I see there is no justice in this world! For the last two years I've heard
nothing but how awful my Tandy 1000 is as a computer! Now I'm getting it for
buying a Sanyo! I truly thought I'd never get teased again - but I see that
was wrong. I should have bought a top of the line IBM and paid through the
nose! Naw! I don't want one! This is top of the line and all I'd ever want

This poor, faithful pile of electronic junk I'm going to sell for $1,200!
All kidding aside, I've loved this computer and it has done it's job well. I
just want to go on to bigger and greater things and this one is limited. But
one of the major reasons I did not buy an up-graded Tandy is Radio Shack
it's self! The software is poor and scanty at best and none of the personnal
knows one hoot about any of it! Also, the parts and the repair work is too
high and you're at their mercy. I.E. One time I wanted to buy an up-graded
keyboard on sale for $70 - a great buy. But then I found out the comverter
that fit on the end of the cord cost $168. That to me, is false advertizing
and I passed. They also are false on the software in general. They lead you
to belive most of the stuff has been converted for Tandy - they just put a
sticker on the cover and charge more. For one thing - it does not have to be
converted because it's IBM compatable. Their software is so limited because
they will not carry IBM. But the computer itself, I have no complaints at
all. I bought from Cliff because I trust him - he will support me and give
me help when I need it. Besides, he has the very same system and that speaks
for itself. Wanna buy a good computer? Ha ha. -=*) ANN (*=-

                            ODE TO MENTAL HEALTH
The office is quiet and deserted.
No life is anywhere to be seen.
The one that use to be in there all of the time,
Has turned sour pussed, cranky and mean.

In fact, she doesn't even want to play any games,
Or use the word processor, the data base and such.
Police Quest, King's Quest doesn't interest her at all.
Nor Gapper or Lode Runner does she want to touch.

Everything has become so slow and tedious.
Only 16 colors to work with - how tiring, boring and droll.
If something doesn't come about soon and fast,
She'll just go outside and jump in a hole.

The ancient rack and the pains of hell could not be any worse,
than the horrible torture she must go through,
waiting, waiting, ever patient.
An eternity - for 'you-know-who'!

A patient person is not me!
Won't you show a little mercy?

It is obvious that pools kill. Since their function is trivial, rather than
essential, it is clear that pools should be banned in the United States.

Of course, when pools are outlawed, only outlaws will own pools.

They'll have to pry my cold, dead fingers out of my pool when I drown.

I'm the NPA!

Pools don't kill people: substandard fences kill people.

You can't hug your children with nuclear arms.

I think there should be a one-year moratorium on the importation of pools
into this country. Domestically manufactured pools, however, are OK.

Friends don't let friends dive drunk.

Just say no to water.

Safety first: wear a life preserver, no riding on the bow, please deposit

In letters, Gacy comes across as quite sane. Immediately after his
arrest there was much talk about "split personalities", with Gacy claiming
'Bad Jack' did the killing, and he (meaning Gacy) would wake up in the
morning to find a freshly raped & strangled male corpse on the living room
floor. Gacy claims he buried the bodies because he wasn't going to take the
rap for something 'Bad Jack' did.
This claim is questionable at best. Experts' opinions were
inconclusive, and Gacy's lawyers wouldn't let their client take the stand.
Interestingly enough, Gacy all but drew a map to the corpses with his
last killing. Whereas his first 32 victims were male prostitutes &
runaways (for the most part), the last victim lived in his neighborhood and
there were witnesses who saw him with Gacy immediately before the kid
vanished. (The kid went looking for Gacy, as Gacy had offered him a summer
job in his construction business.) According to Gacy, this was his way of
setting up 'Bad Jack' to stop the killing. According to the police, Gacy
got overconfident & sloppy.
In any case, Gacy was convicted of multiple counts of murder, and is
serving a multitude of life & 21 year sentences. Gacy will never be
paroled, no matter what Bush said in his dirty campaign tactics.
I started writing to Gacy after running across his address in the
"Celebrity Address Book" at the library. (He was listed right after Zsa Zsa
Gabor.) The fact he was a clown, paints Disney characters & other
children-type paintings fascinated me considering he murdered young men.
Gacy refuses to discuss the murders with anyone.

It shouldn't be all that surprising. There are two primary factors in such
a dichotomy (murder of young boys vs. clowns, Disney, etc.):

One is the obvious possibility that such behavior was a deliberate disguise
dictated by his criminal cunning. If you are going to avoid conviction, you
must avoid suspicion. This was done by the selection of strangers as
victims, and by appearing to be a lover (in the platonic sense) of
children.

A further possibility, is the well known phenomenon of the "Imp of the
perverse." What is more evilly perverse than such a contrast?

