Also...the climate gives good vibes, but EVERYONE jumps in and there
just are not enough customers to go around... How many computer stores can
you have? So what happens, cut rate prices to get people in because the
supply is bigger than the demand.
Have you knoticed how many little and big shopping centers there
are, Investors have gone CRAZY, and that does not happen in a depressed

Jim is correct that the trade deficit figures are meaningless. I'll come
back to that; let me deal with your message point by point.
You say "put more Americans out of decent paying jobs, and created the
poorest climate for the working people of this coountry [sic] than has been
experienced in years!" You'll find that difficult to support. Reagan has
added 17 million new jobs (11 million in the last five years alone). And as
Bush said in his acceptance speech, these are good jobs with salaries
averaging around $22,000 (I can't recall the exact figure). Two-thirds of
the jobs have gone to women. Moreover, working people are no longer faced
with interest rates over 20%, making buying a home or a car nearly
impossible. Nor are they faced with double-digit inflation, which steals
from their pockets every moment by making their saving less valuable and
cost of living higher.
Now onto trade. First, Japan's economy hasn't been that healthy in recent
years, but never mind. More important is whether we really are losing some
sort of war with Japan and other countries which export to this country.
I should note that better quality and less expensive imports are hardly a
burden to Americans. Moreover, it forces American companies to improve
their efficiency, which helps consumers. But a more fundamental question
is, are the statistics accurate? Are we a debtor nation, and do we really
have a trade deficit?

First, the trade deficit. It is a meaningless number, arrived at through a
bunch of mumbo-jumbo that really has little relevance to inflows and
outflows. In 1986, we got some $20 billion more in income from our foreign
investments than we payed to foreigners from their investments in the U.S.
Are we consuming more than we produce? In 1986, Total personal consumption
plus government purchases of goods and services as a percentage of Gross
National Product was 87.2%. As a percentage of Net National Production,
97.1% -- in other words, consumption was less than production. I'm sure
Jim, if he has time (or perhaps JT or B. Dog) could point out more flaws.
The "debtor nation" statistic is even sillier. Does owning your house mean
someone owes something to you? Of course not -- yet if a Japanese firm owns
a building in LA, it is included in the liability side of the balance. Even
sillier, they are included at purchase price. So a building in Tokyo owned
by an American firm which was bought in 1960 for $1 million is put on the
asset side, while that building in LA, bought in 1980 for $50 million, is
put on the liability side. Yet that Tokyo building could be sold for $200
million now, while the LA building probably hasn't appreciated nearly as
much. There are other problems -- for instance, US gold reserves are still
recorded at the old gold standard price of $42.22 and ounce, so the asset is
listed as worth $11.06 billion. Yet at today's prices, it is worth closer
to $110 billion. The U.S. may be a debtor nation, and it may have a trade
deficit. But the silly statistics give us no insight into the issue.
Moreover, the evidence suggests that foreign investment and selling of good
imports helps America more than it hurts her.

As David said previously, the 'trade deficit' just shows the country that
people will buy whatever they (we) like. So what - maybe the American
businesses and industries should at least take a look at the other countries
where we are in a 'deficit', and see how they are working. We may not be
able to pay the low salaries as some Third World nations, but I am sure that
there is 'fat' in businesses, as in gov't, that could be cut to make the
business run better and much more efficient. As for the investment by
foreigners here, that just proves that the US economy is still a vibrant
economy; one where foreigners can invest their money (as we can) and make
money on it. If that wasn't the case, all the Japanese investors would have
gone somewhere else to put their money. If we were to listen closely to the
Democrats and believe them, it would sound like 1980 again - but it is not
1980 again! And, there is nothing to worry about if all the foreign
investors were to call in their American debts and demand payment - it would
be much more costly to them to do that. Remember, we are essentially the
Japanese defense (outside of their 'self-defense' forces). We have an
aircraft carrier in Yokohama, several wings of Air Force fighter aircraft
there, as well as Marines. If the 'debtor nation' bit were real, and all
debts were called in by them, the Japanese would have to wake up and begin
paying their 'fair' share for defense immediately. No America, no US
military presence there for their benefit. We cannot return to isolationist
times - the interdependent world economy will prohibit that.

Later... Pat

Why? So that the few who really run the show can continue to fatten their

When one considers that, in spite of statistics, which can be made to say
anything the statistician wants them to say, the cost of living today has
far outrun the increases in income, (and in my case the decrease due to
retirement, I must say no, I am not better off than I was 8 years ago.
I cana also find many still in the work force who can say the same thing.
Seems to me that the only ones who are better off are those who "had it" in
the firrst place, since those are the ones toward whom Reaganomics are
aimed. (If I stated that poorly, you know what I mean anyway, I hope.)

Paul,

You complain about our trade deficit, but take a look at the parking lots
of companies that are union....full of Japanese cars. You drive by a
GM/Ford/Chrysler plant and you think you're in Japan. My aunt is like you,
an avid unionist (belongs to the bakers union in KC) but when she buys her
pastery goods, she goes to stores that truck their stuff in from
Nebraska...a non-union bakery state. Why? Because it's cheaper.

And yes, more American's are working than ever before. No longer are the
unemployment and welfare lines 3 blocks long....like they were under
Carter's administration (when you get old, your mind starts failing and you
forget these things ). True, more Americans are finding that they
need two people in the family working....but at least there are jobs for
those two people under Reagan. And much of the reason for the two people
working is due to us being spoiled. What was fine for our parants, isn't
good enough for us. Instead of buying a 'starter' home, a young person has
to buy a $100,000 home to begin with. Instead of buying a 4-8 year old car,
a young person has to buy a new car.

I know my family is the same...we have two new cars (okay, a year old
now) and a pickup truck, 4 color tv's, computers, etc.....when I was growing
up, my family had two OLD cars and one b/w tv (and my parents were 'good'
union people...like you).

Cliff,

What gets me about the people blasting Quayle (and have you noticed it's
mostly the press that's blasting him, not the Democrats) is their dual
standard.
In one breath they say that there isn't anything wrong with joining the
National Guard (they don't want to make the millions of National Guardsmen
mad).....then in the next breath they blame Quayle for pulling strings to
get into it. They wouldn't complain if he'd pulled strings to get into the
Army, Air Force, etc. They can't have it both ways...either the National
Guard is a reputable part of the Armed Forces and Quayle was in his rights
to pull strings...or the National Guard isn't reputable.
And the ones that are complaining about Quayles college grades don't tell
us about Bush/Dukakis/Bentsen's college grades.

I don't personally like Quayle for Bush's running mate....but not for the
stupid reasons being thrown around. I just don't think he has enough
experience to be president.....and we have to assume anyone that is elected
vice-president could/can be president at anytime.

Everything in existance would be narrow and one sided.
