Interesting you should use the quote, "Wake up and smell the coffee" on
the late night board. That's some sort of anachronism, or bad pun, or...
What I dispute is who needs to do the waking up. That's what I hate
about dogmatic belief systems, they are self-validating. There is no room
for growth or improvement, for change when flaws are found with certain
points of view. This goes just as well for dogmatic atheism and libertarian
-ism as it does for Christianity and right-wing conservativism (or
socialistic liberalism).
     Ya know what I mean?

Oh, and by the way, Mormonism sucks.

Boy, you guys take the cake. First Rod brings up my religion, calling me
ignorant. Do I take it seriously? No. Rod thinks that any belief system
other than his own is ignorant. So what do I do? Make some casual
conversation. After all, this is the late night sig. Then what happens?
This Zak fellow decides it's time for "The World according to Zak" hour,
ending with an unwarranted, undeserved cheap shot.

That's fine, Zak. Have at it.

When James was in Costa Rica (or in California getting in an
accident) he bought me a big Jesus that blinks at me when I walk by. I have
it hung upside down in my computer room. He keeps me company. The reason
He is upside down is because I have a heart. After hanging right side up
for two thousand years, I thought I'd give the old boy a change of pace. I
just have to remember to keep alternating his position from time to time.
Wow, I bet those nails make his hands and feet smart. The picture is the
same as the one used in Born in East L.A. and it is also the same size. I
just wish it glowed in the dark. Maybe the next time James has his
'heavily insured' van stolen and leaves the country he can get me one. The
only hitch in the operation was the accident. Oh well. -Rod

was 5'4", and at 63, shrinking a little, and as I looked at my waistline, I
could see some of my tall becoming wide. Things like that. It was fun. I
find myself calling in when the issues under discussion appeal to either my

Re: "When a person dies then they either go to
heaven, that is if they are good here on earth, or they go to LLEH if they
were bad."

Not according to the Bible Rod. There is only one reason why a person goes
to either heaven or hell, and it has nothing directly to do with being good
or bad.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting
life.
3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but
that the world through him might be saved.
3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not
is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only
begotten Son of God.

Don't feel bad about it Rod. A lot of people think they know what the Bible
says, but never took the time to really check it out.

Rod, I agree with what you say in message 58283. Almost. It is only
logical that if God has a will for his creation, that he would make it
possible for his creation to know his will. I think his provision was made
through the Bible. I believe it; you don't; that's our difference. Because
I believe it, I also believe that I know spiritual truth. The Bible is
"foolishness" to you. I can understand how you think that. I thought that
way about the Bible for over 30 years.

We saw Pet Sematary last night and alas, I feel another Stephen King
movie/taken from the a novel will bite the dust! The screen play itself (by
King himself!) was great and pure. There was very little deviation from the
novel and what was changed was for shortening purposes. In other words - the
story was intact. It was the miss-casting of the leads that ruined the
picture. They didn't have one ounce of charisma - nor did Fred Gywnn who
played Jud Crandall. I like Gwynn, but he didn't fit htis part of the crusty
Crandall. Even the little girl Ellie Creed was miss-cast. She actually
looked ill! Only the little boy Gage was cast properly. For horror fans, I
suppose it was a good movie - I don't know because I've read the book so
much, I watched the movie with critical eyes more then with enjoyment. To
me, the only true moment that I felt any 'fear' was at the end when Gage
comes back. But perhaps it is a scarey movie. Of course, the highlight of it
all was the 30 seconds King himself appeared on the screen and I got a
glimpse of my Idol!
My final comclusions: I think the reason that King movies are usually flops
is not so much that they don't stick to the story line - but the horror, the
true horror through out all of his books cannot be transfered to the screen.
In the books, what the individuals in the stories feel and think play a
gigantic part in true horror of which King is King! I still recommend this
movie as entertainment, but not of the first caliber. Anyone else see this
movie and want to comment? -=*) ANN (*=-

So if it doesnt suprise you ...why do you seem so angry with the
governments?
As far as I can see, I'll always expect the politcs I've seen to
happen in the future. Convenient lies tailored to suit someone's need
or wants. People will not change in this respect.
SOmeone always comes along with "I've got a better way" and end up
doing much the same stuff if they get off the ground with support.
Only they see their way as infallable or "better" and "I wont do what
so-n-so does" when you elect me.
They may not do what "so-n-so" did, but they do lie and will cheat
and steal ...wether its time, money or materials.
So my question I guess is why even get mad? Throw them out and you'll
get some other clown.
With instincts like we people have, it is impossible to have somone
in such a seat of power that will do things strictly for others
and not for themselves. Its never happened and never will.
I dont expect perfection..so why should you?