If any psychologist or psychiatrics will tell you
that angry people are dangerous, then he should also tell
you that anger is an emotion. Also that every emotion
has a threshold trigger that when passed causes the
individual to react to the external stimulus around him.
That thru continual excitation of the threshold trigger
an individuals threshold can be lowered to the point
that he reacts to stimuli normally ignored. Therefore
angry people can be created by the environment and people
around them. Using these premises an angry person is
reacting to a dangerous environment around him/her.
So anyone can be made dangerous even if he/she is not
predisposed to such emotional reactions.

A federal judge has awarded 10.4 million dollars in damages to Alpo
Petfoods after ruling that Ralston Purina made false advertising claims
touting the benifits of its Puppy Chow. Ralston said its Puppy Chow diet
helped reduce the indidence of degenerative joint disease and canine hip
dysplasia, which is incurable.
"With the exception of Ralston's own faulty research, there is no valid
scientific support for the proposition that the nutritional balance in a
dog's diet can affect" hip joint conditions, U.S. District Judge Stanley
Sporkin said in a 54 page ruling.
Sporkin also found that Alpo made false claims when it advertised that
veterinarians preferred its
product 2-1 over the leading brand (made by Ralston). Sporkin said the
firm "lacked substantiation" for the assertion, which was based on a company
survey. Sporkin didn't order Alpo to pay damages, but he enjoined both
firms from engaging in false advertising.

Ralston spokesman Patrick Farrell, who claimed that the judge failed to
grasp the facts, said that the decision would have "a chilling effect on
corporate research" if allowed to stand.

So, how come we haven't heard about these guys in the past 6 months? I
guess Bush was too busy banning assault weapons to care about some hostages.

Anyway, why don't we do like the Soviets (yup, the did SOMETHING right):

When they had a few of their people taken hostage in Lebanon a couple of
years back, they found out who was directly involved (not as hard as you
might think), and grabbed a bunch of family members of those who had
participated in or lead the hostage taking efforts. They grabbed about
three times as many of the family members as Soviet subjects that were
kidnapped.

THEN, they started torturing those family members, and let this information
be widely known in the fanatic circles in Lebanon. The Soviet subjects were
promptly released, upon which the Soviets released the SURVIVING family
members they had grabbed.

THEN, (yes, it gets better) using information from the now-released
hostages, they tracked down most of the hostage takers and had them
assasinated, leaving only a few participants in hiding to retell this story
from their side. Needless to say, we haven't heard of any Soviets taken
hostage lately.

Hmmm.....maybe the Israeli's are really being very civilized about this.....

It occured to me that James Taranto was uncharacteristically reticent in his
comment. This puzzled me, until I realised that he was simply emulating his
political masters, and their art of ambiguous rhetoric.

When asked what he thought of the current crisis, and (implicitly) how we
should respond, his reply was "I disapprove of both kidnapping and murder."

Interestingly enough, this statement can be interpreted two different ways
depending on your viewpoint. Those who condemn strong action and who
condemn Israel will interpret it as a form of disapproval of Israeli action
and, in fact, any retaliatory action which the U.S. might take outside of
the normal channels of law.
However, if popular sentiment eventually proves to be in favor of Israel,
and in favor of strong, necessarily unconventional action by the U.S., he
can always say that his statement refered to the actions of the terrorists,
who, after all, kidnap and murder as a matter of ordinary operating policy.

Perhaps Mr. Taranto would care to elucidate his position.

My idea is simply this, and we have the fire power in place to do it.
Have a bomber flyover of every Muslim temple in the country of Lebanon, and
one over the city of Beirut every 15 minutes around the clock. WHile we are
doing this, inform the Lebanese that they have exactly 24 hours to release

Heck no, If I had wasted 20 Shots the score would be a lot lower.
Fact is, I did not hit the silhouette exactly right. Remember this is
defensive shooting from differant angles and distances in a very few
seconds. Example... In one we have to drop to the kneel and shoot two to
the body in 2 & 1/2 seconds. Then you have to hit within an area for ten
points, another might get you a nine, and another a seven... or a ZERO. You
do not have a black bulls eye to shoot at. Most bad guys refuse to wear
them anyway.
In another one we have to shoot two, then do a total reload and
shoot two more. You have 12 seconds to do this in... And you must
have good hits to get any points.
This is not a slow fire course where you have pleanty of time to
take a good aim. This is combat/defensive type shooting.

