Third-class mail is priced lower than first-class
because third-class mailers get less service than first-class mailers. When
you mail a first-class letter, the post office sorts it for you, while
third-class (and presorted first-class) letters come to the post office
already sorted. Third-class mailings have to be of a certain minimum size
(hence the name "bulk mail"), as it is more economical to provide delivery
in volume. Third-class letters are not forwarded if the addressee has
moved, and delivery of third-class mail is less reliable than first-class.
To propose that third-class mailers should pay first-class rates for
third-class sevice is idiotic.

Cliff,
Any mail that I get that doesn't have at least $.18 postage, goes
straight to the trash. I've never had anyone send me anything important
with less than $.18 postage....I don't know what that rate has gone up to
now.

Cliff, why don't you just get a bigger mail box. Besides don't you get alot
of catalogs from your suppliers. You won't want to have to pay higher prices
for your merchandise just to cover the increase cost of your supplier's

Absolutely right James. Of course, the truth won't cut much ice with the
chronic bitchers around here. They have to have somebody or something to
complain about, even if the gripes aren't founded.
Cliff, as Joe said, if you're having problems with crushed diskettes, get a
bigger box. According to regulations, you are required to have a box large
enough to contains anything you receive regularly.
If you still have problems, talk them over with the station manager that
you get your mail from, in your case I believe that is the Bell Annex. Ask
him to advise your carrier to use extra caution with such mail, which, by
the way, should be clearly marked "fragile".
If you are still all that aggravated with the "junk" mail that is helping
to keep your first class rates low, then do as Lloyd does, and check the
upper right hand corner of the envelope. If it doesn't have at least .18
postage on it (the rate for preorted )that's sorted!) first class, then file
it. Even for someone who can't add without a computer, that shouldn't be too
difficult.
(What IS your new last name, anyhow?)

There is a news report that some postal workers in a NY P.O. faked
postmarks so they could win in a newspaper's Superbowl contest. They waited
for the game to end, put the winner's name in an envelope and postmarked it
with an earlier date.
But anyway, does the extra service (forwarding and returns) cost *that*
much more than bulk mail? It is *very* rare that I use either forwarding or
returning of first class mail -- I'd say that it was less than 1 in 1000,
for me. In my case, the extra cost this adds is spread out over the other
999+ pieces of mail. If we set the amount for forwarding/return at 5c per
stamp (and 20c is still more than 3rd class costs) thats about $50 per
forwarded/returned letter. Am I just especially good about getting
addresses right, and underuse this extra service?

Yeah, you can get your name off of mailing lists....some of them, for a
little while, but you'll get back on their list sooner or later.
If the Post Office is so concerned for our well-being and us getting junk
mail, why don't they offer us a 'trash can' option? In other words, you
fill out a form, give it to your deliveryman and he 'trashs' all of the bulk
mailing stuff. They'd still send catalogues, books, magazines and 1st class
but not deliver the 'junk'.
Yes, this would take a little more time at the station but would save the
mailperson a lot of time on delivery. They'd probably only have 1/3 to 1/2
the mail to deliver each day and could get done sooner.
If the junk mailers have the right to send me their junk, I should have
the right not to accept it. Just today, my mailbox was full....3 'real'
letters and the rest 'junk'.

Although every effort is made to prevent damage and delay to the mail, due

Hell, I agree that our current form of capitalism is doing us no
good. I also understand that Russia's form of Communism is not exactly what
Marx had in mind.
I may soon consider myself a Marxist.
Karl Marx, his wife and children lived in poverty, three of their
children died from lack of nutrition. They had trouble burying one of their
children from lack of funds, Marx paid some serious dues and I give his
observations much credit.
I see the poor class, middle class, upper middle class as so much
fodder for the rich pigs, slave labor if you will. I have stated many of
Marx's ideas in the past without so much as knowing about him or his
specific words.
It is not hard to come to conclusions naturally after having been
out in this world on you own for a period. Of course if you have something
to fall back on during your own life, this may soften your views and keep
many of the thoughts of a capitalitic structure at bay.

Nevertheless, it disappoints me to no end that the launch date was so

before ANYONE starts suggesting launch dates. We're not NASA and even they
postponed the last launch 3 years now.
Cliff; I really don't tthink you're being civil with Nick about this either.
Think about it.
The weekend before the 15th is good, after and up until the 3rd of June...
that's vacation time for us. Instead of rushing and cramming, guessing
and changing so much, why not set the date AFTER the rocket is completed
and by popular vote. If anyone is unhappy about the date, they should
state so and supply an alternative. A second vote after that should seal
it.

