For a very illuminating "taste of the postmodern condition," take a look at
the recently finished office building on the northwest corner of Scottsdale
and Camelback. Definitely not minimalist.

I was doing some work in my attic the other day and I came
across an old newspaper from Chicago. It is dated, Thursday, April 8,
1943 and is the Chigaco Daily Tribune, The Worlds Greatest Newspaper.
The feature story is, "How To Get The Most Out Of Food". It
goes on to say, (1) Let the family decide how the food ration points
are to be spent. Daughter Susan may wish to use some of her points
for the canned peaches she dearly loves, and son Jim's plea for
cherries for a pie should be heard.
      (2) Set a nite time to plan meals. A guide like the menus which
appear every week in the Tribune can be helpful. It suggests ways of
spending points for meats, cheeses and processed foods to achieve a
balanced diet.
It goes on to say, Don't spend any of your ration points for
baby food unless you have a baby in the family. Little fellows like
this one (drawing of baby) shouldn't be deprived of their strained
vegetables by babyless families who like to use low-point infant foods
for soup.
48 points will buy 14 cans of baby food (2 cans a day for the
week), 14 points; a bottle of catsup, 10 points, a No. 2 can of salad
fruit, 16 points, plus 2 pounds dried beans, 8 points.

One might note, incidentally, the remarkable "colonization"
of sophisticated British intellectuals, who regard themselves
as independent and critical but in fact react to US power and
propaganda in a manner reminiscent of some of the more absurd
Anglophile Indian intellectuals under the Empire.
It is particularly important for people who hope to
influence government policy to be clear about these matters.
There is no point wasting time in patiently explaining to our
leaders that the policies they pursue are inconsistent with
the goals they profess; they know this well enough without
our help. Nor is there any reason to suppose that a
different group of leaders would react in any essentially
different way to the same institutional imperatives. It is
not a failure to understand a simple point so clear to us
that regularly leads the political leadership to commit the
same "error" over and over again.
Returning to Kennan's prescriptions, what means must we use
against our enemies who fall prey to the heresy that
threatens our resources? Kennan explains, in the same
briefing to the Ambassadors:
The final answer might be an unpleasant one, but...we
should not hesitate before police repression by the
local government. This is not shameful since the
Communists are essentially traitors... It is better to
have a strong regime in power than a liberal government
if it is indulgent and relaxed and penetrated by
     Communists.
Again, as policy becomes practice, the term "Communists"
takes on its technical sense in American political discourse,
referring to people who do not appreciate the sanctity of the
Fifth Freedom.
It is small wonder, then, that John F. Kennedy should have
held that "governments of the civil-military type of El
Salvador are the most effective in containing Communist
penetration in Latin America." This was after a military
coup overthrew a liberal civilian government, with US
approval, while the Kennedy Administration was organizing the
basic structure of the military and paramilitary "death
squads" that have massacred tens of thousands of civilians
since, within the framework of the Alliance for Progress -
in fact, the most lasting effect of that program apart from
its contributions to dependent development in the US
interest.
The concept of "Communism" was further elaborated by a
prestigious study group of the National Planning Association
and the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, headed by William Yandell
Elliot of Harvard, in 1955. The study observed, quite
accurately, that the primary threat of what they call
"Communism" is the economic transformation of the Communist
powers "in ways which reduce their willingness and ability
to complement the industrial economies of the West." This
insightful comment provides a good operational definition of
the term "Communism" as it is used in American political
discourse. If a government or popular movement is so evil as
to undertake a course of action of this sort, it at once
becomes an enemy. It has joined the "monolithic and ruthless
conspiracy" to steal what is ours, namely, their resources,
and by definition, it has been taken over by the Russians -
and we will act to ensure that it is, so that we may
legitimately proceed to terminate this scandal by subversion
or intervention, all with the noblest intent and in defense
of the highest values. "In other words," as the
Argentinian-Mexican writer Gregorio Selser explains with a
somewhat clearer vision, "the North American puritans meekly
sacrifice themselves to care for the flock, gobbling any
willful lamb that proved intractable to their protection."

You three obviously misunderstood my point. I was attacking the argument
that the majority should rule. This should not be the case when it violates
a minority's rights, as in the firearm example (which none of you
addressed). A far better argument, such as the one Taranto is using, is
that IGWT does not violate anyone's rights. This would also be the case
with a tax cut. However, if the majority wanted to, for example, ban
private property, this would be a clear violation of basic rights.
There must be a balance struck between individual rights and majority will
-- otherwise, we might as well accept the socialist argument of "the
greatest good for the greatest number" and submission of the individual to
the collective.

Here's a few interesting facts from a column in the December 5th Fortune
magazine:
o The Federal government would save about $60 billion a year if it abolished
all existing anti-poverty programs and just gave poor people enough cash to
bring them over the poverty line.
o Federal spending on occupational safety is positively correlated with the
number of workplace accidents.
o Family income rose more rapidly for black than whites during the Reagan
years.
o Nexis searches repeatedly demonstrate that the media use "ideologue" as a
synonym for "conservative."
o New York State law says employers may not inquire into job applicants'
past criminal behavior.

It just goes to show how little these people who claim judgement on
Christians really know about Christianity.
People like Rod and James *want* to create a platform of self-justification
based on someones religion vs their own ideals.
Just another way to escape their real intent.
Hawley's "No, YOU go first" message is proof that he is not interested
in seeing me or anyone else be civil...he's interested in taking a crap
on someone's name and pointing at the glorious mess he made.

Ann, as far as I know, Jesus was the SON of GOD at birth and had constant
contact and a pretty fair advantage over us scum-dogs. All of us
are basically the same creature inside...only through the blood of Christ
does God see us otherwise. Having Jesus in one's heart doesn't suddenly
make you just like him. Like the text says , it's a WALK through life.
We fail, we stumble and we pick ourselves up again and keep going. If being
a Christian made you immune to the world, it would be a waste of time here.
So many people on these boards can't wait and drool at the thought of
ripping into Christians for no other reason than to take a shit on the
person in an attempt to make them equal to the shit-er. Then, when one of
the Christians realizes his words mean nothing to them, he moves his
attentions onward to others with an ear. In the meantime, those old
shit-ers, still trying to justify shitting on someones name , keep poking
at the Christian and sudenly find they are now screaming UNFAIR! because
when the Christian gave them some of their own, they tasted their own Shit.
