Well, since nobody guessed, nobody won. Harly had her first kitten about
7pm. A little red kitten. Then about 7:15 she had a black one. At 8:30
she had her third, a white one, and at 9:15 she had her last one, another
white one. They look like little mice! Harly seems to be doing fine as a
mother, licking them and letting them suck on her. All but the last white
one are healthy but the last one should make it alright.

Rod, you weren't "taught" how much sleep to get. The ideal amount varies
among individuals, ranging from 5 to 10 hours. The older the person, the
less sleep required.
Experiments in isolation from light, darkness, and timekeeping devices have
demonstrated that an approximately 24 hour day is maintained, and that sleep
patterns remain constant. How many hours of sleep a person requires is no
more a learned thing than eye color.

According to the linguistic school currently on top, human
beings are all born with a genetic endowment for recognizing
and formulating language. This must mean that we possess
genes for all kinds of information, with strands of special,
peculiarly human DNA for the discernment of meaning and
syntax. We must imagine the morphogenesis of deep
structures, built into our minds, for coding out, like
proteins, the parts of speech. Correct grammer (correct in
the logical, not fashionable, sense) is as much a biologic
characteristic of our species as feathers on birds.
If this is true, it would mean that the human mind is
preset, in some primary sense, to generate more than just
the parts of speech. Since everything else that we
recognize as human behavior derives from the central
mechanism of language, the same sets of genes are at least
indirectly responsible for governing such astonishing
behavior as in the concert hall, where hundreds of people
crowd together, silent, head-tilted, meditating, listening
to music as though receiving instructions, or in a gallery,
moving along slowly, peering, never looking at each other,
concentrating as though reading directions.
This view of things is compatible with the very old notion
that a framework for meaning is somehow built into our minds

at birth. We start our lives with templates, and attach to
them, as we go along, various things that fit. There are
neural centers for generating, spontaneously, numberless
hypotheses about the facts of life. We store up information
the way cells store energy. When we are lucky enough to
find a direct match between a receptor and a fact, there is
a deep explosion in the mind; the idea suddenly enlarges,
rounds up, bursts with new energy, and begins to replicate.
At times there are chains of reverberating explosions,
shaking everything: the imagination, as we say, is
staggered.
This system seems to be restricted to human beings, since
we are the only beings with language, although chimpanzees
may have the capability of manipulating symbols with a
certain syntax. The great difference between us and the
other animals may be the qualitative difference made by
speech. We live by making transformations of energy into
words, storing it up, and releasing it in controlled
explosions.

Rod's posts showed insensitivity, crash rudeness, and pure blasphemy. I
suppose, Ann, that that is his right, and its not my right to point out that
he is the one who continuously talks about "loving ones fellow man" and
"contributing to this world" while all he manages to contribute with posts
like that is hatred and distrust. Maybe, Ann, the blood of Jesus Christ is
not precious to you - fine. It is one of the most important things in
my life.
How about putting yourself in my position? What if someone got on here
and starting making gross remarks about women (since you've been talking
alot about that lately). How would you feel? Would you not say, "Hey, that
was just a little unnecessary, wasn't it?" What Rod said was not only
vulgar and sickening, but it was completely without value and merit. What
did it "contribute" to the conversation, or the over-all good of the world?
Zippo. Rod is intimidated by the person of Jesus. Jesus loved. Rod knows
he can't love the way Jesus did. So, he turns to making fun of Jesus'
voluntary sacrifice of his own life for others. How sad!
Rod, like I said when I first posted on this board - you hate God like
no one I've ever known. I don't hate you. I can't imagine what it would be
like to live life with God as your enemy. No thanks. What's neat is that I
can still care about what happens to you - how about in return? You've

