Well, Beachum CLAIMS that the cost to the taxpayers would be offset by a
system of indentured servitude he has proposed to take some of the burden
off the criminal justice system and prisons. Under this proposal, prisoners
accused of non-violent misdemeanor crimes (possession of small amounts of
smack, etc.) would plead guilty in exchange for a period of electronically
supervised labor, either for industry or privately, as janitors, sewer
maintenence workers, footstools ,ashtrays, etc.
The money saved in place of their wages would then be used to fund this, and
other government programs, which otherwise would end up costing taxpayers
millions of dollars.

Subject: Bob T./gimme da ball
Date: 08/20/89 Time: 02:50:16
"Gimme da ball" is a slang expression which had its etymological origins in
Haiti during the "Baby Doc" Duvalier years. The "Ton-Ton Macoute" (I
probably misspelled this) were Duvalier's secret police force, and they
were known for their ruthless, sadistic treatment of anyone deemed an enemy
of the state. To make an example of the really outstanding troublemakers,
they would chop the head off the victim, wrap it up in Harris tweed, and
give it to unsuspecting children to use when playing soccer through the
streets of Port au Prince. Thus the phrase "Gimme da ball, man" (pronounced
"gymda bowl, mahn") acquired a sinister ambiguity.
Haitian emmigrants, using the phrase in Miami (Florida) as a way of warning
rival drug gangs off of their turf, spread usage of the phrase to visiting
Jewish tourists, who assumed that it was simply another colorful native
phrase meaning "How can I serve you?"
From there, the tourists took the phrase back to New England, where in Maine
and Rhode Island it was quickly picked up by their teen-age children, who
used it to describe the taste of clam chowder (don't ask me why!)
From there, the etymological chain becomes confused, until we find the
phrase popping up in pro basketball circles in the 1970's, where Kareem
Abdul Jabbar (then known as Cassius Clay, prior to his conversion to the
Muslim religion) used it to confuse sportscasters.

The man who was shot had no weapon, other than his hands. He also had no
prior record. He apparently was sensitive, artistic, and from a decent
family.
You people place little value on human life, as apparently did the officer.
Most police officers are armed with nightsticks and mace. Either of those
would have been a reasonable response. I also believe it would be wise for
female officers on patrol in high crime areas to have partners, or to
request assistance prior to stopping a vehicle.

Subject: Dan Rather
Date: 08/20/89 Time: 06:34:29
United Press International --
Viewers of the CBS Evening News on Friday -- at least those who own
satellite dishes -- were shocked to see Dan Rather apparently sniffing
"Liquid Paper".
Several times throughout Friday's broadcast, during the commercial breaks,
Rather could be seen dabbing white-out on his notes, and then vigorously
inhaling the fumes from the still wet paper. During the commercial breaks,
transmission is maintained by the news studio, but is only visible to
viewers with a direct satellite link.
Rather, visibly shaken, maintained that the whole incident was "a terrible
misunderstanding." Explains Rather, "I had forgotten my contact lenses, and
it became necessary for me to correct certain errors in my notes. Being
extremely farsighted, I held them close to my face so that I could see
them."
Later in the broadcast, during a live report from Japan on the new Prime
Minister, Rather, apparently unaware that his microphone was still on, could
be heard to mutter "They say he's pillowed half the Orient."
Says Rather, "I was trying to make out my next line on the teleprompter, and
again, because I had forgotten my contacts, could not see very well what was
written. I read it aloud to myself, thinking the mike was dead, and
misread the line. It actually said, 'Japan is the pillar of the Orient',
but it came out the other way. I'm terribly sorry."