Savage, however, is proving as true to his name as his namesake, Rep. Gus
Savage, D-Ill. To call for the murder of innocent people is evil enough,
but to call for the bombings of places of worship is downright satanic.
If we are going to bomb Muslim temples to punish terrorists, then Moslems
would be equally justified if they were to bomb Paul Savage's church in

Subject: U.S. react/Lebanon
Date: 08/02/89 Time: 20:35:50

Here is my suggestion:

The U.S. needs to assemble approximately 12 teams, each composed of 4-6
highly trained and motivated individuals. Every individual on these teams
is to have a seperate specialty in counter-terrorist action (i.e. weapons,
communications, explosives, etc.). These teams are to be independent and
have no knowledge of the other teams.

After thorough training and detailed briefing, these teams are to be
dispatched with a few specific goals, to be carried out as best the
individual teams see fit. Such goals might include the assasination of
specific targeted leaders, the apprehension of individuals for later trial
in U.S., the locating and forcible release of hostages.

The teams are to be very independent, depending on the U.S. only for an
occasional infusion of funds to procure arms, supplies, transportation, safe
houses, etc. In addition, the tactics employed by the various teams should
differ sufficiently to keep the enemy off base.

The advantages to this approach are that few if any innocent individuals
will be hurt, the U.S. can overtly disassociate itself from the teams'
activities, the expenses will be trivial, the success should be great, and
the teams' effectiveness should increase with time. The disadvantage is
that the teams will have minimal direct supervision (or micro-management).

According to local news briefs, Iran has little if any true government,
few U.S. contacts, and those are very un-influential, a rabble army
and very little organization.
SO what we are left with is a few bone-heads "Bagging for money" any
foreign diplomat ..preferrably U.S. since we don't shoot terrorists.
They've gone from Hostages for demands to Hostages for Holy money..
supplied by other groups who'll pay the individual(s) money to keep
the hostage.

My Question is why for the love of God, do we even HAVE an embassy
or diplomats over there in the first place?
That's like placing chickens in a fox pen. Is there anyone who can
supply a rational reason , if not official reason for this?
Here's the scenario: Here's 15 important men. We're placing them in
your Government-less country to talk about peace. If you capture
them we'll do little. If you kill them we'll send the 6th & 7th
fleets over to intimidate you. If that doesn't work, we'll blow a few
of your airlines out of the sky and then pay the living relatives
60 grand apiece for the priviledge of doing so.
If that doesn't convince you to stop grabbing hostages, we'll send over
15 more and start again.
Isn't that special?
Test the Titan's on Tehran. Let's see if the Soviets applaud us then.

HEre's a moral dilemma for you majors in ACTION vs NEGOTIATIONS.

Question # 1:
Would, if the event dictated, you kill your wife of loved one to save
the lives of ten others? In this action, you can argue it by the
action of ignoring your wifes needs to take care of the ten..and she
dies...something you considered. You have foreknowledge that if you
attempt to save the 10, she will almost certainly die.

Question # 2:
Would you vote in a survey by the WHitehouse (HAH HAH HAH) [Consider this
as if they *DID] to blow Iran into a large parking lot, no holds barred,
total and complete annihilation to prevent and stem further and continued
outbreaks of jet bombings, hostage taking and murders over a period of
time?
Would you vote (YES! Nuke the Rag-head bastards)
or
would you vote (No ! Try diplomacy again.......)

Question # 3:
Do you beleive that given the track record of diplomatic relations in the
past, that a tactical and surgical strike on terrorist base camps will
(A) Worsen the occurences of "terrorism"
(B) SLow it down

(C) HAlt terrorism completely
(D) Repeat history from the F1-11 bombing on Lebanon.

Question #4:

Do you beleive that the nation of Iran is composed of;
(A) 80% ANti-American nationals
(B) 100% Anti-AMerican Nationals
(C) 10 % Anti-American Nationals
(D) Your choice percentage here

I beleive that:
Question #1: I'd save my loved one.
Question #2: Nuke them after they kill another hostage.
Question #3: D
Question #4: A

So my last Question, #5 is:

Is it justifiable to kill 100% for the 80% rotten eggs ?

If I read the terrorists correctly, and we followed the scenario I
suggested, we would not have to drop one bomb or take one life.
To date, all we have done is mouth words, and not very strong words at
that, at least not to the terrorist mentality.
However, if they could hear the roar of a hundred American jets flying over
their precious homeland every 15 minutes around the clock, and were told in
no uncertain terms that they had X number of hours of life left unless they
released every American under their hand, I really believe that we would see
some of the fastest Arabs the world has ever seen. I think that just the
heavy threat of retaliation would be sufficient.
In the final analysis, what have we to lose? Diplomacy certainly isn't
working. If they believe in the heavier club rules, let's show them who has
the biggest guns!

