the gap is entirely, or even mostly, due to discrimination. In
fact, in 1980, never-married women earned 89 percent of what never-married
men earned--so the difference in work choices associated with marriage
account for the vast majority of this differential.

What remains of the gap is the result of the sum total of all other factors,
including discrimination. Most of the other factors are not easily
quantified, but surely we can see that they are likely to account for a
great deal of the difference: women may be, on average, less aggressive in
pursuing their careers than men. Women may choose their careers, on
average, giving less weight than men to money and more to other factors such
as enjoyment of the work. Perhaps most importantly, marriage has not been
entirely accounted for: many women enter the job market not planning on a
lifelong career, but rather something to support them until they get
married. (We have only accounted for the difference among those who have
already gotten married, not among those who plan to.) So, although there
are instances of discrimination, it would not appear that they are terribly
widespread.

I thought your post RE: work IDs was great and I agree with you. You put it
simply and too the point. What a practical, sane solution. I go a step
farther - I'd get rid of "boarders"! But your way could work and would
benefit everyone. But alas, it's too good. It'll never be. People seem to be
afraid of letting the aliens in even in small numbers. Afraid they will take
jobs away from the citizens. Thats a bunch of hog wash - most citizens
wouldn't do most of the jobs the aliens will do. When we lived in Calif. -
down near Escondido in the avacado groves, the farmers had to use illegal
"wetback" labor because no one would work steady at that type of work.
Fortunately, at least everyone we knew who used them paid above average
scale and fed them good . I guess there is horror stories on the treatment
of the aliens, but we never saw it. -- ---ANN

Most of the stuff I've read/heard about Hitler said that he was born a
Jew, believed in Christianity, tried to find the Ark of the Covenant, and
also relied on the tarot to guide his battles. He also tried to locate
several codices of arcane origin to help the Nazi regime rule by not only
"Aryan Supremacy", but black magic. Only thing that I believe is that he was
a real menace in that he was a complete psychopath.

Certainly there are instances of women being discriminated against; there
are also instances of men being discriminated against (Paul Johnson, for
example). But the fact that people are discriminated against here and there
hardly means that women are "oppressed" or "not free."

From the May 3, 1987, New York Times Book Review:

To the Editor:
In her sympathetic review of my book "Intruders: The Incredible
Visitations at Copely Woods" (April 5), Bettyann Kevles makes an assertion I
would like to correct. After carefully outlining the admittedly bizarre UFO
abductions and enforced genetic experiments my book describes, she states
that all the victims of these experiences are white Americans. She wonders,
then, if this constitutes a racial bias. Since I had not felt the
obligation to disclose the race of anyone I dealt with in my book, I am
dismayed that the absence of this information led Ms. Kevles to assume the
subjects were, by default, white. In fact, the abductees I've worked with
include seven Hispanic victims as well as blacks, Europeans, Native
Americans and people of extremely varied ethnic and socioeconomic
background. Budd Hopkins
                                                           New York

Bettyann Kevles replies:
Perhaps this is an instance in which identification of the racial
composition of the victims might have been enlightening. The half-alien,
half-human hybrids Mr. Hopkins describes are all pink or gray, from which I
inferred that all of their human parents were white. I am pleased to learn
that a number of them were Hispanic-Americans or blacks.

If you don't know then go sit in the sun tomorror afternoon for an hour or
two. The design is all wrong, it is a wonder that life came about at all,
although what did come about wasn't very intelligent.
  That explains it.