Subject: Balance of power
Date: 07/15/87 Time: 21:38:42
It is amazing how liberals use "balance of power" as a smokescreen to
promote their political agenda. When liberals complain that "balance of
power" is in danger, what it means is that they're upset because a
liberal-dominated branch of government (whichever that happens to be in any
given situation) does not have absolute power. I have already cited the
hypocrisy surrounding Congressional Democrats' view of the Boland Amendment.
Here are two other examples, involving the Judiciary Branch.
Whenever Ronald Reagan or Edwin Meese criticizes the ideology of liberal
judicial activists, liberals hem and haw about the threat this poses to the
independence of the judiciary. Even to question the ideology of a William
Brennan or a Thurgood Marshall is to endanger our fragile democracy! But
now President Reagan has appointed Robert Bork, a conservative judge, to the
Supreme Court, and all of a sudden the liberals are demanding that the
Senate reject him on the basis of his ideology, saying it would alter the
"ideological balance" of the court (which now tilts ever so precariously
toward the liberals). Ed Meese's finding fault with the judicial philosophy
of Justice Brennan imperils the independence of the Judicial Branch, while
Ted Kennedy's subjecting Judge Bork to demagogic slander that rivals
McCarthy is perfectly acceptable, even desirable, to the liberal.
In California last November, three liberal Supreme Court justices were up
for reconfirmation, and a heated campaign was waged against them, based
primarily on their opposition to the death penalty. (One, Chief Justice

Rose Bird, had voted to overturn all of the more than 60 death sentences
that came before her, usually on an absurd procedural basis.) Among the
harshest critics of the Bird Court was Governor George Deukmejian, a
Republican. Again, we heard what a terrible threat this was to the
independence of the judiciary. Californians simply have no business
questioning the decisions of our Supreme Court justices! (At least as long
as they're liberal.) The three justices were voted out, and their
replacements are doing quite well, thank you. A few weeks after the
election, Toney Anaya, the lame-duck governor of New Mexico, commuted the
sentences of all the state's death row inmates, because he personally felt
the death penalty was wrong. He completely bypassed the judicial process
and imposed his beliefs on the state of New Mexico. Why didn't the liberals
condemn this as an arrogant abuse of power?
Please do not misunderstand me: Anaya and Kennedy were both acting well
within their legal rights as governor and senator. But so were Meese and
Deukmejian in criticizing liberal activist judges. For liberals, however,
legitimate exercise of power by conservatives are often grave threats to our
cherished system of checks and balances--while far shabbier (though still
legitimate) exercises of power by liberals are not.

James, just what type or form of grievences did you have in mind?
If vague, unsubstantiated, and very general claims are good enough for a
newspaper, why then are these assumed vague, unsubstantiated, and very
general claimes not good enough for you?
I am trying very hard to picture a personal experience as something vague,
or something unsubstantiated, or general.
I refused a job because the company wanted to know about my sexual life.
I was denied a raise at another job because I would not let my supervisor
fondle me.
I was not given a promotion due me because the forman of that particular
section said that as a woman I would not be able to handle the
responsibilities.
I was denied a job in which I passed every test because I was a woman. What
made me mad about this job was that there were women working there, it was
that the person in charge of hiring at that time (a man, by the way) did
not believe women should be working at this type of job.
These few examples that I have cited are vague as far as details are
concerned for the reason that these incidents did happen, they are a part of
my past, and I feel that I was able to share and, yet, maintain my privacy.

(from the book, "This Book Needs No Title", by R. Smullyan)
One of the human phenomena I find most disturbing is that of a person
whose system of thought is such that there is no possibility of his ever
finding out that he is wrong - even if he is. Any rational objection to his
system can be explained away by a rationalization within the system, whose
validity can be known only when one accepts the very premises of the system
which are in question. Consider some obvious examples:
1. A Calvinist who, when questioned as to the fundamental tenets of
Calvinism, will exclaim: "Of course you cannot see that I am right. Your
trouble is that you haven't been saved!"
2. A Dogmatic Theist who, when questioned as to God's existence, will
say: "Of course you cannot believe in God! You are too proud to admit the
existence of a being greater than yourself."
3. A believer in the existence of the Devil who will say: "Of course you
don't believe in the Devil. The first thing the Devil cleverly does is to
convince people he doesn't exist."
4. An Atheist who will say: "No rational argument I can give you will
convince you there is no God. You have a childish, superstitious need to
believe in one."
The interesting thing is that in the majority of cases, each of the
groups I have mentioned can easily see through the prejudices of the others.
And surely I must be in a similar category without realizing it. I wonder
what my prejudices could be?