We're just asking for trouble. It would be safer to hold diplomatic
relationships at a distance and not put people in a position for kidnapping
and hangings. Iran needs to 'grow up' and if and when it aquires a sane

Re: "the apprehension of individuals for later trial in U.S."

Most of our courts today are a joke. There is very little justice if any.
Even terrorists could buy their way to freedom. History, even recent
history, proves this to be true. You got the money; you walk. You don't
got the money; you do time. Being guilty or not guilty usually has little
to do with it.

What you are advocating is that the United States become just like the
terrorists, only on a grand scale. In effect, you want us to take the
entire population of Lebanon hostage, and threaten their murder if our
demands are not met. In the first place, this is morally reprehensible.
Justice is not served by threatening the murder of innocent people. In the
second place, it is tactically foolish. What if the terrorists call our
bluff? Are we really going to turn Lebanon into a "parking lot"? If we do
not, the message to the terrorists is that they have nothing to fear from
the United States. If we do, we have committed one of the worst atrocities
in history.  Your plan only works if the terrorists do not call our bluff;
if they do, the results will be disastrous no matter what. And even if you
plan were successful, there is no reason to think its effects would work
forever; sooner or later there would be more terror, and we'd be forced to
do the same thing again. And eventually, one of the terrorist groups would
call our bluff. You really ought to sit down and think about the
implications of the policy you are proposing.

hang?
Why is it, we the most powerful country in the world let little 3rd

Maybe we should just knock the snot out of them and be done with it

Two truckers, their faces hidden behind screens, told members of Congress on
Wednesday that it has become common for trucks that haul fresh food to east
coast supermarkets to return with a load of fresh refuse. They estimated
that hundreds of trucks a day "backhaul" baled municipal refuse from New
York to Ohio along Interstate 80.
"It's a dream commodity," one witness said, "because you're not responsible
for anything."
A photograph of trucks lined up at a landfill near Youngstown, Ohio, clearly
showed some refrigerated units that run the other direction with meat and
produce from Midwestern farms and stockyards bound for east coast
supermarkets.
"No one in my area can run them back empty and stay in business," said the
vice-president of an unidentified trucking firm. "We believe that as long
as trucks are steamed out before loading, they are safe and sanitary."
If trash cargoes are banned, he predicted (threatened), food prices will go
up.

Yes Michael, I know what a surface to air missile is. I also know what fear
is, and that is the main weapon of the terrorists. It is also the only
language they understand. We are not necessarily dealing with well armed,
albeit rational people here. We are dealing with a bunch of rag-tag,
wild-eyed hoodlums. As a rule, they do not have access to such sophisticated
weaponry, and it is dobtful that the government of the contries involved
would support them to the point of launching missiles in defense of their
"holy" cause. I think the government, in self defense, would put the
pressure on the terrorist factions to release hostages, and quickly.

But then, what would you call the murder of American citizens in order to
make a point with Israel?
It's sort of like dealing with the Missouri mule. You have to treat them
with kindness and understanding. First, however, it is necessary to get
their attention. To do this, you get the biggest club you can find, and
whack them right between the eyes.
If the only language a band of terrorists understand is the language of
fear, that's the language in which to communicate with them.

I say the answer is to take ALL Americans out of that country - stop ALL
exports - all help in any way. Just maybe if their government suffers they
will do something themselves - which is their responsibility anyway. I
wouldn't be surprise to find that this country ships them weapons. And I'm
sure we send them grain and produce.

The murder of a few Americans is a crime of far less magnitude than would be
the murder (or threat to murder) millions of innocent Lebanese. The
terrorists deserve to be treated with the same brutality that they show
toward the innocent. That means we need good intelligence on these people,
so we can single out those responsible and deal with them swiftly and
harshly. Military action is also appropriate against nations that
perpetrate terrorism; the attack on Libya in 1986 is an example. I think
there are ways to combat terrorism without setting out to kill innocent
people. If there were not, the answer would be to do nothing.

I was reading a short article in Britannica about the Coriolis effect. I
came across the following statement:

"...the angular velocity of rotation of the Earth is a function of latitude
(the velocity is essentially zero at the poles and it attains a maximum
value at the equator)."

Now aside from being redundant ("the angular velocity of rotation"), it is
manifestly false. Each and every point on the Earth has an angular velocity
of 2pi radians/24 hours, or 360 degrees/24 hours, if you prefer. It is the
linear velocity which varies with latitude in this manner (objects on the
equator must travel through a greater distance in the same time as objects
at the pole, and therefore must travel faster).

I thought I might convince the people at Britannica to give me a new set, in
exchange for this information. Alas, the edition I discovered the error in
was printed in 1975, and subsequent to that time, the error has been
corrected.

Lovebirds are about 6" long, and come in a variety of
