Certified mail is used when the sender wants assurance of
delivery by means of a receipt. Such things as non-negotiable papers, duns,
etc. are sent certified.
Registered mail is far more expensive, and is used to send items of
intrinsic value, such as negotiable securities, large amounts of cash, etc.,
where the important factor is security of the mail as opposed to speed of
delivery. Transit of such mail is somewhat delayed, since the piece must be
hand delivered and signed for by each postal employee who handles it in any
way, until it is delivered to the addressee, who also must sign for it,
after properly identifying himself.
Have a good day, and thanks for asking a non-combative question!

Okay, that explains it. I knew that registerd was a lot more expensive,
but I didn't know what you got for the extra $$.

Someone commented some time back that AT&T is, generaly, the only l/d
provider serving many remote areas. You could dial into these areas using
Sprint or MCI, but these calls are transfered to AT&T lines, and this
service is one way.
I did a little checking. It is true that other long distance companies
buy service from AT&T to reach some areas. It is also true that many of
these remote systems do not provide equal access -- when you dial '1' you
reach AT&T exclusively. It is NOT true that other l/d companies can't be
used from these areas. It isn't as convienient as dialing '1' but you can
still do it the same way that it was done before equal access, by dialing an
access number then your billing number then the number you are calling. Yes
it's a pain, but with an autodialing phone it's not so bad. The access
number is not always a toll number. For example, US Sprint's access number
is an 800 number, which can be reached from any phone in the US. Some parts
of the call go over AT&T lines (again, paid for by the other l/d company)
but they still go through.

Moreover, if the USPS monopoly was removed, private companies could still
contract with the USPS for rural delivery, if they so desired. I'm not sure
they would.

Actually, points are kind of like infinity. With the microscope, the point
of a pencil is flat. The point of a needle is flat. There never really is
a true point, is there?

I detect that you are trying to determine who has the biggest points.
Well, the size of the point that you want people to notice means nothing if
you cannot get that point across for them to see.
Now, as for me, I do not use the thunder BUSTer routine that you use. I
feel that to effectively get ones point(s) across one must use slow, rigid
determination. Reveal them in a deliberate fashion while maintaining a
leisure atmosphere. Make sure that the first point you reveal is noticed and
understood. Revealing the second point should be handled with as much
determination and attention as your first point. Make sure the party you
want to get your points noticed to is attentive and aware of the wonders of
the points that were uncovered. Provide your listener with every opportunity
and convenience to grasp and hold on to the points you have just unveiled.
Remember, also, to monitor the pressure you use on your listener to get your
point(s) across. You do not want to find yourself endangering the stamina
of your listener or destroying his capacity to reveal his point on cue.
There lies the answer to an effective 'point - counter-point' form of
communication: Method and Timing.

You're right. There is just too much discussion, and not any action.
I'll just launch to rocket myself, and we can have a GT, and I'll show you

But seriously... The rocket engine should be here this week, and the date
WILL be finalized this week. Satisfactory?

Interesting, but just an old theory with a new twist! I hardly think that
the people that lived 3000 years ago had no minds. Egypt at that time was a
flourishing nation and I doubt they could have accomplished what they did
without thinking. =*--ANN--*=

I don't think it was people thousands of years ago who were "unconscious" -
your posts bear those traits quite clearly.

Jaynes (not Jannes) never said that people 3000 years ago had no minds or
didn't think--quite the opposite. What he does argue is that they were not
conscious. The first part of his book is crucial to his argument (and I
think his arguments in this part are more solid than the speculations which
follow); in this section he defines "consciousness" and "thinking" and shows
that consciousness is unnecessary to most of the things we call "thinking".
I think he's quite right on these points, and subsequent research has
supported him. (A very easy-to-read illustration may be found in Marvin
Minsky's recent book _The Society of Mind_.)

Let us indulge the human mind's penchant for categorical
choices and forcast the future of humanity. Either there
will be a catastrophic nuclear war that destroys our
technologies, or our technologies will control themselves
and machines will begin reproducing in outer space. If the
former occurs, people will vanish from the biosphere, global
ecology will shift, and the biosphere will evolve in curious
directions. It will not be a victory for humanity.
However, if we survive our nuclear threat and become a
multiplanet civilization, reproducing in outer space, this
too will not necessarily be a victory for humanity. It will
be a victory for the biosphere, for the nexus of life,
inclusive of machines.
The great ape *Homo* in his present state is a singularly
technological creature. In truth, a human being may be
thought of as an obligate technobe, a weak body entirely
dependent on rapid harvesting of agricultural grasses, on
milking, slaughtering, and packaging domesticated
artiodactyls; on extraction of organic compounds, remnants
of vast communities of photosynthesizers as fossil fuel oil
from deep wells; on electromagnetic communication
satellites, on automobiles, and airplanes; in short, on
machines.
If there is a central insight to evolution it is that
patterns of living organization are transitory. A similar
insight exists in the great Eastern religions. The doctrine
of reincarnation teaches that there is a never-ending cycle
of life and rebirth. Buddhism teaches that Nirvana is the
blissful release from such a cycle. Human beings present no
exception to the law of change. The acceleration of
technology since the horse-and-buggy days predating World
War I to the development of a global technology after World
War II attests less to the glory of God than to the amoral
demiurge that is the evolving biosphere. *Australopithecus
robustus*, *Homo erectus*, *Homo sapiens*, food gathering
bands, hunting troops, and village life are all fleeting
apparitions on the great stage of evolution. So are Tokyo
and New York. Agricultural apes and cities represent stages
in the development of the biosphere, which is becoming
depleted in life and suffused with technology.

I believe the minds of today are not yet fully conscious. One look
at our world should tell you that. But of course you would have to be
reasonably conscious to know.
Oh well!
