I assume the FAA wants to identify that bloody mass of flesh
that hit the ground .......
Do you have to register or something as well everytime you take
a jump?
I would be shocked and stunned if someone fell through my roof.
I would quickly get over it though and would have something to tell my
grand-kids. What with the Government and all protecting the citizens of
these United States, there is not much excitement to be had anymore.

From January 1945, military and civilian officials of the
War and Navy departments argued for an extensive system of
US bases, curtailment of all foreign military aid and
military sales, training of Latin American military officers
and supply of arms to Latin America by the US under a
comprehensive military assistance program. While laying
these plans for "our little region over here which has never
bothered anybody," the US was in no mood to allow others
similar rights elsewhere, certainly not the USSR. Secretary
of State Byrnes in fact objected to these plans for Latin
America because it might prejudice US initiatives elsewhere
that he regarded as more important, in particular, in Greece
and Turkey, which "are our outposts" - on the borders of the
USSR, which had far more security concerns than the US. The
"outposts" were also intended to buttress US ambitions in the
crucial Middle East region with its incomparable energy
reserves, then passing into American hands.
Commenting on an array of material of this sort laying out
US plans, much of it classified and recently released,
Leffler notes that these moves were made while US officials
were "paying lip service to the United Nations and worrying
about the impact of regional agreements in the Western
Hemisphere on Soviet actions and American influence in
Europe." The problem was the one that concerned Stimson:
how to extend our own regional systems while dismantling all
others, particularly those of Britain and the USSR. The
same problems were arising in Europe, where the USSR observed
the unilateral US and British takeover in Italy, Belgium and
elsewhere with equanimity, later using this as a model for
its brutal takeover of Eastern Europe, to much outrage the
West - justified, but not lacking in hypocrisy. In chapter
4, we return to the more general concept of postwar "national
security" in which the plans just sketched for Latin America
were a small element.

And again I say, what was "not working" with the CHR SIG? True, there was
not an overabundance of input, but what there was was good quality stuff,
and I for one appreciated the place of shelter, where we could share the
good things of God without rancor or criticism or scorn from without the
camp, so to speak. Once more, I request that the Christian SIG be
reinstated, as is, without further delay.
How about the rest of the Christians on Apollo speaking up on this? All it
takes for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing. I'm not saying for
one minute that Cliff is evil. I know better than that. I am saying that the
reasoning behind the arbitrary closing of our SIG was from a source other
than Godly. I think it's time for those of us who appreciated the CHR SIG to
unite in protesting it's loss and requesting it's restoration. It's
existence was a large factor in my recent renewal of my $tatus. Now I am
wondering if my money was less than well spent. Please Cliff!

Subject: Worst prose contest
Date: 12/10/88 Time: 08:23:44
I am in search of the worst pieces of prose ever published. I am
interested in two categories in particular: single sentences, and essays
(of approximately 500-1,500 words). I have a strong nominee in each
category: a sentence in a policy guidebook just published by a prestigeous
and respected Washington think-tank, and an essay that was published in my
old college paper. Among the qualities that make bad prose are overuse of
jargon, convoluted sentence structure, awkward metaphors, incoherence,
inconsistency, logical leaps, and redundancy.
The essay will begin in the next message; here is the sentence:
"In reality, an approach that pursues all issues in reality pursues
none." -- from "Mandate for Leadership III: Policy Strategies for the
1990s," published by The Heritage Foundation, p. 498.

