A hypothetical FBI monitor might not approach the sysop and ask for any
special priviledges. There would be a good possibility that the sysop was
the person they were most likely to go after and in that case they would do
nothing to tip their hand. Access to all Sigs (if deemed neccessary) could
be aquired through multiple identities.

When J. Edgar Hoover was director of the FBI, the agency got carried away
investigating people who hadn't done anything but criticize Hoover.
However, I don't know of any such abuses since life tenure for the FBI
director was ended in the '70s. And I can't imagine what the FBI could find

I know about morning launchs, and have been to many more than you have. And

June 5, 12, 19, 26
These dates are all Sundays, because I believe it is necessary for Cliff to

Naturally, I agree that it is not satisfactory for the Algerian authorities
to have allowed the hijackers to get away. On the other hand, the hijacking
cannot be called a success; the terrorists gained nothing except their
own freedom, which they already had before the hijacking. And they didn't
draw that much attention to their cause; unlike the Beirut hijacking of
1985, this one was not a media circus (mostly because there were no
Americans aboard). The outcome of this hijacking can hardly be taken as
encouragement for future ones.

All war movies should be like Platoon - which is true to life to a certain
degree. No Chuck Norrises - no Arnies - no Brosons - but the basic, human
people getting killed and maimed. There was no love interests, no T & As and
no real hero types. I don't think the movie market should be glutted with
war movies however. A few is fine - but if too many, then people begin to
think that's the only way of life. On the other hand, personally I love to
see old Norris blast away and win a war single handedly. But if there are
too many of these kinds and not enough Platoon types - then people begin to
think "Hey man, I'm gonna get me a gun like that and wipe out all the gooks
and be a hero"! I guess what I'm trying to say is - we need moderation in
this field. We also need more movies that make us feel good and laugh - show
people as being good and lots of love and togetherness. There is too much
killing all the time - even on TV. If they do have a non-violent story, it's
usually negitive - people cheating on each other - men at each other's
throat striving to reach the top in a big corporation - etc. etc. Remember
the movie 'It's a Wonderful life'? How good it made you feel and thankful? I
watch it now and it seems like fantasy. That's sad. =*--ANN--*=

But let us come to Commodus, who might easily have kept
the empire, having succeeded to it by heredity, being the
son of Marcus, and it would have sufficed for him to follow
in the steps of his father to have satisfied both the people
and the soldiers. But being of a cruel and bestial
disposition, in order to be able to exercise his rapacity on
the people, he sought to favour the soldiers and render them
licentious; on the other hand, by not maintaining his
dignity, by often descending into the theatre to fight with
gladiators and committing other contemptable actions, little
worthy of the imperial dignity, he became despicable in the
eyes of the soldiers, and being hated on the one hand and
being despised on the other, he was conspired against and
killed.
There remains to be described the character of Maximinus.
He was an extremely warlike man, and as the armies were
annoyed with the effeminacy of Alexander, which we have
already spoken of, he was elected emperor after the death of
the latter. He did not enjoy it for long, as two things
made him hated and despised: the one his base origin, as he
had been a shepherd in Thrace, which was generally known and
caused great disdain on all sides; the other, because he had
at the commencement of his rule deferred going to Rome to
take possession of the Imperial seat, and had obtained a
reputation for great cruelty, having through his prefects in
Rome and other parts of the empire committed many acts of
cruelty. The whole world being thus moved by indignation
for the baseness of his blood, and also by the hatred caused
by fear of his ferocity, he was conspired against first by
Africa and afterwards by the senate and all the people of
Rome and Italy. His own army also joined them, for
besieging Aquileia and finding it difficult to take, they
became enraged at his cruelty, and seeing that he had so
many enemies, they feared him less and put him to death.