Your right there - they do want to string up a cop for killing someone in
the line of duty. I think it's basically the News Media that stirs things up
with the public. If a policeman even fires at someone - it's on the front
page - and usually slanted against the cop. Then the police dept. puts the
guy out of work until there's a hearing etc. I have no great love for the
police dept. but sometimes they are treated totally unfair. Our criminals
get all the breaks. -=*) ANN (*=-

What difference does it make that the man who was shot "apparently was
sensitive, artistic, and from a decent family"? Is it OK to shoot people
who are instensitive, uncreative, and from indecent families? What about
people who are sensitive and artistic, but from indecent families? Or
people who are insensitive, uncreative, and from decent families? (What is
a "decent family," anyway?)
I place a great deal of value on human life. But you and I apparently
differ in that I do not only value the lives of people who are "sensitive,
artistic, and from a decent family."

Here is a situation that might have turned *REAL* ugly had you been
equipped with a weapon and used it. Some will say that in such a case
it's quite clear "It's either YOU or them". For arguments sake,
this is not known until it's either too late or too soon.
It's hard to say what I might have done in the same situation. KNowing I
have a weapon handy at all times in my vehicle. I'd like to think I would
have waited..then again I probably wouldn't have once they sat on
my HOOD!
I would have pulled it out at that time..but when the youth actually got
into the car..he would have been facing the business end of the barrel.
I'd like to hear what Cliff would have done in a similiar
situation...Your comments on what your actions would be will be weighed
with previous statements. I'm looking for your honest response, Cliff.
This isn't an anti-Cliff nor an anti-gun issue. It's a perfect illustration
of the middle ground a lot of these gun training centers refuse to
acknowledge. No one can be trained to tell the future. If Mike had a gun
in the car..he might have shot someone needlessly. After shooting one of
them, it's hard to say if one or more of them wasn't armed as well.

YOu're assuming a lot in your deadly force post. Was the man who was shot
"merely" doing what has been written? How are you to judge this officer
when you yourself were not present at the time it happened?
Are you using the newsmedia as a prosecuting attorney and claiming no
need for a jury. WHat's written in the paper MUST be the facts?
I haven't read the article in question, although I doubt whole-heartedly
that the victim was just running up to him looking innocuous (sp).
If a trained law-enforcement officer pulled his weapon and fired...
I'm sure just about anyone else would too. Especially if the man were
weilding something..
Who knows, the man may in reality have been intending to do the officer
a great deal of harm. Are you going to take a second-hand account
and place a judgement against someone on that alone?
Or are you merely commenting on how horrible and wrong it sounds when
read from the pages of the Enquirer or whatever paper it was.
???

Well Mike, That is a good question... One never really knows what he
will do in such a situation. About the time someone would have deposited
themselves on my hood, I probably would have politely let them know I was
armed.... and if someone still forced their way into my car and my sphere
of physical influence, they would be seeing the business end of my revolver.
Now again, if the guy was big and I thought I was going to get my weapon
taken away from me... I would fire!
In honesty, I think at first sight of the weapon, I would have seen
elbows and @$$holes.
Again, one never knows and the situation does vary. I do keep my
car/truck doors locked when out in my vehicle.
Never point your weapon at a person unless you are willing to use
it. In a bluff, they may take it away from you and shoot you with your own
gun.

Are we talking about the same word? Acording to the dictionary a bum is
1. A tramp; hobo.
2. A person who avoids work and seeks to live off others.
3. A person who preforms poorly; incompetent.
What I don't understand is what my spiritual convictions have to do with
another persons performance or habits.
It is my suspicion that you are so negative toward Christianity that you
will find fault with anything that bears the name whether justified or not.
But I can understand that. Jesus said the world hated him and will also
hate anyone who follows after him. For me to say "bums do not exist" just
because I am a Christian would be telling an untruth.
Lighten up dude!

It was a mistake to ever place females in this position in the first place.
If I ever need help from the police, I hope they don't send a 5 foot 100
pound petite female to help me out.

If it were me that was being harrassed by the gang members, I know
what I would do. When the kid entered my vehicle (I keep a red & black

he came from a decent or an indedcent family.
Lastly, I would ask him just how creative he was.
