People will refer to something as "The bible of XXXXX" for the same
reason that people say, "Oh GOD! Not again!" It's a part of culture. I
don't have to believe in the bible's authority for me to be able to refer to
something as a "bible." I'm just making a point: "Other people regard
such-and-such grammar book as a source of authority."

In other words, I needn't believe the bible in order to note that many
people regard it as a source of authority.

     Got it, punk?

In a surprise, the UNO party has defeated the minions of Satan, the
Sandinistas in the first fair election held in Nicaragua in a long time.
Now the question is: Will Ortega relinquish power in two months ? If he
doesn't, what will the US do ? Will we invade Nic. as we did Panama to
install the legally elected president ? There is a precedent now for doing
such a thing ?

I am reading Abbie Hoffman's 1987 book, 'Steal This Urine Test'. I don't
always agree with Hoffman's viewpoint on peripheral issues, but he makes a
very good effort here at minimizing outside comments and sticking to the
book's main focus. I have learned a few things already. The poppies from
which opium is derived were once grown right here in Arizona, for instance.
He details a lot of information on how drug operations really work, in
contrast to the way the media portrays drug labs, dealers, users,
interdiction efforts, and pricing/profit issues. I have only read about 20
percent of the book so far. It costs $5.95 in paperback and is available
from the Royal Bookstore. It will also be availble from me as a loaner when
I finish reading it.

Subject: CLIFF/JUST SAY NO
Date: 02/27/90 Time: 01:24:31

The "Just say No" campaign came from the Reagan administration. The
beginnings of the gov't 'war on drugs' came from this "Just Say No"
propaganda.
Last week, two kids came up to me and asked if I'd like to buy a candy
bar. Part of this money, they explained, would aid the war on drugs. The
wrappers had "JUST SAY NO" emblazoned across them in big red letters.
I asked the older kid (about 12 or 13) if he had tried drugs. He admitted
he had sneaked some marijuana from his mom's stash on a few occasions.
Not only is the "Just say No" campaign non-effective, it is helping to
shape a country of snitches & hypocrites.
Catch phrases only help to sell products. By the way, I didn't buy the
candy. I'm not going to help the gov't sponsor a 'war' that has already
been lost. Directly or indirectly.

Sir, you are an apogenous, bovaristic, coprolalial, dasypygal, excerebrose,
facinorous, gnathonic, hircine, ithyphallic, jumentous, kyphotic, labrose,
mephitic, napiform, oligophrenial, papuliferous, quisquillian, rebarbative,
saponaceous, thersitical, unguinous, ventripotent, wlatsome, xylocephalous,
yirning, zoophyte.

Hang loose, bro'.

P.S. After seeing that somewhat cryptic message you left to Rod about "that
magazine," I decided that it was my duty as a loyal, patriotic American to
report you to the appropriate authorities. Your name is now on the list of
people suspected to be interested in subscribing to probably seditious
periodicals. As you well know, Dean, the government keeps many such lists
on us all...they're watching us all...they know when you've been good or
bad, so be good for goodness sake. These lists are cross-referenced, filed,
tabulated, computerized, sorted, shuffled, juggled, folded, stamped and
examined by three sworn witnesses, prior to being copied in triplicate, the
third copy of which is promptly shredded. Big Brother is watching you,
Dean...Uncle Sam is a stern taskmaster, and he doesn't approve of pseudonym
using Libertarian troublemakers. You think the people at Royal book store
sympathize? Think again, bucko! Royal Bookstore is run by government
stooges; every purchase is catalogued, every customer is
photographed...fingerprints are collected, hair collected and analyzed...

It was smart of you not to directly mention the name of the probably
seditious periodical...government spies and toadies are everywhere,
Everywhere, EVERYWHERE!!! The government routinely monitors local bulletin
boards for signs of rebellious malcontents, LIKE YOU, who are then promptly
added to the appropriate list(s). Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean
they're not out to get you! I suggest you go underground a while...use those
phony I.D.s based on the dead infant birth certificate ploy you got from The
Paper Trip; you know, the virgin sets you keep in your safe deposit
box...Fool! Do you REALLY think it's safe there? The government figures
that anything put into a safe deposit box must contain something of interest
at the very least; why else would people feel the need to HIDE it? What?
You don't trust banks? Good, good...but THEY know all about your concealed
hiding places...the tunnel, the bunker...it's all been wired for months now,
every word, recorded, indelibly. Your very THOUGHTS, Dean, are being
monitored at this very moment. While Jackie Gleason bellows at Art Carney,
secret rays are projected from the TV...the manufacturers are all in league
with the government...rays, Dean, probing your mind...they know that you're
DIFFERENT...and they don't like it! Pariah! It's only a matter of time
until they use the spores...

Apparently Ortega has stated that he will respect the will of the majority
of Nicaraguans. We can presume, or at least hope that he will keep his word
and step down. If he doesn't, I think that, while we could bring pressures
against him to do so, an invasion would be improper. I do not believe that
Panama set any precedent, since we had an interest in Panama that we do not
have in other South or Central American countries.
This situation, however, if it develops into a confrontation, could be a
litmus of just how imperialistic the Bush administration is.
In the same vein, if Panama is a precedent, how come we haven't invaded
Cuba yet? We still have a large Naval base there, don't we?

Both Panama and Nicaragua had free elections in which the party in power
was voted out. Noriega refused to step down. If Ortega does the same,
then we have established a precedent of interfering in the internal affairs
of another country. Cuba, as far as I know has never had a free election.

with twenty-five adjectives. If I were a zoophyte I would have no choice
but to hang loose, but that is not the case.
That alphabetical banquet containing dictionary eccentricities
featured garish, hieroglyphical, ill-bred, jejune, knotted, largish,
maladapted, nebulous, obfuscatory, polysyllabic, quizzical, recondite,
stultifying, turbid, unutterable, vertiginous, whorled, xenolithic,
yowling zealotry.
Thanks for reminding me about the problem of being on mailing lists
for subversive literature. I had decided to get a post office box to
receive it, so as to protect my security clearance, but hadn't decided
how to handle the post office requirement of an actual address for their
files. Now I can safely get all the anarchist, marxist, skinhead, deviant
literature there is. I just subscribe in your name and have it all mailed
to a post office box I rented in your name and your home address is on
file at the post office in case anyone should inquire. You obviously won't
mind since you made such fun of the idea that anyone could ever try to hold
a person's reading material against them in any way. You're right of
course, that would be like someone publicizing what video tapes a candidate
for office had rented. Never happen. Thanks again, and have a nice day.