Speechless animals cannot do this sort of thing, and they
are limited to single-stage transactions. They wander, as we
do, searching for facts to fit their sparser stock of
hypotheses, but when the receptor meets its match, there is
only a single thud. Without language, the energy that is
encoiled, springlike, inside information can only be used
once. The solitary wasp, Sphex, nearing her time of eggs,
travels aloft with a single theory about caterpillars. She
is, in fact, a winged receptor for caterpillars. Finding
one to match the hypothesis, she swoops, pins it, paralyzes
it, carrys it off, and descends to deposit it precisely in
front of the door of the round burrow (which, obsessed by a
different version of the same theory, she had prepared
beforehand). She drops the beast, enters the burrow,
inspects the interior for last-minute irregularities, then
comes out to pull it in for the egg-laying. It has the
orderly, stepwise look of a well thought-out business. But
if, while she is inside inspecting, you move the caterpillar
a short distance, she has a less sensible second thought
about the matter. She emerges, searches for a moment, finds
it, drags it back to the original spot, drops it again, and
runs inside to check the burrow again. If you move the
caterpillar again, she will repeat the program, and you can

Oh, I see, by the series of question marks you meant to indicate a blank to
be filled in. That wasn't clear to me. Sorry about my greatness!

Ann, the source of my statistics is "The 59-cent Fallacy: The Earnings Gap
Between Men and Women Can't Be Pinned on Discrimination," an article in the
September 1984 issue of Reason written by Professor of Economics Jennifer
Roback of Yale University. If you like, I can send you a copy of the
article.
Sandy, if your descriptions of the situations in which you have been
discriminated against are accurate, then I would say you have a reasonable
complaint. Without more details, however, I can't really draw any
conclusions, since your own conclusions about your own experiences may be
based on your own personal biases and you may be ignoring relevant details.

Subject: JT and Ann

It occured to me, this evening, that both JT and Ann are entirely correct.
Yes, some woman are discriminated against.....remember, John Lennon's
rendition of "Woman Are The Niggers Of The World?" Think about it and
understand that white skinned folks discriminate against brown skinned
people but even in a brown skinned country the woman are the lesser class,
the servant of the male ego, through physical strength. The only defense
the female has is her wits, her intellect, and it is usually developed early
in order to get a lead on her male and simply survive.
The usual male's way is brute strength and usually will do 'anything' for
sex from one of these females, even rape if they 'have' to.
On the other hand, JT is using the woman who is free of petty pressures
and one that knows her intelligence and how to use it. That woman is the
woman that can take over a country or whatever from just giving out a whif
of her intelligence and sexuality. Sex can slay.
But of course, JT may have only been pointing out the work a day woman who
has a goal and knows how to achieve it with her intelligence. The same for
a man, you must recognize you intelligence and plan for a better tomorrow,
if not for yourself, then for your children or relatives or just to be kind.
If you want a monument errected for yourself then the pigeons will more
than likely 'drop' on you but if you do it for the deed and the deed gets
done and no one knows who 'started it' then the big reward is that the world
will be a better, more sane place to dwell.
I'm getting off the subject and starting to ramble.

For thirty some earth years I certainally believed there was a 'god' who
created us and knew what was going to happen. I was comforted.
The first atheist I ever met was when I was 15 and I totally did not
believe that what he was proposing could be true. I sluffed it off.
Years later when I started questioning (it took a major event) all that I
held as true, I could not, nor could anyone else, answer many questions.
I had not, at the time, been exposed to science, having been kicked out of
science class in school.
I went through an interesting, and very happy, two weeks, the two weeks
after I determined there could not possibly be a male god figure that
created us. I went into a 'Mother and Father' theory and checked it out,
conmparing it to my previous beliefs.
It took two week to blow that theory apart, in that, if they were like our
Mother and Father then they were sure cruel. But it was nice for awhile.
The scientific method is the most logical and will bring more happy
rewards than that of a Big Male God who is allowing a 'tradegy' to be
enacted when true partying could be going on.
Yea, your my brother and your my sister....we are all equal parts of this,
OUR universe. There is NO inequality in the vast. There should only be
fun, games, sex and happiness while life does indeed exist.
Perhaps the period we are in now, in our evolution toward intelligent
beings, may be know as the '$hit age'. Just a thought.
Bye bye Birdie, see you in the stars, dudes.
Rod