What book are you thinking of that can teach good moral values? I would not
dispute that such books exist, but the standard on which they are based are
probably the standard laid down by the Bible thousands of years ago.

I can think of many books off-hand that teach good moral values. It
isn't hard to find good philosophical books that are more to the point than
the Bible. Moral theories abound in books by Rousseau, Hobbes, Jeremy
Bentham, David Hume, John Stuart Mill, Immanuel Kant, Ayn Rand, Jim Rachels,
and John Locke. If you want a more religious angle try some books
on confucianism, taoism, or zen buddhism (I know, I should be capitalizing).
Or, for a non-eastern view of humanity, read Paul Kurtz.

None of the above mentioned works are based on the Bible, as you state.
The statement that most or all moral theories are based on the Bible is just
plain false. Morality is an idea that can exist independently of religion
and that is probably better off that way. There is no room for dogmatism in
ethics (well, perhaps in Immanuel Kant's case). Make that *blind*
dogmatism. The Bible itself is not the earliest written work with a moral
message. The ten commandments are indirectly based on the Code of
Hammurabi, which is Sumerian and predates it by thousands of years.

Furthermore, the Bible has the disadvantage that its moral laws are not
based on reason, but on the infallibility of God. "It's true because God
wills it, God wills it because it's true..." Not all of the moral messages
in the Bible are good, look at the OT. Deuteronomy 16:7-13 (I think) tells
the reader to kill anyone who tries to promote a god other than Jehovah.
Isn't that nice?
So don't give us this "Bible-as-the-source-of-morality" crap.

Date: 04/25/89 Time: 01:49:05

The Tucson BBS scene is nowhere as big as it is here, and there aren't
any boards as good (softwarewise and conversationwise) as Apollo, but there
are some interesting things going on.

For example, Sean Dippold, the sysop of Windy City, killed himself last
week. He was a very uptight persona on the BBS, and we aregued quite a bit.
His big kick was arguing that "Fascism requires capitalism - by definition."
When asked what he based his definition on, he'd respond that "I do not need
to give a reference for something that is true by definition. By
definition, something that is a definition is true by definition." Yes, we
argued quite vehemently. And now he's gone. *sniff*

Another interesting (but alive) BBS persona in Tucson is that crazy
girl, Laura Lansberry. Surely you all remember Laura. She used to be on
Apollo. She's a transexual lesbian, an avid [knee-jerk?] atheist, and
[pseudo-?] intellectual, all rolled in to one, big, barrel of fun-n-laughs.
Her autobiography is available for reading on Smorgasboard (293-8555), and
what a read it is. It documents her intellectual and sexual growth
from the earliest days of childhood to the present, including some wacky
stories about games (s)he used to play in the woods with the other boys, and
those rough-n-tumble days she spent participating in the world's oldest
profession (and I'm not talking about farming!)
That is not to knock Laura completely. She's a good person and all. I
just find her unusual in her often-egocentric, explorative view of humanity.

Other than that, the Tucson BBS scene is pretty dull. Smorgasboard has
4 lines, so there are some interesting chats and such. And, if the
multi-user chats get dull, there are always ways to impersonate other users.
Just like on Apollo. Ha ha ha.

Oh, by the way, Jim Lippard was in a terrible skiing accident. He was
impaled on someone else's ski pole. He isn't as prolific as he used to be,
and I think now he's starting to consider seeking a religion of some sort.
Perhaps Mormonism.

That wacky Tucson scene. Bye all.

I have to agree that truth, from man's position, is a matter of
perspective. God's truth, however, is absolute, and is found only in His
Word, the Bible. Any written or spoken word that claims to be or even
contain truth that deviates from that Word is lies, or at best, mere opinion
and subject to debate and debunking. These include, but are not limited to,
the teachings of Buddha, Allah, the pope, L. Ron Hubbard or Joseph Smith.
And oh yes, Charles Taze Russell too.

Re: "Whether one is a Mormon, a Jew, a Catholic, Buddhist, Hindu, or

It could be that I don't understand what you are saying, but truth is truth
no matter who or what you are. Truth is truth and false is false and never
the twain shall meet.

I like your way of answering messages. I think I'll do the same:

Re: "...truth is truth no matter who or what you are. Truth is truth and
false is false and never the twain shall meet."