The Ludicrous Absurdity of Space Exploration
By Jim Badham
The seven astronauts who were fragmented in a space shuttle explosion
10 miles above Earth Tuesday were not the first and will not be the last to
lose their lives at the hands of the big boys' expensive toys. The dream
goes on, even if nightmarish visions intrude on the fun every so often.
Like others before them, the unfortunate astronauts were caught in the
wrong place at the wrong time and will be turned into heroes. And after an
appropriate period of national mourning, they will be called upon to serve
as the emotional launching pad for future flights.
Americans will be told to feel proud of the astronauts because they
died doing their duty. We will be told that they died for this great
nation and that in the spirit of America, they gave their all. It will be
made to appear that they would have climbed into that shuttle even knowing
the consequences to come. And somehow, this twisted vision of falling
debris will be co-opted by our president to become part of the intravenous
drip of pompous patriotism coursing through the gullible veins of American
dreamers.
I am sure that those astronauts gave their all and that they were all
good and decent men and women. But why were they up there in the first
place?
The space program is touted as the key to unlocking the secrets of the
universe. We act as if the answers to the generally deteriorating
situation here on earth is written in the stars. We search the solar system
for signs of live. We know that the moon is a high-jumper's haven, that
Saturn is extremely photogenic, and that Uranus has been bombarded by
asteroids and planets and may have been volcanic at one time [sic].
We are looking for live on other planets when we so often fail to
contact the life we have here on earth. People walk around afraid of
contacting their neighbors. Families fall apart. The dispossessed kill
themselves and others. The rivers are poisoned, the jails are full, and
even the rain doesn't wash us clean.
Meanwhile, a perilously balanced doctrine of mutually assured nuclear
destruction keeps the peace as President Reagan reaassures [sic] us that
technology will lead the way from the woods.
We are risk-takers, I am told. We are curious. We need to know. We
are human. Yet we are very selective in what we determine is worth knowing.
We want to know what is "out there." We delineate everything with our
reductive, deductive obsession with facts. We are fanatics about measuring
and then and [sic] keeping track of our measurements.
I submit that we are using technology and the power over our
environment that it seems lend [sic] as a hedge against a very real fear the
fear [sic] that we are absolutely out of control of our own destinies.
How free are any of us to truly shape our own future? The honest
answer to that question is extremely frightening. But we know that reality
viscerally if not consciously, rides along with us through every day, urging
us to take solace and comfort in events such as space shuttle launches.
We get the thrill, the illusion that we are moving forward into the future,
that we have the ferocious beasts of impotence and doubt firmly by the
horns.
But what are we going to do when we move to space or contact
extraterrestial [sic] life? We will probably try to usurp their resources
and change their language and customs. If they look like E.T. we will sell
them some facial cream.
If they refuse to buy or fail to see the need to change their
appearance, we will deprive them of whatever good we might do for them. We
will not love them, unless it is on our conditions.
We are scared to death here on our own little planet. Will we find
security by taking custody of the universe? Why, I wonder, are we so busy
running around space in pursuit of our answers? What is it that we hope to
find "out there?"
The Earth is a perfect world. We have everything we need right here to
live wonderful lives. The rains fall, watering jungles and farms. Animals
are arranged in a very sensible hierarchy [sic], naturally in balance of
numbers and in harmony with their environment. And we have a mind that is
capable of revealing to us secrets far more interesting than which screw
caused the space shuttle to fall or what type of rock is embedded in
Uranus's newly discovered craters [sic].
People say that man is naturally curious. But in the modern, western
world, his fascination is solely with those things external to himself.
It is easier to pretend to control a universe [sic] than to deal with
the demons swirling in human beings. So we close the internal file and set
about discovering things.
We are fascinated by the stars; therefore, we must conquer them. We
are astounded by Mt. Everest, and we must climb it. Western man is not
satisfied with anything until he has conquered it.
When Tibetan Buddhists travel to Mount Kailash, which lies west of
Everest in the Himalayan range and is the center of the universe in their
particular version of things, they do not climb it. Rather, they bow down
and pray. The big goal is to circumnavigate the mountain and to apprreciate
it but not to conquer it.
The network news showed us endles [sic] details Tuesday of the launch
and ensuing explosion, assuring us that they would get to the bottom of
things. With charts and models and 10 different newscasters, we were taken
through the technological hocus-pocus in the interest of "knowing what
happened." The way we're headed, we'll never know.

The geopolitical conception that underlies Kennan's
nutshell presentation of US foreign policy had been
elaborated during the war by the War and Peace Studies
project of the Council on Foreign Relations, whose thoughts
on the suppression of war aims and on "elbow room" were cited
earlier. These high-level sessions took place from
1939-1945, producing extensive plans for the postwar period.
Their concern was to elaborate the requirements of the
United States "in a world in which it proposes to hold
unquestioned power." It was clear by the early 1940s that
the US would emerge from the war in a position of
unparalleled dominance, initiating a period in which it would
be the "hegemonic power in a sytem of world order," in the
words of an elite group 30 years later. The group developed
the concept of the "Grand Area," understood to be a region
subordinated to the needs of the US economy. As one
participant put it, the Grand Area was a region
"strategically necessary for world control." A geopolitical
analysis concluded that the Grand Area must include the
Western Hemisphere, the Far East, and the former British
empire, then being dismantled and opened to US penetration
and control - an exercise referred to as "anti-imperialism"
in much of the literature.
As the war proceeded, it became clear that Western Europe
would join the Grand Area as well as the oil-producing
regions of the Middle East, where US control expanded at the
expense of its major rivals, France and Britain, a process
continued in the postwar period. Specific plans were
outlined for particular regions, and institutional structures
were proposed for the Grand Area, which was regarded as a
nucleus or model that could be extended, optimally to a
global system. It is in this context that Kennan's proposals
should be understood.

Okay, I'll give you a break. In my reality, the human animal is
in its baby stage. We do not really know what reality is in our
current stage of development. We think we know but what we do know
can be written on the head of a pin. What we do not know could fill
the Library of Congress and then some.
Humans think they are above all other animals. This is a
natural condition when you consider that an ignorant animal thinks
such thoughts. Humans can be duped into ANYTHING.
Humans easily become slaves when government paper money is at
stake. Humans give their health and their lives for green paper.
Humans made their biggest mistake when they started covering
their bodies with dead animal hides. Now we are like turtles without

the first to die if a natural disaster happened. Our species would

The story of Jesus in the New Testament of the Holy Bible is
somewhat confusing to say the least. When I decided to check out this
countries religion and the questions, why am I here and who am I, I stole a
Bible. It was a great big one with a white cover.
In my room, I had no bed, just a big white, fake bear skin rug. I
used candles for light and had a stand at the head of my sleeping area and I
kept my candles there.
In the evening, the year being 1967, winter season, I took my big
bible into my room and prepared myself for some long reading and study. I
was young and like most people, did not really know much of anything, nor
had I previously thought of anything much. I opened up the book and
logically I started from the first page......I read and read and I must
admit, I had to skip some of the begats because it was getting to the point
of being ridiculous. I soon started getting into some meat with the tribes
of our elders. I must point out that I was young and sensitive so when I
got a bit further into the old testament, I began freaking out on the
situations described. In fact as anyone who has taken LSD can tell you, the
sensitivites one feels are magnified 1000 fold. Well, to shorten this, I
felt really bad from the evil I found myself reading.
I said, to hell with that so I opened the book to the New Testament
and started reading from there. On the first page I found peace and love.
In fact I became overwhelmed with those feelings. Meanings started hitting
the old gulliver and sinking in. I thought, I've found it, I've found it.
(TO BE CONTINUED)