I will not speak of Heliogabalous, of Macrinus, or
Julianus, who being entirely contemptible were immediately
suppressed, but I will come to the conclusion of this
discourse by saying that the princes of our time have less
difficulty than these in being obliged to satisfy in an
extraordinary degree their soldiers in their states; for
although they must have a certain consideration for them,
yet any difficulty is soon settled, for none of these princes
have armies that are inextricably bound up with the
administration of the government and the rule of their
provinces as were the armies of the Roman empire. If it was
then necessary to satisfy the soldiers rather than the
people, it was because the soldiers could do more than the
people; now, it is more necessary for all princes, except
the Turk and the Sultan, to satisfy the people than the
soldiers, for the people can do more than the soldiers. I
except the Turk, because he always keeps about him twelve
thousand infantry and fifteen thousand cavalry, on which
depend the security and the strength of his kingdom; and it
is necessary for him to postpone every other consideration
to keep them friendly. It is the same with the kingdom of
the Sultan, which being entirely in the hands of the
soldiers, he is bound to keep their friendship regardless of
the people. And it is to be noted that this state of the
Sultan is different from that of all other princes, being
similar to the Christian pontificate, which cannot be called
either a hereditary kingdom or a new one, for the sons of
the dead prince are not his heirs, but he who is elected to
that position by those who have authority. And as this
order is ancient it cannot be called a new kingdom, there
being none of these difficulties which exist in new ones; as
although the prince is new, the rules of that state are old
and arranged to receive him as if he were their hereditary
lord.

Oppression is a funny thing, some feel they are being set upon
by society while others are perfectly content with the way it is. I
guess I'm in the former group although it wasn't always that way. Let
me elaborate a little. Back in the early sixties I accepted life the
way it was, I had no inner or outer complaints, if I had a problem it
was easy to turn on the tv, open a beer and watch a game. But
something happened to my mind. I did a lot of reversals in my
thinking, one of which was becoming interested in the real events
around me instead of just drinking and partying.
There are people who are in worse shape than I, who do not feel
oppressed, they are perfectly content with their personal struggles of
life and never write a letter or voice an opinion. When they do
engage in conversation about issues they quote the opinion of their
favorite news personality on that particular topic. Important events
are handled for them by their elected officials and this leaves them
room to get on with their personal life. Perhaps I should become that
way once again.

But something happened to me which I am not sure is good or bad
but it did happen and here I am. In the sixties I experimented with
marijuana, LSD, and Peyote, I gave up alcohol totally. In my drug
induced visions I saw the possibilities of what life could be like
instead of what it is like. I reasoned that whenever and wherever
life existed that it should be quality, it should be fun for all
participants. Truly, under the influence of LSD, the answers seem
simple. All life everywhere is related and also equal and it would be
so easy for people to love one another, being the brother and sister
that they are. But NO, I have to come back to this pig sty world
where it is 'get rich off the labors of another', let others break
their backs while the gluttons reap and keep the harvest for
themselves. I saw that every life form on this planet was entitled to
an equal share by right of birth yet it is rented or leased to you by
the month and if you don't pay, out on the street you go.
This is the type of world I find myself in and because of this I
feel oppressed. Simply stated, I saw what the world could be like and
obtainable with far less effort than we now use.
I am not condoning the use of marijuana, LSD or any of the other
drugs. In my experience I have noted that drugs affect different
people in varied ways. The Biblical story of Adam & Eve eating the
'forbidden fruit', thus knowing good and evil, parallels my story.

Oh Carol! Boy do I know what you mean as far as old motor mouth Ed. I tell
you, that guy was something else. You'd beg and plead... "Ed, I have to go
now... there's someone at the door... I have an important meeting... I
have to feed the dog... MY PANTS ARE ON FIRE..." and old Ed would just keep
right on talking... talking... talking... talking........
It was unbelieveable.
Perhaps it isn't too nice to talk about Ed behind his back, even if it is
all in good fun. Maybe we should mention a few of Ed's good qualities to
even the score?
Hmmm... Now wait. I had one in my mind just a minute ago. Yeah, I
remember now. Ed took me out to lunch once. That was real nice.

He payed for a bunch of people's $tatus (without telling us until later) to
try to impress Cliff. I'm sure Cliff was really impressed...