I agree. Certainly there is absolute truth. There is also what you believe
is true, there is what I think is true, what Paul Savage thinks is true,
what Buddhist Bill thinks is true, and what every other person in the world
thinks is true. The point is that each one of these people have a different
perspective on what truth really is. You and Paul Savage both claim the
Bible as a vehicle to truth, BUT you still both have different viewpoints as
to what truth is. Unless you and Paul Savage are exact clones of each other
(and I'll hazard a guess to say you aren't), you have different perspectives
on truth. This is not to say that you and Paul Savage don't share some
similar viewpoints. Obviously, you do. However, any place where you and
Paul differ shows that you both have different perspectives on "truth."

Wrong again Todd. Perspective is really an opinion, formed by education,
environment and other influences. Truth is proven fact, supported by
evidence, either historical, experiential or otherwise. By all tests, and by
historical and experiential evidence, the Bible is truth. It's statements
can be proven archeologically, historically and by othe means. The
principles it sets forth are absolute, and will function dependably every
time they are properly applied to a given situation. THese are not
opinions. These are facts. Because these are facts, the Bible is then truth
in it's purest form, since it requires no man's opinion, nor does it depend
on man's concepts or interpretations.
Take the best example I can think of at the moment as a Bible principle,
that of sowing and reaping. The Bible states, without equivocation, that
whatsoever you sow, that shall you also reap. This is an absolute, and,
whether you choose to believe it or not, it works every time it is applied,
consciously or uncconsciously. If you sow apple seeds, you will never get
oranges. If you sow hate and discontent, you will be repaid in kind. The
same with love. Whatever you put out, you will eventually get back. As the
world would say, whatever goes around, comes around. Same principle. WOrks
every time. God thought of it first, since He is the one who set it in
motion. Ergo, the Bible is truth. Pure truth. Unadulterated, and
unadulterable truth.

THe category should be question, not answer. The point is, who said
Lippard was innocent? He has spent a good part of his life ridiculing God
and the things of God. Just maybe the impaling was the only way that God
could force him to lay there and listen for long enough to comprehend His
(God's) love. Maybe?

Lets put the definition of truth another way ---- John Doe is a Christian
and believes the Bible is the truth! -- Abduhla Saheeb is a Muslim and
believes the Koran is the truth! Questions: --
(1) Is John right and Abduhla wrong?
(2) Is Abduhla right and John wrong?
(3) Are they both wrong?
(4) Are they both right?
I think the truth is --- they are both right! Truth, not beauty is in the
eye of the beholder! -=*) ANN (*=-

There was an 'opinion article' in the paper today re: gun control. Here is
some of it and I think he stated it well. The reporter is Walter Williams.
(Not related to Rod - he's black!) ------
"The propaganda employed by the gun-control lobby is slick. It calls for
responsible things like longer waiting periods for background checks and for
the outlawing of automatic weapons. They didn't publically demand arms
confiscations; they know they'd encounter too much resistance. Their agenda
calls for disarming us a little bit at a time. This, you'll recall, is how
many of our freedoms have been taken. Our job is not to let the camel get
even his nose in the tent! My attitude about gun laws is the following: I
will feel better explaining to a judge why I have an illegal weapon than I'd
feel in a casket!"
I think this was very well put! -=*) ANN (*=-

I called Dennis DeConcini's office and told them that I thought his new
gun control bill was a terrible idea. I asked them if they were getting much
response on it and they said "nothing unusual." If Arizonans sit by and
expect someone else to fight this thing it will pass and then there will be
a law hanging over our heads which could send practically anyone who owns a
semi-automatic firearm to jail. The forms that this law requires have not
been in use for anything but dealer transactions for the last twenty years.

No, I didn't give you a trick question. You say that you believe
God exists exactly as stated in scripture. Well that's fine, Bob, but if
you have no solid proof then I'm afraid that in reality you are agnostic.
Look it up in the dictionary. You most probably have faith that what you
believe is real but that doesn't cut it. Proof is necessary for one to be
what they say, without proof you really do not know.

Dear Rod;

I am not a deity, and God is far more powerful than I. I would like
to be flying around the cosmos as you put it, but God told me I have to do
this 'EARTH' trip over again till I get it right. It is his way of telling
me that EARTH is the HELL we all fear.
I am going to lead a straight life from now on, so after my next
earthly death, I will go on to better places.
I thought I would stop by and warn you of the dangerous path you
are taking. Tell me Rod, do you wish to do this earthly trip again? If
not, seek the way of the Lord, as he speaks the gospel.