It may perhaps seem to some, that considering the life and
death of many Roman emperors that they are instances
contrary to my opinions, finding that some who always lived
nobly and showed great strength of character, nevertheless
lost the empire, or were killed by their subjects who
conspired against them. Wishing to answer these objections,
I will discuss the qualities of some emperors, showing the
cause of their ruin not to be at variance with what I have
stated, and I will also meanwhile consider the things to be
noted by whoever reads the deeds of these times. I will
content myself with taking all those emperors who succeeded
to the empire from Marcus the philosopher to Maximinus;
these were Marcus, Commodus his son, Pertinax, Julianus,
Severus, Antoninus, Caracalla his son, Macrinus,
Heliogabalus, Alexander, and Maximinus. And the first thing
to note is, that whereas other princes have only to contend
against the ambition of the great and the insolence of the
people, the Roman emperors had a third difficulty, that of
having to support the cruelty and avarice of the soldiers,
which was such that it was the cause of the ruin of many, it
being hardly possible to satisfy both the soldiers and the
people. For the people love tranquility, and therefore like
pacific princes, but the soldiers prefer a prince of
military spirit, who is insolent, cruel, and rapacious.
They wish him to exercise these qualities on the people so
that they may get double pay and give vent to their avarice
and cruelty. Thus it came about that those emperors who, by
nature or art, had not such a reputation as could keep both
parties in check, were invariably ruined, and the greater
number of them who were raised to the empire being new men,
knowing the difficulties of these two opposite dispositions,
confined themselves to satisfying the soldiers, and thought
little of injuring the people. This choice was necessary,
princes not being able to avoid being hated by some one.
They must first try not to be hated by the mass of people;
if they cannot accomplish this they must use every means to
escape the hatred of the most powerful parties. And
therefore these emperors, who being new men had need of
extraordinary favours, adhered to the soldiers rather than
to the people; whether this, however, was of use to them or
not, depended on whether the prince knew how to maintain his
reputation with them. From these causes it resulted that
Marcus, Pertinax, and Alexander, being all of modest life,
lovers of justice, enemies of cruelty, humane and benign,
all came to a sad end except Marcus. Marcus alone lived and
died in honour, because he succeeded to the empire by
hereditary right and did not owe it either to the soldiers
or to the people; besides which, possessing many virtues
which made him revered, he kept both parties in their place
as long as he lived and was never either hated or despised.
But Pertinax was created emperor against the will of the
soldiers, who being accustomed to live licentiously under
Commodus, could not put up with the honest life to which
Pertinax wished to limit them, so that having made himself
hated, and to this contempt being added because he was old,
he was ruined at the very beginning of his administration.

Whence it may be seen that hatred is gained as much by
good works as by evil, and therefore, as I said before, a
prince who wishes to maintain the state is often forced to
do evil, for when that party, whether populace, soldiery, or
nobles, whichever it be that you consider necessary to you
for keeping your position, is corrupt, you must follow its
humour and satisfy it, and in that case good works will be
inimical to you. But let us come to Alexander, who was of
such goodness, that among other things for which he is
praised, it is said that in the fourteen years that he
reigned no one was put to death by him without a fair trial.
Nevertheless, being considered effeminate, and a man who
allowed himself to be ruled by his mother, and having thus
fallen into contempt, the army conspired against him and
killed him.
Considering, on the other hand, the qualities of Commodus,
Severus, Antoninus, Caracalla, and Maximinus, you will find
them exteremely cruel and rapacious; to satisfy the soldiers
there was no injury which they would not inflict on the
people, and all except Severus ended badly. Severus,
however, had such abilities that by maintaining the soldiers
friendly to him, he was able to reign happily, although he
oppressed the people, for his virtues made him so admirable
in the sight of both of the soldiers and the people that the
latter were, in some degree, astonished and stupified, while
the former were respectful and contented.

photographs, or maybe... nah, only in dreams could it be that good....

That's nonsense. Why would someone who is completely sane neccesarily be
able to "lick the mental health problem"?

1: I don't think anyone is completely sane, perhaps for
periods but
2:living in an insane world would throw that person back & forth
between
3:sanity and insanity. That is where I am.
4: I go out during the day and it makes me insane because I
can cope
5:better. When I am driving around 15th & Madison and I see the
children I
6:want to cry because it exists, when I get into a repossessed auto
to make a
7:key and I see a childs shoe or a kids book or a pamper, I want to
weep, so I
8:just go insane. Our world is insane because we have not yet
evolved far
9:enough in our intelligence. 10: Mothers have to leave their
children in smelly child care centers in 11:order to do some menial,
unnecessary job, simply to get government paper 12:money to pay the
rent and utilities, no wonder drugs are so popular. 13: Fathers
leave their children also, and for the peak period of their 14:life
and the peak period of their childrens lives. If this isn't insanity,
15:I don't know what is. 16: It is good to be insane, it helps a
lot. When driving we can turn 17:our heads when we see a sad
situation, it is easier and becomes easier all 18:the time. 19:
Marx was right.

1: Sure was strange this evening....while I was scanning the cable
2:television channels, I counted five (5) major war movies. Hmmm, perhaps the
government is getting our kids in the mood.
4: Do any 18-21 year olds want to fight some gooks this year. You can
5:have your own M-16 and real hand grenades. I'm too busy, I'd rather have
6:some kid die for me to protect me against those Commies.
